2017: The Year of Champions

Doubling Down!

The Year Of Two World Championships

2017 will be remembered for many things.

Politically, we saw a wild outsider, Donald Trump, beat the odds

and take up residence in the White House as the new American
President, while across the Atlantic, Emmanuel Macron became
the youngest person ever to occupy the Palais de l’Élysée as
President of France.

For IPSC, there will also be two major events, and both of them
are world championships!

Having two world shoots in one year was not the original plan.
While the Handgun World Shoot in France was always scheduled
for 2017, the inaugural Rifle World Shoot was supposed to take
place in 2016, but a variety of factors forced a deferral until
2017.

6
7
Nevertheless, the show must go on, and both France and
Russia are working diligently so that their respective events
will be memorable.

Rifle World Shoot I, Russia.

The Opening Ceremony for this event will be held on 4th
June, and it will conclude with an Awards Dinner on 11
June.

As usual, before the main competition takes place a

number of seminars will be held, as well as the Pre-Match
for Regional Directors, Sponsors, Patrons and Match
Officials.

This event will not only be the inaugural IPSC Rifle World
Championship, it will also be the first major IPSC competition
held in the relatively young region of Russia.

The venue is the impressive 160 hectare Patriot Park,

situated at Kubinka, near Moscow. This huge facility has
1 shooting bay 1,400 meters long, 21 shooting bays 300
meters long and 10 shooting bays 50 meters long.

8
2017: The Year of Champions
We sincerely hope that the 1,400 metre range will not be
used, because none of our competitors will be equipped
with intercontinental bullets!

The Patriot Park was constructed by the Ministry of Defense

of the Russian Federation. In addition to the world class
shooting range and ancillary buildings, there are other
impressive facilities including restaurants and a museum.

9
While the Handgun World Shoot
in France was always scheduled
for 2017, the inaugural Rifle World
Shoot was supposed to take place
in 2016, but a variety of factors
forced a deferral until 2017.

The primary sponsor is Kalashnikov Concern, but other

sponsors of note include Bank Jugra, the VTB Group and
5.11 Tactical.

Match Director Vitaly Kryuchin, who is also Regional

Director of IPSC Russia and IROA Range Master Ola
Dahlbäck from Sweden, and their respective teams,
are doing everything possible to set the bar high, so
that competitors and Match Officials alike will have a
wonderful time.

Handgun World Shoot XVIII, France.

The largest and most prestigious event on the IPSC
calendar, Handgun World Shoot XVIII, will be held at the
brand new National Shooting Sport Center located at
Châteauroux-Déols, in the Loire Valley region.

Managed by the French Shooting Federation (FFTIR), the

range has an exceptional geographical position in the
heart of France, just a two and a half hour drive from Paris.

13
All 1,152 slots in the Main Match were immediately
subscribed as soon as they were released, and another
500 competitors are eagerly standing by on the waiting list
in the hope that a vacancy will somehow arise.

The Opening Ceremony for this event will be held on 27th

August, and it will conclude with an Awards Dinner on 3
September.

As usual, there will be 30 courses of fire, and we have no

doubt whatsoever that every handgun skill will be tested.

Managed by the French Shooting

Federation (FFTIR), the range
has an exceptional geographical
position in the heart of France,
just a two and a half hour drive
from Paris.
Competitors and Match Officials from at least 70 of IPSC’s
102 regions are expected to participate.

Match Director Stéphane Quertinier, who is also Regional

Director of IPSC France, will be supported by IROA Range
Master Adrie de Bot from the Netherlands and his team.

The primary sponsor is Fratelli Tanfoglio from Italy.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR Phoutthasack Souk Aloun

YEAR ESTABLISHED 2011

WEBSITE www.ipsc.org

If IPSC regions were described in boxing terms, then IPSC Laos is

punching well above its weight!

Despite being one of our younger and smaller regions, IPSC Laos
burst onto the international scene, with justifiable fanfare, on the
opening of their expansive, world-class shooting complex in the
capital city of Vientiane.

Known as the Five April International Shooting Range, it is

comprised of 36 IPSC shooting bays, in addition to shooting bays
dedicated to Trap & Skeet and other Olympic disciplines. There is
also a 300 metre rifle range.

Each shooting bay has a huge overhead shelter complete with

ceiling fans to protect competitors from the elements. The floor
of each shooting bay has a subtle, but effective, drainage system
similar to a roof whereby rain water is directed away from the
centre to drainage channels on each side.

However, in the event of really heavy rain, the onsite gravel trucks
appear within 5 minutes ready to restore the range surface.

IPSC Laos held their first Level III competition in

October 2016, and it was an amazing event. They
were so concerned about efficiency that there were
75 Range Officers for only 80 competitors!

If you’re interested in having an entirely new Asian

experience, and shooting a fun competition at a
magnificent shooting range, keep an eye on the IPSC
Match Calendar for the next event in 2017.

YOUNG GUNS

Matthew Morrison
AGE: 16
REGION: Paraguay

How did you first hear about IPSC?

