UNIT 1 Interaction: Colegio Marista Castilla

This document provides an overview of the five senses - sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch - and their associated organs. It also summarizes the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems of the human body. Regarding the senses, it describes how light, sound waves, smells, flavors, and nerve endings are processed by the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin, respectively, and transmitted as signals to the brain. It notes there are 206 bones in the skeletal system and over 600 muscles in the muscular system. The nervous system has two parts - the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system connecting to organs via sensory nerves.

The 5 Senses
 The eye is the organ of the sense of sight. (ojo, órgano de la vista)
The light enters the eye through the cornea, the pupil and the lens (la luz entra a través de la córnea,
la pupila y el cristalino). The lens(cristalino) projects an inverted image(imagen invertida) to the retina
and it transmits the information through the optic nerve (nervio óptico) to the brain. The iris is the
coloured part of the eye.
 The ear is the organ of the sense of hearing. (oído, órgano del oído)
The sound waves(ondas del sonido) enter the ear(oreja). They go along the auditory canal(canal
auditivo) to the eardrum(tímpano). The eardrum vibrates. The vibrations pass along the 3tiny bones:
hammer, anvil and stirrup(martillo, yunque y estribo). They go to the cochlea and then they go along
the auditory nerve(nervio auditivo) to the brain.
 The nose is the organ of the sense of smell. (nariz, órgano del olfato)
The smell enters the nasal cavities (cavidades nasales)through the nostrils(fosas
nasales). Then the olfactory nerve(nervio olfativo) sends the information to the brain.

 The tongue is the organ of the sense of taste. (lengua, órgano del gusto)
The tongue has thousands of taste buds(papilas gustativas) to detect flavours(sabores), like sweet, sour,
bitter and salty(dulce, ácido, amargo y salado). The taste buds send the information to the brain.
 The skin is the organ of the sense of touch. (piel, órgano del tacto)
There are 2layers(capas): epidermis, to protect our body from the exterior, and dermis, that has nerve endings(terminaciones
nerviosas), blood vessels and sweat glands(vasos sanguíneos y glándulas sudoríporas).

The nervous system(Sistema nervioso)

 The nervous system controls all the functions of our body. It has 2 parts:
central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
(sistema nervioso central y periférico)
- The central nervous system is made up of the brain(encéfalo) and spinal cord(médula espinal).
The brain is divided in 3parts: The cerebrum(cerebro)controls the voluntary actions, the cerebellum(cerebelo) controls
balance and movement, and the brain stem(bulbo raquídeo) controls the involuntary actions.
The spinal cord is inside the spinal column. The peripheral nervous system is connected to it.
- The peripheral nervous system, connected to the central nervous system, is formed by all the nerves connected to the
sensory nerves in the organs. (El sistema nervioso periférico, conectado al sistema nervioso central, está
formado por todos los nervios conectados a los nervios sensitivos en los órganos.)

Skeletal system
There are 206 bones in our skeleton. They are hard(duros) and rigid. The place where 2bones meet is
called a joint(El lugar donde se unen dos huesos se llama articulación). The skeleton supports our body up,
gives it the shape and protect internal organs(El esqueleto mantiene nuestro cuerpo, le da forma y protege
los órganos internos). Ligaments keep bones together.
Muscular system
We have more than 600 muscles in our body. Bones and muscles are joined by the tendons (tendones,
unen los huesos y músculos). Skeletal muscles work in pairs: when one contracts, the other one relaxes (Los músculos esqueléticos
trabajan en parejas para mover un hueso, cuando uno se contrae, el otro se relaja.). Muscles only pull(tirar).

You should learn the names of bones and muscles.
