LESSON 1

Starting Up

Stunts are defined as activities in the form of play that

test your flexibility, strength, agility, balance, coordination
and endurance. They are an extension of the conditioning
exercises that many have been doing. Stunts are a part of
gymnastics which are difficult but exciting to do requiring
great skill, correct technique and daring performance.

Physical Fitness through Folk Dances

The Philippines enjoys a rich cultural heritage which includes a diverse collection of
traditional dances. From the well-known national dance the Tinikling, which pays
homage to the movements of a much-loved bird, to dances that reflect elements of daily
Philippine life, these folk dances all offer a glimpse into the history of the country.

Traditional Folk Dances of the Philippines

The Philippines has many popular folk dances which have evolved and changed as they
have been passed down from generation to generation. Although a particular dance
might be performed slightly differently from one region to the next, its remains true to its
roots. Dancing plays an important role in Filipino culture, telling their history and
preserving traditions through folk dances and music. These dances are entertaining to
observe, and even more fun to learn and perform yourself.

1. The Itik-Itik
The best description of the Itik-Itik is that the steps mimic the way a
duck walks, as well as the way it splashes water on its back to
attract a mate. According to popular tradition, the dance was
created by a lady named Kanang who choreographed the steps
while dancing at a baptismal party. The other guests copied her
movements, and everyone liked the dance so much that it has been
passed along ever since.

2. The Tinikling
The Tinikling is considered by many to be the Philippines' national
dance. The dance's movements imitate the movement of the tikling
bird as it walks around through tall grass and between tree
branches. People perform the dance using bamboo poles. The
dance is composed of three basic steps which include singles,
doubles and hops. It looks similar to playing jump rope, except that
the dancers perform the steps around and between the bamboo
poles, and the dance becomes faster until someone makes a
mistake and the next set of dancers takes a turn.

3. The Maglalatik
The Maglalatik is a mock war dance that depicts a fight over
coconut meat, a highly-prized food. The dance is broken into four
parts: two devoted to the battle and two devoted to reconciling. The
men of the dance wear coconut shells as part of their costumes,
and they slap them in rhythm with the music. The Maglalatik is
danced in the religious procession during the fiesta of Biñan as an
offering to San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.

4. The Cariñosa
The Cariñosa is a dance made for flirting! Dancers make a number
of flirtatious movements as they hide behind fans or handkerchiefs
and peek out at one another. The essence of the dance is the
courtship between two sweethearts.

Value and Importance of Philippine Folk dance

Folk arts, specifically folk music and dance, embody fundamental values of great worth

to our culture, our nation, and our children. There is no better way to share time together
as families and friends. Our job is to preserve the joyful tunes we've inherited from our
ancestors and to pass them on to others. A group called Colerain Connection is quite
dedicated to the dissemination and preservation of traditional folk arts. It is very
important to see musical artists performing on instruments they have hand crafted, or
playing vibrant melodies from their grandfather's fiddle. This group is all about preserving
history and tradition.

Value
Philippine folk dance helps keep the people connected to their ancestry and their
traditions. Folk dance helps to preserve the cultural unity of the people

Importance
People think folk dances are important because they help keep a culture alive.  People
have been doing folk dances for hundreds of years, and there is value keeping that
tradition alive. Folk dances are important because they preserve the Philippine culture
and pass it on to the next generation. They are a uniting force to the Philippine people.

Psalm 149: 3-4

“Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel
and harp.  4  For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble
with victory.”

A communicable disease is one that is spread from

one person to another through a variety of ways
that include: contact with blood and bodily fluids;
breathing in an airborne virus; or by being bitten by
an insect.

Keeping Yourself with Medicines
Medicines are chemicals or compounds used to cure, halt, or prevent disease;
ease symptoms; or help in the diagnosis of illnesses. Advances in medicines
have enabled doctors to cure many diseases and save lives. These days,
medicines come from a variety of sources. Many were developed from
substances found in nature, and even today many are extracted from plants.