After I finished a basic pistol shooting class, my instructor
suggested I participate in the club social competition held every
month. That first competition really got me hooked on the sport.

For how long have you been shooting?

Almost 4 years now.

What division do you shoot and why?

Production. I started with a Glock17 and one year later changed
to a CZ SP-01 Shadow, which I love. Very few people here in
Paraguay shoot divisions other than Production.

What is the coolest about IPSC shooting?

I think it is always a personal challenge to keep improving. I
feel I am always shooting against myself and my own ability.
Another very cool thing is meeting people from other countries
who are all crazy about the sport. When I was at the 2014 IPSC

22
Handgun World Shoot in Florida, I got to know people from
Slovenia, Germany, USA and Australia, in addition to my
friends from South America.

What inspired you to begin shooting?

I was always interested in shooting guns. After watching
Top Shot on TV, I bugged my dad to get started and that
changed my idea of my favorite sporting activity.

What do your friends and family think about you shooting IPSC?
My family is very supportive, especially my mom (and dad
who travels and competes with me). My friends think IPSC
shooting is an extreme and crazy activity. Most people
don’t understand the safety aspects of the sport. I often
have to explain how it works, and then they become more
understanding and interested.

What are the biggest challenges you have when shooting IPSC?
To never stop improving my skills. I research a lot and
always look for better ways to train. Dad and I are gradually
turning our house into a dry fire training zone with little
target images all over the wall.

What other sports or activities do you enjoy besides IPSC shooting?

I used to be very keen on basketball and skateboarding, as
well as soccer with my classmates. This summer I would
like to learn hang gliding, but shooting has become my
main passion.

HOT SHOTS

GUGA
RIBAS
REGION: BRASIL
How many years have you been shooting?
When I still was a race car driver, my brother was one of the pioneers of IPSC in
Brazil, so I thought that IPSC might be a great sport for me. I was a race driver all
my life, I won the world championship of Kart in 1986 but, after so many years, I
was looking for a new sport, especially a challenging one, so I decided to become
active in IPSC.

My first important competition was the Handgun World Shoot in Brasilia in 1996.

What do you like best about IPSC shooting?

I love sports, especially those that challenge me. IPSC is one of the most exciting
and remarkable sports.

What Division(s) do you shoot and why?

Now I’m shooting the Open division, because it’s the Formula 1 of the IPSC, and
that challenge means a lot to me.

26
What advice do you have for up and coming shooters?
I have a list of best practices that I have learned over
the years:
1- Always follow the safety rules.
2- Train as much as you can.
3- Study the fundamentals, and watch the great
shooters, but develop your own style.
4- Remember that the small details make the greatest
difference.
5- Find a great coach.

What is your match pistol and ammo?

I have a sponsorship contract with SPS for this year and I will
use the SPS Vista.

What do your friends and family think about you shooting IPSC?
My family is really supportive about everything I do. My
son works with me in my Guga Ribas Company, where we
make products for IPSC and other sports. He is often with
me in competitions around the world, and my wife is often
travelling with me too.
I also have two daughters and they frequently join me at the
shooting range. All my family and friends understand that
I’m a athlete and have my obligations.

Are you active in any other sport?

Automobile sports, of course, but I also go jogging, play
volleyball with my friends, and I love to ski. Right now I’m
training to participate in a marathon.

27
SENIOR SHOOTIZENS

HERIBERT BETTERMANN
REGION: Germany
AGE: 60

When and where did you first discover IPSC shooting?

Around 1978 I stumbled across IPSC shooting when I worked
as a car and motorcycle salesman, and one of my customers
was an active IPSC shooter. One day he told me about it, and
showed me some pictures. Later he took me along on my first
trip to a shooting range. Well, what more could I say? I was
instantly hooked. In the following year I shot my first match in
Bergheim (near Cologne).

Which divisions do you shoot, and why?

Basically I shoot all divisions nowadays except Revolver. This
is mainly due to the fact that I trust my Sig Sauer P226 X-Five
model when switching between Standard, Production and
Open Division. And when I compete in the Classic Division
once in a while, I benefit from my hundreds of thousands
of rounds I have fired with 1911-style guns in the past.
Predominantly, I stick with Production Division because I
like the spirit of this division, namely racing with nearly stock
guns.

28
“Before taking up IPSC Shooting, I was heavily involved in Motocross
which was very dangerous. Since I hung up my helmet and boots, I’ve
never been in a hospital again. IPSC is a much safer sport! “
Which make and model firearm do you use?
Since 2001, I´ve been sponsored by Sig Sauer so I shoot
their pistols exclusively. In the beginning I used a good old
P226, but later on I switched to the X-Five where I also was
part of the development team.

What do your friends and family think about you shooting IPSC?
Let me answer that question the other way around. Before
taking up IPSC Shooting, I was heavily involved in Motocross
which was very dangerous. Since I hung up my helmet and
boots, I’ve never been in a hospital again. IPSC is a much
safer sport!

Do you have any tips for the Young Guns?

