Detailing, Anchorage, and Ductility of CFRP Retrofitted Reinforced Concrete Girders-2-3

The document discusses how adding diagonal CFRP anchors to longitudinal CFRP sheets strengthening reinforced concrete beams can enhance member ductility and prevent brittle failure. It also discusses different types of CFRP anchors that have been developed and tested for use in flexural members strengthened with CFRP.

2 BEHAVIOR OF CFRP STRENGTHENED REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

2.1 Ductility of CFRP strengthened Flexural Members

Experimental tests have shown that addition of longitudinal CFRP reinforcement increases the
flexural strength of girders, however, with limited ductility. In order to enhance member ductility,
diagonal CFRP anchors could be added to anchor the longitudinal CFRP sheet to the concrete
girder, as shown in Figure 1(b). Figure 1(c) shows the flexural response of CFRP strengthened
beam with and without diagonal anchors. CFRP diagonal anchors prevent premature brittle failure
of CFRP strengthened concrete beams, and consequently increase member strength and ductility.

2.2 Detailing of CFRP strengthened Flexural Members

Several types of CFRP and metallic anchors have been developed and tested. In practice, it is
preferable to use CFRP end anchors whenever possible, as they are light in weight and have high
corrosion resistance. Figures 2 and 3 show two different types of CFRP anchors.