When we think about taking medicines, we often think of pills. But medicines can
be delivered in many ways, such as:
 liquids that are swallowed
 drops that are put into ears or eyes
 creams, gels, or ointments that are rubbed onto the skin
 inhalers (like nasal sprays or asthma inhalers)
 patches that are stuck to skin (called transdermal patches)
 tablets that are placed under the tongue (called sublingual medicines; the
medicine is absorbed into blood vessels and enters the bloodstream)
 injections (shots) or intravenous (inserted into a vein) medicines

Taking Medicines
No matter what type of medicine your doctor prescribes, it's always important to
be safe and follow some basic rules:
 If you feel worse after taking a medicine, tell your doctor right away.
 Double-check that you have the right medicine. If you get the same
prescription filled more than once, check that it's the same shape, size,
and color as the last time. If not, be sure to ask the pharmacist about it.
 Read the label and follow directions. Ask if you have questions.
 Take medicines exactly as prescribed. If the instructions say take one
tablet four times a day, don't take two tablets twice a day. It's not the
same.
 Ask if the medicine is likely to affect everyday tasks such as driving or
concentrating in school.
 Don't take more medicine than is recommended. It won't make you heal
faster or feel better quicker. In fact, an overdose of medicine can make
you sick.
 Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions. For instance, he
or she may tell you to take a medicine with food to help lessen the
stomach upset it can cause or instead to take the medicine on an empty
stomach so as not to interfere with the medicine's absorption into your
body.
 Never share prescription medicine with anyone else, even if that person
has the same thing as you do. Today's medicines are very complex, and
the dosages tend to be precisely prescribed for each person's needs.
Either under-dosing or overdosing can be harmful. Additionally, someone

10 | P a g e – P E a n d H e a l t h 4
else's body may react differently to the same medicine (for example, if the
person has an allergy to one of the components of the medicine).
 If you're already taking a medicine but also want to take something you
can buy over-the-counter, ask the pharmacist. There could be a bad
interaction between the medicines.
 Always tell your doctor and pharmacist if you're taking any other
medicines or any herbal supplements so that he or she can check for any
interactions between the medicines.
 Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or might be pregnant. Some
medicines can be harmful to the baby. Also, let your doctor or pharmacist
know if you are breastfeeding, as some medications can cause problems
with nursing.
 Remember that drinking alcohol can dramatically worsen the side effects
of many medicines.
 Even if you get sick with what you think is the same old thing, don't decide
on your own that you know what's wrong and take some leftover medicine.
Taking that medicine for a different disease might not work — and it can
even be harmful. Talk to your doctor first.
 Take antibiotics for the full length of the time prescribed, even if you start
to be feel better, so that all the germs are killed and the infection doesn't
bounce back.
 Keep medicines in their original labeled containers, if possible.
 Don't use medicine that has expired, especially prescription medicine.
 Medicines should not be stored in your bathroom because heat and
humidity can affect the potency of the drug. Most medicines should be
kept at room temperature and away from sunlight. Some must be
refrigerated. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you aren't sure.
 Make sure all medicines are stored safely and out of the reach of younger
brothers or sisters and pets.
 If you have any allergies, tell your doctor and pharmacist before they start
you on a new medicine.
 If you get a rash, start itching, vomiting, or have trouble breathing after
starting a medicine, tell your parents immediately. Breathing difficulty,
breaking out in hives, or suddenly developing swelling of the tongue, lips,
face, or other body parts may be signs of a severe allergic reaction — get
emergency medical care right away.

What is the Difference Between Over-the-Counter and Prescription?

There are two general classifications of drugs: prescription only (Rx only) and
over-the-counter (OTC).

 Prescription only drugs are only available with a valid prescription from a

prescriber. These drugs are heavily regulated and require a visit to a
prescriber, a diagnosis and monitoring by a prescriber to ensure the
medication is working and that it is working safely. Prescription drugs are
11 | P a g e – P E a n d H e a l t h 4
intended for use by one individual patient to treat a specific condition and
when starting the medication each patient is legally entitled to speak with
a pharmacist about the drug.

