Differentiate the following information:

1. IT vs ICT

 Information and communications technology (ICT) refer to all the technology

used to handle telecommunications, broadcast media, intelligent building
management systems, audiovisual processing and transmission systems, and
network-based control and monitoring functions.
 Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve,
transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a
business or other enterprise.
 IT system is a computer system – including all hardware, software and
peripheral equipment – operated by a limited group of users.
 IT is a subset of information and communications technology (ICT).

2. Digital Age vs Information Age vs Computer Age

 The Digital Age, also called the information age, is defined as the time
period starting in the 1970s with the introduction of the personal computer
with subsequent technology introduced providing the ability to transfer
information freely and quickly.
 The Information Age is a historical period that began in the late 20 th
century, the Information age regarded as a time in which information has
become a commodity that is quickly and widely disseminated and easily
available especially using computer technology.
 Computer Age is the period in modern history characterized by computer
use and development and its effects on all aspects of life. The current era as
characterized by the development, applications, and sociopolitical
consequences of computer technology.

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:

1. Evolution of Media –

In the early human evolutionary process, the communication of message was associated
with non-verbal communication particularly the movement from “pre-hominid to early
proto-human life”, that discerned through the designed channels commenced the early
human communication, where it takes back to the ancient cave paintings, drawings, and
epic writings.

In those days, it emerged the standardization of gestures, resonances, and other signals
that were used to show the danger, the presence of food and synchronized hunting.
Message of communication from the cave paintings indicates that the incidences
occurred in nature give knowledge to human activities such as hunting. Books being
oldest form of media communication are as old as the existence of written language.

The word media is defined “one of the means or channels of general communication,

information, or entertainment in society”, as newspapers, radio or television so now
there are many improvements for media especially in the social media we can easily get
the news. There are different theories of media evolution. The tribal age or Acoustic era,
in this era their primary medium was oral communication. Ear was the key organ.
Hearing and smelling were a crucial ability in this age. The second one is the  age of
literacy or visual era, in this era words are created with dualism between sight and
sound. Eyes were the key organ, or this is what being used. The words were no longer
immediate and alive. In this era People became dependent learners. The third one is
the print age or visual era, in this age was dated to the invention of movable type
mechanic printing by Johannes Gutenberg. Printing press made visual dependence
widespread and it was the ultimate extension of phonetic literacy. The last one is
the electronic age or the era of instant communication, in this era what we feel was
more important than what we think. This is the evolution of media, from just hearing to
the instant communications. This is how media is being generated . And until now our
media is still evolving/ updating. And we must be media literate.

Media means by which information passes from a communicator to the information

receivers. It has always been part of human existence. In previous times, information
used to pass through word of mouth or letters jotted on a piece of paper, or in ancient
times, scribbled on stone tablets and the Egyptian papyrus platform. Technological
advancements that are gradually experienced throughout the planet also contributed to
the change of conveying the message. As mentioned, the urgency and speed of message
transfers brought rise to the development of new strategies to convey the messages.
Letters were introduced in the seventeenth century to aid in this process. Individuals
who were to expertise in message delivery were hired to send letters to different
locations. Telephone was then introduced to people. This was later advanced by the
introduction of the cellular phones and the internet in the late 1970s. Media evolution
has continued to wonder many on the planet. Many researchers have assured that more
advancement is still in wait. It is important to embrace this evolution as it makes
livelihood more interesting and informative.

As time pass by, not only humans have evolved or changed. Media or the main means of
mass communication has also changed a lot. From oral communication, to phonetic
alphabet, to printing press machines, newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and
internet. Media has really developed gradually. In today’s time, media is really advanced
and improved. You can easily get information through different sources, you can
socialize with other people without going outside, you can buy an item without going to
the store, you will be able to get all the sorts of information you want in just a quick
touch of any gadgets. Because of the evolution of media, we are now capable of making
our own media messages through our own perspectives and imagination. We were able
to build our own understanding of the world based on how media showed and presented
it to us.
2. Evolution of Technology –

