T-Panel Design

The document provides design calculations for the reinforcement of Panel A, which is being used in the construction of a retaining wall for the Dimapur Bypass project in Assam, India. It details the panel dimensions and material properties, then calculates the required bending moments and reinforcement needed in the horizontal and vertical planes. It determines that 8 #8 reinforcing bars are needed horizontally and 10 #8 bars vertically to safely resist the calculated bending loads on the 3.17 square meter panel.

Calculations For Panel Reinforcement

Panel Concrete Grade fck 35 MPa

Steel Fe fy 500 MPa
Panel Type A
Panel Thickness 180 mm
Clear cover to any reinf. 55 mm
Effective depth for Vertical Reinf. 121 mm
Effective depth for Horizontal Reinf. 113 mm

Panel Thk. is 180mm and vertical soil reinforcement is placed close to inside face.

Maxm UTS of Geostrap in Vertical plane & Horizontal plane 75 kN

Maxm force in one leg of Geostrap 41.41 kN
Maxm force at each connection point 82.82 kN
(material reduction factors used 1.15, 1.03 and 1.39 and fn 1.1)
maxm force is calculated by using material factors
pl note that this is ULS force
Total force on the four connection points 331.29 kN
Panel Height 1.585 m
Panel Width 2.000 m
The effective panel size is 1.585m x 2.000m, area is 3.170 sqm
UDL on face of panel (w) assuming uniform distribution 104.5 kN/m2

As can be seen, the panel shall bend in both the planes.

Reinforcement in the Horizontal Plane:

Maxm Bending moment in the cantilever = w l^2/2 10.58 kNm/m
= 1.710 tm for panel ht.

Mu/bd 0.829 Mpa
Steel Required as per IRC112 = Fe500 221.5 mm2/m
for 1585mm high panel, total required 351 mm2
Steel Provided 8 no. 8mm dia. 402 mm2
Total reinforcement provided 402 mm2 Safe

Reinforcement in the Vertical Plane:

Maxm Bending moment in the cantilever = w l^2/2 8.36 kNm/m
= 1.705 tm for panel width
Mu/bd2 0.571 Mpa
Steel Required as per IRC 112 = Fe500 176.2 mm2/m
for 2000 mm wide panel, total required 352 mm2
Steel Provided 10 no. 8mm dia. 503 mm2 Safe
