What I Know
Read the story and answer the questions that follow. Encircle the
letter of the correct answer.
The Talking Bird
Kiaw is a talking bird found in the thick forests of Palawan. It lives
in the tree trunks. To catch it, men have to climb the tall trees. Only few
people possess this kind of bird because it is difficult to catch.
The Kiaw is a very interesting creature. It likes bananas, papayas
and red pepper. It also drinks a lot of water. This black bird takes a bath
at least five times a day.
The Kiaw is also very loyal to its master. To make the Kiaw talk, its
master repeats a word many times. This rare bird can learn to talk in three
months. The Kiaw loves its master very much. When it is given away, it
feels very lonely, then it dies. It also does not like to see blood. If it sees
blood or the color red, it hurts until it dies.

This module focuses on noting the significant details in a literary
text read. You are given exercises and activities that are carefully
chosen to motivate your interest in learning noting details.

Teddy is an eagle. He loves to fly to the east. One day,
he found a green bead on a leaf. The eagle thought the bead
was a seed. So, he ate the bead. Teddy did not like the bead.
He could feel the hard bead. “Meat is better,” he said. “I will fly
to the east to look for some meat.”

The Carabao and the Cow
Once upon a time, the cow and the carabao were very good
friends. They went together everywhere in the pasture. One day,
they agreed to go the river to swim.
“Let us go early so that we will not be troubled by the people
who go to the river to wash clothes,” said the cow.
“Yes,” replied the carabao. “And let’s be there before the bad
boys who throw stones at us arrive.”
Very early next morning, they were at the riverbank. They took
off their hides – hides could be still be taken off like that – and
carefully laid them on the grass. Then they jumped into the cool
water and enjoyed themselves.
They were having such fun swimming that they did not notice
the time. Soon, several women arrived carrying basins and
bundles of clothes to wash. With them were some little boys
ready to jump into the water.
“Animals!” cried one of the women. “Drive them away or we
shall catch all their dirt! Pedro! Juan! Stone those beasts so that
they will get out!”
Running down the riverbank, the boys started throwing
pebbles at the carabao and the cow.
The two were very much frightened. They each hurried up the
bank and snatched at the nearest hide. It happened that in their
hurry, the carabao and the cow exchanged hides.

The cow, who was smaller than the carabao, put on the hide
of his friend. It proved too loose, especially under the neck.
The carabao squeezed himself into the cow’s light hide. It was
so tight that he never afterward could squeeze himself out again.

The Good Samaritan
One day, a man was going down from Jerusalem to
Jericho. He met a group of robbers. They stripped him off his
clothes. They beat him and went away, leaving the man half –
dead.
A priest who was going down the same road saw the man.
But he passed by on the other side.
A Levite also passed by the same way and saw the
beaten- up man. Like the priest, he also passed on the other
side.
Finally, a Samaritan came by the same road. When he saw
the wounded man, he took pity on him. He went to him and
bandaged his wounds, pouring oil on them. Then he put the man
on his own donkey. He took him to an inn and took care of him.
