Background information
The spin cycle on a washing machine aims to remove as much water as possible by the end of the cycle. This is achieved by spinning the
washing load at high speed inside a large, rotating metal drum. The normal (centripetal) force between the clothes and the inside of the drum
pushes them around in a circle. The water is not acted upon by this force because it can slip straight through the drum holes. Whilst the
clothes go round in a circle, the water goes in a straight line—straight through the holes and out of the clothes. The length and speed of the
spin cycle can affect the running cost of the machine (due to electricity) and it can also affect the shrinkage, damage or degradation of clothes.
Manufacturers of washing machines want efficiency (low electrical energy) and effectiveness (quick drying) in the spin cycle of machines that
they produce. In other words, they want to have as short a cycle as possible and have the clothes be as dry as possible by the end of the spin
cycle.
