Research Methods
1. How do you define a research problem? Give three examples to illustrate your answer.
A research problem should answer a solve a certain dilemma or issue. From a general
problem, the researcher must narrow it down for it to be specific, clearly stated and attainable
at a given time. For instance, the broad general research problem is the effectivity of the online
class, and under this, there can be some ambiguities. Some ambiguities are what are the effects
of online class, what are the problems that are occurring during online class and if students are
really learning. And it can be narrowed down into a clear and proper research problem.
a. Experience survey;
Experience survey serves as a tool to gather additional information and for a deeper
understanding about the problem which will help to develop the research questions or problem
and if there are techniques or possible solutions that might help them in doing the research.
b. Pilot survey;
A pilot survey helps the researcher to identify if the type of survey is efficient in fulfilling
the purpose of the research in order to have some developments for the main survey. It is also
given to smaller scale of sample size.
A research problem must have a purpose in which it can be achieved in the end of the
research. It should serve or answer an issue that a certain individual or group has and there
must be a ways or procedures in finding answers for the problem.
After gathering and looking for dilemmas than can be a topic for a research it is
important to rephrase the research problem into something a researcher can work on. This part
is where a researcher makes it specific in order to set the limits of the research problem.
2. “Knowing what data are available often serves to narrow down the problem itself as well
as the technique that might be used.” Explain the underlying idea in this statement in the
context of defining a research problem.
Understanding what data or information are available makes it easier to find a problem
and the course of action to search for the answer. Based on the discussion, in order to identify a
research problem properly and clearly a systematic manner should be followed which is to state
the problem in a general way, to understand the nature of a problem, to search or survey for
available literature, to develop ideas through discussions and lastly is to rephrase the research
problem into a working proposition. On the first three steps it is a course of action wherein you
are looking for the data that are available around you just like what the statement said on the first
part will help you to narrow down to a specific problem after discussing it with your fellow
researchers.
