Energy Efficiency

This document discusses energy efficiency, including definitions, examples, benefits, and policies. It defines energy efficiency as requiring less energy to perform the same function, and provides examples like LED bulbs using less energy than incandescent bulbs to produce the same light. The benefits highlighted are reduced costs, improved quality of life, and environmental protection. Energy efficiency strategies discussed for different sectors include building codes, industrial improvements, fuel-efficient vehicles, and data collection. The need for energy efficiency in Nepal is outlined due to its energy deficit and reliance on biomass. Power point slides on Energy Efficiency

Energy
• Energy is capacity of doing work which may be in
potential, kinetic, mechanical, electrical and other
forms.
• Energy is needed for day to day activities like
Transportation ,Heating and Cooling ,
Manufacturing, Lighting ,Entertaining, etc
• Generally source of energy like wind energy
,Nuclear energy, hydropower energy, thermal
energy , nuclear energy etc are used.
• Choices of people about how they use energy
affects the environment and energy consumption
• Choices includes the way you use the energy.
• Turning off the light when not in use, using
high efficiency vehicle, Sudhariyeko Chulo,
etc are the choices you make to use the energy.
• Individual choices effect the energy in the
local, Regional, National and Global scale.
• Minor loss in energy accumulate to form a
major loss.
• So the energy efficiency term was introduced
to save the unusual loss of the energy
Energy Efficiency
• It is the technology that requires less energy
to perform the same function.
• LED bulb requires less energy than
incandescent bulb to produce the same amount
of light
•An efficient and lightweight vehicle consumes
less fuel
•Its save both energy as well as the cost of the
energy
• Use of LED would be much Energy Efficient

Energy Efficiency
• It is the similar term to the energy conservation
but it is not the same.
• Conservation of energy deals with saving the
energy deducting the level of luxury.
• Example of energy conservation is to walk
instead of taking vehicle ,using 10 watt bulb
instead of 15 watt.
• But energy efficiency deals with same level of
service .
Concept of Efficiency

Figure: GDP vs. Energy Efficiency Source: Google

• In early development days it was believed that
the more energy consumption results
development of the country
• Later countries like Italy , Switzerland ,Japan
etc proved that economy can be raised with the
less energy consumption.
• The main principle was to use the concept of
energy efficiency and decrease the unusual loss
of energy
• As given in above graph UAE has the largest
energy consumption but GDP is less than the
countries with less energy consumption
• The ratio of total primary energy supply to GDP
of Russia is higher than Japan.
• Since GDP of Russia is less than Japan energy
efficiency increases from left to right .

Why Efficiency ?
• Energy efficiency reduces the operating cost and
saves money
• Energy efficiency enhances quality of life.
– More productive
– More comfortable
• Energy efficiency saves the environment
– Saving resources
– Avoiding pollution
• Energy efficiency improves the economy
– Saves billions
– Creates jobs
– Spurring innovation

Energy efficiency: where and How?
• Resident
– Using energy efficient home appliances and newer
technologies
– Aiming for net-zero energy consumption in buildings
– Mandatory building energy codes and minimum
energy performance
– Energy-efficient lighting systems
– Phase-out of inefficient lighting products and systems
• Industries
– Making continual operational improvements
– Ensuring effective maintenance of equipment to
reduce energy wastage
– Making engineered improvements, additions,
modifications and upgrades
– Implementing energy-efficient new technologies.
– Complementary policies to support industrial
energy efficiency
– Energy efficiency services for small and medium-
sized enterprises (SMEs)
Energy efficiency: where and How?
• Transportation
– Increasing Fuel Economy of New Vehicles
– Improving Operational Efficiency
– Energy Efficient Technologies
– Development and promotion of energy efficient
technologies
– Improving vehicle operational efficiency through
eco-driving and other measures
– Fuel-efficient non-engine components
– Mandatory vehicle fuel efficiency standards
Policies in National level
• Energy efficiency data collection and indicators
development
• Strategies and action plans
• Development of competitive energy markets, with
appropriate regulation
• Increase private investment in energy efficiency
• Encourage the new technologies and energy
efficient appliances
• Monitoring, enforcement and evaluation of policies
and measures
Energy situation in Nepal
• Our country does not have its own reserve of gas ,coal or oil.
• Our most significant energy resources is water, but less than 1%
of potential 83,000 MW hydropower is currently harnessed.
• Firewood is predominant energy(about 70%) but its use is
inefficient and poses a threat to country’s forest.
• Nepal has a high energy consumption in relation to its gross
domestic product (GDP).
• Efficiency is not effectively applied in context of Nepal
• Average annual per capita electricity consumption is about 161
kWh lowest consumption in South Asia.
• Hence based on the energy consumption energy efficiency
program is launched in Nepal called NEEP (Nepal Energy
Efficiency Program)

Need of Energy Efficiency in Nepal

• Huge potential of energy conservation in

residential cooking, industrial thermal application
and commercial enterprises.
• Poor management of energy utilization in all
sectors.
• Huge energy deficit specially the electricity all
around the year
• Energy efficiency for saving foreign currency
towards better economy and environment.
• Energy efficiency for energy conservation and
energy security
Nepal Energy Efficiency Program
• Components under NEEP are:
– Energy policy and awareness
– Energy conservation in household sector
– Energy conservation in industry sector
• Major activities under NEEP
– Develop Biomass Energy Strategy
– Establish Energy Efficiency Centre
– Support energy policy development
– Support awareness raising
– Study on labelling and standardization of major
household electric appliances
