2 Maintenance

Replacing wheel studs

This operation should be performed only after special
authorization has been requested and obtained from the vehicle’s
manufacturer.

Stud replacement is carried out whenever one or more studs are

distorted or damaged as a consequence of a collision.

On-vehicle operations :
Ensure diff. lock – if fitted – is engaged before removing axle
drive shaft, if so required.

1. Remove wheel and drum where applicable.

2. Remove damaged stud(s). Fig. 4

NOTE: Visually ensure that stud bores are free from cracks,
distortions or any kind of damage.

3. Fit new stud(s) to relevant housing(s). (Fig. 4)

NOTE: Position the stud so that the flat on its head faces the
disc axis. (Fig. 5)

4. Insert suitable spacers between disc face and stud thread.

5. Screw a nut onto the stud and tighten until the stud head
bevel
touches the hub or disc face where applicable. (now installation
is completed).
Fig. 5
NOTE: Spacer must be longer than the shank of the stud.
Tighten stud nut according to technical data supplied by the
vehicle’s manufacturer.

6. Undo the nut and remove spacers.

7. Refit drum (where applicable) and wheel.

2 Maintenance

Wheel end assembly overhaul

Dismantling operations
Raise the vehicle observing current safety standards and
manufacturer’s instructions.

On-vehicle operations:
Ensure diff. lock - if fitted - is engaged before removing axle drive
shaft, if so required.

1. Remove wheel.
Fig. 6 2. Remove brake drum or caliper as fitted. If drum brake fitted
refer to relevant maintenance manual for removal of brake
shoes. (Fig.6)

3. Ensure service operation area is clean and free from defects;

clean if necessary by removing deposits and/or dirt, as
B required.

4. Check for oil leakages and seal condition.

5. Place a container under the wheel hub and drain oil that may
have accumulated in the hub space while the vehicle has been
Fig. 7 in use. Oil disposal should be carried out according to the
legislation in force.

6. Use tool (A) - WET 13 - to stop rotation of wheel end assembly

and undo screws (B) fastening axle drive shaft to wheel hub.
(Fig.7)

7. Remove axle shaft (C) and drain oil. (Fig. 8)

8. Remove spacer ring. (Fig. 9)

Checking components
Clean components thoroughly to enable overhaul and correct
reassembly; particular care should be taken in removing traces of
sealing compound from axle shaft and wheel hub mating faces by
means of a scraper.

Ensure perfect condition of all components dismantled during

overhaul; check surfaces for scores or damage before
reassembly.

In case of doubt as to the condition of any unit component,

always replace the part concerned. (Fig. 18)
