Assessment - Module 1 - Introduction To Sts

The document discusses three questions related to science, technology, and society (STS). 1. The first question discusses why students must engage with both the scientific and technical aspects of problems as well as the ethical and political issues. 2. The second question extracts the message that science impacts everyone because we live in a world shaped by science, and science is in turn shaped by social factors. 3. The third question reflects on an STS issue in society today, identifying the slow judicial system and suggesting the government investigate cases thoroughly and implement strict guidelines to ensure a fair justice system.

Module 1 - Assessment

1. According to Dr. Fidel Nemenzo, former Science and Society Program head and
current vice chancellor for Research and Development of the UP Diliman, “Students
must be engaged not only in the S&T aspect of these problems, but also on the ethical
and political issues concerning STS.”Why?

Answer: We, as the students, are responsible to engage in both Science, Technology
and Society problems which deal in ethical and political issues for awareness of each
one of us. We must all be knowledgeable not only for the science and technology itself
that we constantly know but also for the issues involving the use of it when it comes to
decision making of the ethical and political matters. We are not just living here to stick
and base on the imparted information of the government officials which they wanted us
to believe for us to remain ignorant and unaware of the anomalies happening in our
country. We must have the contribution to nation building so that we can lead into
progress and not be fooled by the people who lead us. We just need to be wise enough
to know everything that is happening around us, that will happen by learning and
exploring about Science, Technology and Society aspects through studies,
observations, researches to answer the defined questions in a particular issue with
accurate basis for us to be knowledgeable in applying the practice of ethics in different
situation especially in politics.

2. Extract and explain the message from this statement “Science does not concern
science majors alone, it is also the concern of every individual because we live in a
world created by science and at the same time, science is shaped by social factors that
we are part of”.

nswer: Yes it’s true that Science does not concern science majors alone. It was
A
holistically concerned with what is happening in the world created by science that
includes every individual whereas the study, experimentation, and observation answers
everything in connection with the ideal experiences caused by socially constructed
factors to shape Science that exists in our life. Social factors have been the reason for
its progress because of the demands of the people to seek knowledge for the
improvement of the society that we are part of. Hence, Science lies within the social
factors to give credible and inevitable basis as it is being studied to answer some of our
questions and curiosity, with that science is improving which associates the
development of society and technology. In fact, it’s like a cycle that then improves and
shapes each one of them that have a part in the lives of everyone.

3. One of the goals of STS in education is to develop civic engagement and critical
thinking. Reflect and think of other issues aside from the issues we tackled in our
conference. Cite one STS issue in our society today and suggest ways on how the
government can address such issues.

Answer: I think one of the issues we have that has not been resolved and valued until
now is the fair justice or the slowest judicial system in the Philippines. A justice that
must be delivered immediately where there should be no poor and there should be no
rich; justice must be fair to those who seek it. The in charge government officials such
as the policeman, lawyers and other people that have concern needs to be fair
considering that we have the laws to be followed for the smooth resolution of the cases.
They should investigate and study the cases first before coming up with a decision like
catching the person or criminal because for some reason there are policemen who just
kill people without initial findings and evidence; there are also people behind the
government who use their work as a power to intimidate their fellow human beings so
when they are the one to blame will just be okay because they serve the country and
they are part of government ( just like the Sonya Gregorio and Frank Gregorio crime who
was shot by Policeman, Sergeant Jonel Nuezca). To conclude, the government should
implement a strict justice system and guidelines as well as there should be protection to
the rights of the people especially the suspect to be fair.
