Lots of money, lots of luck, and players who didn’t care about winning ugly, just so long
as they won, turned Chelsea into the champions of Europe. The money, of course, is Roman
Abramovich’s. The billionaire finally got his hands on the shiny trophy with big ears he so
coveted.
Striker Didier Drogba, scorer of the late goal that kept Chealsea in the game in normal
time and of the penalty that won it after extra time ended with a 1-1 draw, running across
the pitch with the Champions League trophy in his arms and delight on his face. Tens of
thousands of Bayern Munich fans, forming a wall of red and white, silenced and shell-
shocked in their own magnificent stadium.
There were times in the Champions League final when Abramovich may have wished
that he had bought another super-yacht, instead. At least it would have been prettier than
a lot of the football played by his expensive team, but there’s no law against playing ugly
football. Chealsea didn’t travel to Munich to dazzle as Barcelona and Real Madrid surely
would have done had those Spanish clubs not foundered in the semifinals.
Chealsea didn’t even come here to play attacking football – as Bayern did in wave upon
fruitless wave on Saturday night, with Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben double-teaming like
Batman and Robin, but without the knockout punch.

Nias island is known as a popular surfing destination and home of the traditional
hombo batu stone jumping. But, there is more to discover on the island off Sumatra’s west
coast. Nias’s popularity as a surfing spot is contributed to two men, Dick Hole and Jack
McCoy, who took the surfing world by storm with their video Riders in the Storm, which
was shot on the island and a number of other places in Indonesia.
The island was soon labeled “The Best Right Hand”, “The Most Notorious Right Hand
Reef Break in the World” and home of one of “The Best 10 Waves in the World” by surfing
magazines. It is currently part of a chain of international surfing competition alongside Bali’s
Uluwatu and East Java’s Grajagan on the Plengkung coast.
Nias is also famous for its stone jumping ritual - where young men jump over 2 meter
stone walls in the village of Bawomatoluo, a traditional 200 year old hill town featuring
south Nias architecture and megalithic stones. The ritual was a way for the village chief to
recruit village fighters who were trusted to enforce traditional law and also fight invading
enemies. But, if coming all the way to Nias, known as Taho Niha or the land of the people
by locals, tourists should not limit themselves only to stone jumping and surfing.
The island is home to unique traditional architecture as well as a civilization that dates
back to the Dongson period of North Vietnam. It is known for its megalithic culture. The
origins of the Nias people are uncertain. But, the elders of the island are convinced that one
place, Gomo in Central Nias, is at the roots of their ancestry. From this place, famous for its
megalithic stones, the basic lines of Nias traditional architecture spread.

position and the existence of surrounding advantageouus hinterlands, port of Tanjung Perak
constitutes the center of inter island shipping for Eastern Indonesia. Previously the
oceangoing vessels did loading and unloading activities at Madura Strait and then freighted
the cargoes by the means of barges and boats to Jembatan Merah (the first port in that

Because of the increases of trade, cargo and transportation traffics, the facilities
available at Port were inadequate. Therefore in 1875 Ir. W. de Jonght planned to build Port
of Tanjung Perak so that the loading and unloading activities could be carried out directly
without using barges and boats. Yet this plan was rejected since it needed a lot of funds.

The 1950s and 1960s were “survival years” in the words of the Indonesian Railway’s
official historian. The railway required subsidies to keep operations, many lines could not
be run at a profit, obtaining sufficient spare parts for locomotives was a major problem and
condition of the trackage was deplorable.
But those years were not totally wasted. Dieselisation came in 1953, in the form of
27 unit C-2-C locomotives from the United States, and between 1957-1967, around 250
diesel locomotives went into service, displacing steam from most main line and long
distance passenger trains. New passenger stock were also introduced in the same period,
although these were limited for main line trains, and older equipment remained in use for
the lesser trains. New vacuum brake-equipped freight wagons were also obtained, for the
overnight fast freight service between Jakarta and Surabaya.
In 1963, all public railways in Indonesia were unified under a new administration,
Perusahaan Negara Kereta Api. Previously, the Deli system in North Sumatra was separately
administered after its nationalization in 1958. Further administrational changes occured in
1973, when the PNKA was renamed PJKA (Perusahaan Jawatan Kereta Api).

This Text is for Questions 41 – 46.

Quite different from storm surges are the giant sea waves called tsunamis, which
deriv their name from tha Japanese expression for “high water in a harbor”. These waves
are also referred to by the general public as tidal waves, although they have relatively litttle
to do with tides. Scientists often undersea seismic sea waves, far more appropriate in that
they do result from undersea seismic activity.
Tsunamis are caused when the sea bottom suddenly moves, during an underwater
earthquake or volcano, for example, and the water above the moving earth is suddenly
displaced. This sudden shift or water sets off a series of waves. These waves can travel great
distances at speed close to 700 kilometers per hour. In the open ocean, tsunamis have little
noticeable amplitude, often no more than one or two meters. It is when they hit the shallow
waters near the coast that they increase in height, possibly up to 40 meters.
Tsunamis often occur in the Pasific because the Pasific is an area of heavy seismic
activity. Two areas of the Pasific well accustomed to the threat of tsunamis are Japan and
Hawaii. Because the seismic activity that causes tsunamis in Japan often occurs on the ocean
bottom quite close to the islands, the tsunamis that hit Japan often come with little warning
and can therefore prove disastrous. Most of the tsunamis that hit the Hawaiian Islands,
however, originate thousands of miles away near the coast of Alaska, so these tsunamis
have a much greater distance to travel and the inhabitants of Hawaii generally have time
for warning of their imminent arrival.
Tsunamis are certainly not limited to Japan and Hawaii. In 1755, Europe
experienced a calamitous tsunami, when movement along the fault lines near the Azores
caused a massive tsunami to sweep onto the Portuguese coast and flood the heavily
populated area around Lisbon. The greatest tsunami on record occured on the other of the
world in 1883 when the Krakatoa volcano underwent a massive explosion, sending waves
more than 30 meters high onto nearby Indonesian islands; the tsunami from this volcano
actually traveled around the world and was withnessed as far away as the English Channel.