A beginner should first and foremost decide on the effort
that he wants to pursue in IPSC shooting and choose the
appropriate division wisely. Whether it’s a casual pastime,
or the main focus of your sporting life, only time will tell.

REGION: Australia
Who and/or what inspired you to begin IPSC shooting?
I had been shooting Field Pistol at an indoor range
in Perth, Australia for 6 months before I found IPSC.
Whilst I enjoyed improving my accuracy, I was looking
for something a little more challenging. I found my local
IPSC club and have never looked back. I was lucky to
meet a few people who helped me tremendously with
my initial training and introducing me to the competition
scene.

How long have you been shooting?

I have been shooting IPSC for 8 years.

Which division do you shoot, and why?

I shoot Standard Division. I started in Standard, Minor.
With the addition of .357Sig as a trial caliber for Major
Power Factor in Standard, I converted and have shot that
since 2008. I dabbled in Open division for a while, but

IROA BRIEFING

READY TO SERVE!

DINO EVANGELINOS WE CAN HARDLY WAIT

IROA PRESIDENT
As usual, our annual points reporting was successfully
completed at the end of January.

I’m delighted to note that our cadre of Match Officials is now

comprised of 39 Range Masters, 95 Chief Range Officers,
424 Range Officers, and 52 Provisional Range Officers.

Our ranks continue to swell as more and more National

Range Officers are seeking international recognition and
accreditation. It’s certainly not easy becoming part of The
Best of the Best team, yet this has never dissuaded local
officials from embarking upon the long, but rewarding
journey to Excellence in Officiating.

This year, IROA Officials will support two World

Championships: the inaugural Rifle World Shoot in Russia
in May, followed by the Handgun World Shoot in France in
August.

36
This is why Range Officers always have a sense of empathy
when supervising competitors.

Nothing is more heart-breaking for a Range Officer than

being obliged to issue procedural penalties, or worse still,
a match disqualification. However, safety always comes
first, and that is closely followed by competitive equity.

However, Range Officers are always grateful when

competitors accept the outcome in a true spirit of good
sportsmanship.

This partnership is what separates IPSC from many other

sports.

Selected officials have been duly notified, and I have no See you on the range.
doubt that they will ensure that competitors are processed
safely, but in good cheer and in high spirits.

At the end of the day, all of us are shooters, so even though

some of us are required to officiate, we understand the
competitive pressures, the joy of a successful run, and
the heartache that follows a less than stellar performance
on a stage.

BEST OF THE BEST

BERND
MARKA
REGION: GERMANY

How many years have you been officiating?

For 14 years with IROA, and for 20 years as an NROI
official. Everything started for me in 1994 when I became
a handgun Range Officer with the German NROI. After I
fulfilled all requirements for IROA in 2000, I was accepted
as a handgun Range Officer. Later, I was accredited
for shotgun and rifle in the German NROI level, and for
shotgun with IROA.

What do you like best about officiating?

Being together with people of the same interest and to
help make the sport happen. Sharing my experience with
ROs and competitors establishes borderless friendships
around the world, not limited by region, country, race,
culture etc. The experience of working, living and having
fun with IROA and NROI people gives me special joy in
my life. Having some extra time to explore the landscape,
culture, food and beverage of countries I’m visiting is a
special benefit of this kind of working fun.

What was your most memorable match? Why? In addition to a timer, what other equipment do you use?

What advice do you have for aspiring officials?
There’s always an ongoing and never ending learning

even when we’re called “Best of the Best”, there’s still
some room for improvement. Know the latest rules and
interpretations. Be fair and respectful to all competitors

that some competitors might be stressed, so behave in

ACTION SHOOTING

Action Air
World Shoot I
Action Air competitors around the world were absolutely
thrilled to learn that the inaugural IPSC Action Air World Shoot
has been transferred to Hong Kong, unquestionably the world
headquarters of this exciting aspect of IPSC shooting.
Hong Kong has a seemingly endless assortment of
retailers selling everything that an Action Air competitor
could possibly want to buy, and of course the prices are
unbeatable.

The competition will kick-off with an Opening Ceremony,

resplendent with a Lion Dance, on 29 June 2018.

The match proper will take place over the three days of
30 June to 2 July 2018 at two massive, adjoining indoor
arenas of the Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition
Centre (KITEC).

The Awards Dinner, a delectable Chinese banquet, will be

held on 3 July 2018.

It is expected that the match will achieve full capacity of

600 competitors, and competitors and Match Officials are
expected from many of IPSC’s 102 member countries.

There will be 30 Courses of Fire, shot at a rate of 10 stages

per day, with each stage testing different shooting skills.

Match Officials from IROA will conduct the competition and

an important competition, so we are going the extra mile
to ensure that all participants enjoy the event and their
visit to Hong Kong”.

It is expected that the match

will achieve full capacity of 600
competitors, and competitors
and Match Officials are expected
from many of IPSC’s 102 member

There will also be a large number of local and international

that aficionados will not need to go downtown.

The official match website, containing all relevant

information, will be launched towards the end of June
2017.
