Purposive Communication Lesson 1 Quiz

George Herbert Mead is considered the founder of symbolic interactionism. The theory proposes that meanings of things and events arise from social interactions and are interpreted by individuals. People live in both the natural and symbolic world, where social actors give meaning to objects and interpret each other's actions and communications through language, symbols, and shared meanings developed in their society. An example given is how a traffic light uses colors as symbols for stop, go, and caution based on the meanings agreed upon in that social context. Lesson 1

I. Motive Question

2. What is symbolic interactionism?

George Herbert Mead is the founder of symbolic interactionism. His theory outlines that
meanings on things or events are the basis of human interaction, those meanings were developed
through interaction in the society and these meanings are then interpreted by individuals. Symbolic
interactionism dwells on the symbolic meaning people learn through social interaction. Theory says
people live both in the natural and symbolic world. To live in the natural environment is also to perceive
things in symbols out of the interaction made by the members of society. Social actors give meaning to
object as alone it held none, this is why symbolic interaction is a process of action interpretation.
Communication is then formed from the exchange of meaning, language and symbols in society. An
example is a traffic light, red means stop, green means go and yellow is caution. These are just colors but
social actors gave them meaning. Now people living in society perceives the colors in a traffic light not
only as colors but as caution, stop and go.

The story involves lovers Ron and Myles who despite being in love had a fall out due to faulty
communication they had throughout their relationship.

Symbolic interaction is displayed between the two as they live their relationship. Myles is an
independent woman, one thing Ron admires about her. However being so for long lead to often
forgetting about Ron, doing things without him. This action was perceived by Ron as neglect and Myles
not loving him. This is the root their problems that follows. They still talk and stayed as lovers but Ron
doubts Myles because of her actions. There is a fault in terms of reciprocal communication between Ron
and Myles. When Ron felt neglect, he communicated his dissatisfaction to Myles. Although she did
communicate back, but failed to notice the symbolic meaning within those words, how he was hurting.
There is no clear exchange of ideas and feelings as their character serves as a noise to properly decoding
the message. Myles being independent while Ron wanting assurance and interdependent relationship.
Now comes entropy, their differences became a disorder in the system of their communication. As Ron
feels Myles not getting his intentions and vice versa, they gave up on their relationship. It was mostly
Ron perceiving uncertainty from previous miscommunication with his girlfriend and voiced he wanted
out. After meeting again year after, both matured and realised their flaws, they got back together but
with a better touch to each other’s emotions and healthy communication.
