Gesture Drawing

Gesture drawings capture the movement and energy of a figure rather than just the outline. They are used by artists as a study for finished artworks. This document discusses measuring the human figure, with all lengths measured in head units. It provides tips for measuring lengths and angles accurately, such as keeping one eye closed and the measuring arm extended. Students will spend classes sketching gestures of models and observing human proportions before their assignment to sketch figures using the learned proportions.

Measuring the Figure
Everything is
measured by
head lengths
Tips for measuring lengths and angles
• Only open 1 eye so you don’t see 2 pencils or
2 models…try it!
Tips for measuring lengths and angles
• Keep arm extended when measuring! If you bend
your elbow, it will drastically change the size of
your measuring tool compared to the model…
Tips for measuring lengths and angles
• Think of the angles of the model like the
angles of a clock:
We will spend a few classes sketching
gestures and observing the figure…
We will start with 10 minute gestures
And move down to 30 second gestures
Today’s Assignment