Looking back to the 1990’s, the Internet was a new commodity many, but not all,
households and businesses began to gain access. For people living during that time, the
sound of the painfully slow dial up signal connecting to the Internet is a not-so-fond
memory. Thankfully, as more people found value in the Internet, technology took off to
eliminate having to use a phone line to go online and instead delivered faster
connections to the World Wide Web. All technologies are born out of purpose. For
example, search engines were created to sort through the massive amounts of data
online. With each new upgrade technology compounds existing technologies to create
something better than what was previously used before. And on and on it goes. With the
lightning speed of technological evolution, it is no wonder many people have struggled
to keep up. To be fair, the scope of technology’s expanse is so great, wrapping
everything up into a single blog post is practically impossible. Here is just a brief glimpse
into how rapidly the Internet and technology have evolved in recent years. The
emergence of technology, made possible by the development of the rational faculty,
paved the way for the first stage: the tool. A tool provides a mechanical advantage in
accomplishing a physical task, such as an arrow, plow, or hammer that augments
physical labor to more efficiently achieve his objective. Later animal-powered tools such
as the plow and the horse, increased the productivity of food production about tenfold
over the technology of the hunter-gatherers. Tools allow one to do things impossible to
accomplish with one's body alone, such as seeing minute visual detail with a microscope,
manipulating heavy objects with a pulley and cart, or carrying volumes of water in a
bucket. The second technological stage was the creation of the machine. A machine (a
powered machine to be more precise) is a tool that substitutes part of or all of the
element of human physical effort, requiring only the control of its functions. Machines
became widespread with the industrial revolution, though windmills, a type of machine,
are much older. Examples of this include cars, trains, computers, and lights. Machines
allow humans to Tremendously exceed the limitations of their bodies. Putting a machine
on the farm, a tractor, increased food productivity at least tenfold over the technology of
the plow and the horse. The third, and final stage of technological evolution is
the automation. The automation is a machine that removes the element of human
control with an automatic algorithm. Examples of machines that exhibit this
characteristic are digital watches, automatic telephone switches, pacemakers, and
computer programs.
It is crucial to understand that the three stages outline the introduction of the
fundamental types of technology, and so all three continue to be widely used today. A
spear, a plow, a pen, a knife, a glove, a chicken and an optical microscope are all
examples of tools.

3. Impact of Technology to your daily lives –

We know that technology plays an important role in fulfilling our daily needs. Basically, if
we look around us, technology can be seen everywhere from a small pen to an airplane.
From a day until late night technology is associated with our lives. A revolution of
technology has made human life much easier. We can do our tasks much faster and in a
much easier way, saving time.
No one can imagine a life without technology. Imagine if airplane had not been invented,
then traveling from one country to other countries would take a long time. In the
medical field, many people’s life has been saved and cured with technology. Without
technology, our life would have been helpless and would have never been this better.
So, technology has made our life better in many ways.
In our daily life, technology serves us in many different ways to help us do our activities
for our needs. A television, for example, is the best entertainment and information
medium. An air plane which helps in covering huge distances in a short time, cell phones
that not just help us talk to another person but also its function is as a device to take
pictures and watch video, and we can even use them to browse in the Internet. All of
them show us how important technology is in our daily life.
Currently, the most popular topic is the internet. Talking about the Internet makes me
remember what the inventor of google said. He said “ The Internet will take over the
Wall Street”. It is true because over 2 billion of people in this universe are using the
Internet. The number of websites is so amazing. There are so many websites that
provide kinds of knowledge, experience, entertainment and business. Now it is so easy
for us to share with each other through the internet. We can access worldwide news
using the Internet. All of what we want to know and all we need are provided by the
internet.
Some people say that one of the examples of technology that bring disasters is Internet.
Raping, hacking, piracy, and plagiary are disasters created by the Internet. But, the fact
is when something is going wrong, we can’t blame the technology. The analogical thing
is like a murderer who killed someone using a knife. We can’t blame the knife, but,
instead, we must blame the murderer who used technology (knife) as a medium to do a
wrong thing. The other example is raping. Teenagers rape a girl because they have
watched video using cell phone downloaded from the Internet. It is not the Internet and
the cell phone’s fault. Immorality and lack of regulation in uploading and downloading
are the problem. So, when people don’t use the technology as wisely as they can, it’s
not technology’s fault, but it is a matter of improper morality.
Solutions are needed here to fix the contradiction of a good intention of technology with
a wrong way of using it. Now, the question is how to reduce and minimize the bad
actions and crimes done by the people using the technology. The fact tells us that we
have to find ways to save the next generations from the bad behavior and actions.
