will cause an explosion. An explosion can be eliminated by
using nitrogen gas cylinders with standard CGA (Compressed

Testing the Brake Accumulators

This test checks the following components: the cut-in pressure, the cutout pressure, nitrogen precharge and the pressure switch that
indicates low oil pressure.

REQUIRED TOOLS
Part Number Description Quantity
"JEBD3003" Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 1
171-4400 Communication Adapter Tool 1

Table 1

1. Stop the engine. Engage the parking brake. Depress the brake pedal repeatedly until there is no brake oil pressure. Pause for 2
seconds between each of the applications.

Illustration 1 g00905817

2. Connect the Communication Adapter Tool to a laptop computer that is equipped with Catipillar Electronic Technician (ET). Connect
the Communication Adapter Tool to the data link connector.
Note: The brake system pressure must be monitored with ET.

3. Observe the pressure. Before you start the engine, the oil pressure should be less than4200 kPa (610 psi).

4. Start the engine. The oil pressure will increase to a maximum. Record this pressure. This pressure is the cutout pressure of the
charging system for the brake accumulators. The correct cutout pressure should be 16000 ± 345 kPa (2300 ± 50 psi).

5. Apply the service brakes repeatedly while the engine is running. Verify that the pressure drops consistently. Record the point, when
the pressure begins to increase quickly. This pressure is the cut-in pressure. The cut-in pressure should be 9600 ± 345 kPa (1400 ±
50 psi).

6. Stop the engine. After waiting 40 seconds, turn the engine start key to the ON position but do not start the engine. The warning
indicator for the brake system should illuminate for 3 seconds while the dash panel cluster performs a start-up test. If any of the
warning lights do not illuminate, the dash panel cluster may need replaced.

7. Depress the brake pedal until the pressure gauge decreases to approximately 6800 kPa (1000 psi). The warning light on the dash
for the low brake oil pressure should illuminate. The minimum number of brake applications for single disc brakes is 7. The
minimum number of brake applications for dual disc brakes is 5. If warning light does not illuminate, replace the pressure sensor.

8. Continue depressing the brake pedals after the warning light for low brake pressure illuminates. Watch for a rapid decrease in the
brake pressure. Record the pressure, when the pressure decreases rapidly. This pressure is the approximate nitrogen precharge
pressure in the brake accumulator. The proper precharge pressure of the accumulators is 3450 kPa (500 psi). If the nitrogen
precharge pressure is not within the specification, then go to the "Charging of the Brake Accumulators".

9. Remove all of the test equipment.

Charging the Brake Accumulators

REQUIRED TOOLS
Part Number Description Quantity
175-5507 Nitrogen Charging Group 1

Table 2

Stop the engine. Depress the brake pedal repeatedly until there is no brake pressure.

To ensure that the nitrogen charge is correct, each brake accumulator piston must be at the bottom of the accumulator cylinder. Nitrogen
gas pressure varies with the temperature. To obtain the most accurate nitrogen charge, the temperature of each accumulator must be
identical to the air temperature around the accumulators.

Charging Pressure and Temperature Relationship for a Typical

3450 kPa (500 psi) Accumulator
Temperature °C (°F) Pressure kPa (psi)

-7 °C (20 °F) 3123 kPa (453 psi)

-1 °C (30 °F) 3185 kPa (462 psi)

4 °C (40 °F) 3254 kPa (472 psi)

10 °C (50 °F) 3323 kPa (482 psi)

16 °C (60 °F) 3385 kPa (491 psi)

21 °C (70 °F) 3448 kPa (500 psi)

27 °C (80 °F) 3509 kPa (509 psi)

32 °C (90 °F) 3578 kPa (519 psi)

38 °C (100 °F) 3640 kPa (528 psi)

43 °C (110 °F) 3709 kPa (538 psi)

49 °C (120 °F) 3771 kPa (547 psi)

Table 3

If an accumulator has less than half of the required amount of precharge pressure, the accumulator should be charged. Then charge the
accumulator again after you apply the service brakes repeatedly in order to prevent trapping oil in the accumulator. Oil in the accumulator
will give an inaccurate precharge reading.

The brake accumulators are located on the right side of the machine. The panel that is behind the cab must be removed in order to allow
full access to the accumulators.

Illustration 5 g00913190

Illustration 6 g00918133

1. Remove cover (9) from the brake accumulator. Remove cap (10) from the nitrogen charging valve on the accumulator.

2. Use a 8T-0857 Pressure Gauge (7) with a range of 0 to 10000 kPa (0 to 1450 psi) in order to check the nitrogen charge in the brake
accumulators.
Note: The 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator can be used in place of the above tools.

3. Install chuck (4) onto the nitrogen charging valve on the brake accumulator.

4. Open valve (6) and charge line (5) to the correct precharge.

5. Turn valve handle (3) completely in the clockwise direction.

6. If the reading on the pressure gauge is too high, slowly open valve (6) in order to lower the pressure. If the reading on the pressure
gauge is too low, use the following procedure to charge the brake accumulator:

a. Connect a hose from the nitrogen cylinder to valve (6) .

b. Close valve (6) and open the valve on the nitrogen cylinder. Adjust screw (2) on regulator assembly (8) until pressure gauge
(1) is at the correct charging pressure.

c. Open valve (6) and charge the brake accumulator. Then, close valve (6) . If pressure gauge (7) and pressure gauge (1) show
the same reading and the readings do not change, the brake accumulator has the correct charge.
If the pressure reading on gauge (7) decreases, open valve (6) and allow more nitrogen to fill the accumulator.

Perform this procedure until pressure gauge (7) and pressure gauge (1) show the same reading. Make sure that neither
reading changes when valve (6) is closed.

7. Close valve (6) . Close the valve on the nitrogen cylinder.

8. Turn valve (3) on chuck (4) outward in the counterclockwise direction. Remove the test equipment.

9. Perform this procedure for the other brake accumulator.