 Over-the-counter drugs are available for purchase without a prescription

and can be purchased right off the shelves at a store - without a visit to a
prescriber or consultation with a pharmacist. OTC medications are not
intended for a specific individual, although depending on the medication,
such as creams, eye drops or nasal sprays, the user may want to be the
only consumer of the medication.  OTC drugs are monitored by the FDA,
but it is not as strict as the process prescription drugs must go through.
Manufacturers are required to make drugs only based on a specific
formula with regards to the strength of the drug and they must have FDA
approved labeling and FDA specific dosage to be on the market.

Pharmaceuticals or drugs or medicines are classified in various other groups

besides their origin on the basis of pharmacological properties like mode of
action and their pharmacological action or activity, such as by chemical
properties, mode or route of administration, biological system affected,
or therapeutic effects. An elaborate and widely used classification system is
the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC system).
The World Health Organization keeps a list of essential medicines.

A sampling of classes of medicine includes:

1. Antipyretics: reducing fever (pyrexia/pyresis)
2. Analgesics: reducing pain (painkillers)
3. Antimalarial drugs: treating malaria
4. Antibiotics: inhibiting germ growth
5. Antiseptics: prevention of germ growth
near burns, cuts and wounds
6. Mood stabilizers: lithium and valpromide
7. Hormone replacements: Premarin
8. Oral contraceptives: Enovid, "biphasic" pill, and "triphasic" pill
9. Stimulants: methylphenidate, amphetamine
10. Tranquilizers: meprobamate, chlorpromazine, reserpine, chlordiaze
poxide, diazepam, and alprazolam
11. Statins: lovastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin

The Dangers of Misused Prescription Drugs

There are many ways to misuse medication, and many reasons students choose
to start. Unfortunately, nowadays, misusing medication is prevalent on university
campuses. Some students blame this on the competitiveness of college —
hoping that taking a stimulant will help them get an edge up on the competition
— while others do it purely for recreational purposes.

Here’s a list of just some of the negative effects of misusing medication:

12 | P a g e – P E a n d H e a l t h 4
• Health problems. Abusing the above medications comes with various dangers.
Remember that even though it’s common for students to misuse medication, it’s
seriously unsafe. Opioids can cause choking, changes in mood, decreased
cognitive function, interruptions in the menstrual cycle, infertility and slowed
breathing. There’s even a risk of coma or death if there’s a severe slowdown in
breathing. CNS depressants — sedatives and tranquilizers — can cause memory
problems and lead to seizures. Using some stimulants even in the short term can
trigger paranoia; high doses can cause an increase in body temperature and
abnormal heartbeat. There’s also a risk of cardiovascular problems and fatal
seizures.

• Addiction. Some of these medications already can be addictive. When

misused, the risk of addiction jumps exponentially. Becoming addicted to a drug
means that you’re physically dependent on it, and you develop an uncontrollable
craving for it. Typically you need more of the drug and in higher doses to get the
same effects, which can be dangerous. Discontinuing the drug results in
withdrawal symptoms — physical symptoms like nausea, shaking, sweating and
nervousness. Withdrawal from opioids results in symptoms such as bone pain,
insomnia, vomiting and uncontrolled leg movements. Stimulant withdrawal can
produce depression, exhaustion and sleep problems. Withdrawal from some
sedatives and tranquilizers can lead to life-threatening consequences.

• Accidents. Since these drugs can cause reactions that interfere with driving,
such as sedation, car accidents are possible. Also, there’s a greater risk for injury
since your thinking is impaired. Misusing medication can also cause poor
judgment, which can put you in dicey situations (like becoming a victim of a
crime).

• Poor academic performance. While some students take medication to boost

school performance or ease anxiety, it ends up having the opposite effect —
especially if addiction becomes an issue.

• Legal trouble. Taking medication that isn’t prescribed to you or misusing your
own medication is illegal. The likelihood of committing a crime also increases
when you’re abusing drugs. If you’re caught, you can face fines, jail time and
suspension from school.

1 CORINTHIANS 10:13
”No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.
And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can
bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that
you can endure it.”
