Global Distribution System

A global distribution system (GDS) is a network operated by a company that enables

automated transactions between Vendors and booking agents in order to provision
travel related services to the end consumers. A GDS can link services, rates and
bookings consolidating products and services across all three travel sectors: i.e., airline
reservations, hotel reservations, car rentals, and activities.

GDS is different from a computer reservations system which is a reservation system

used by the respective vendors. Primary customers of GDS are travel agents (both online
and office based) to make reservation on various reservations systems run by the
vendors. GDS holds no inventory, the inventory is held on vendors reservation system
itself.
A GDS system[1] will have real-time link to the vendors database. For example, when a
travel agency requests a reservation on the service of a particular airline, the GDS
system routes the request to the appropriate airline computer reservations system. This
enables a travel agent with a connection to a single GDS to choose and book various
flights, hotels, activities and associated services on all the vendors in the world who are
part of that GDS.

Airline reservations systems contain airline schedules, fare tariffs, passenger

reservations and ticket records. An airline's direct distribution works within their own
reservation system, as well as pushing out information to the GDS. A second type of
direct distribution channel are consumers who use the internet or mobile applications to
make their own reservations. Travel agencies and other indirect distribution channels
access the same GDS as those accessed by the airlines' reservation systems, and all
messaging is transmitted by a standardized messaging system that functions on two
types of messaging that transmit on SITA's HLN [high level network].
These message types are called Type A [usually EDIFACT format] for real time
interactive communication and Type B [TTY] for informational and booking type of
messages. Message construction standards set by IATA and ICAO, are global, and apply
to more than air transportation. Since airline reservation systems are business critical
applications, and their functionally quite complex, the operation of an in-house airline
reservation system is relatively expensive.

Prior to deregulation, airlines owned their own reservation systems with travel agents
subscribing to them. Today, the GDS are run by independent companies with airlines
and travel agencies as major subscribers.

As of February 2009, there are only three major GDS providers in the market space:
Amadeus, Travelport (the merged Apollo, Worldspan and Galileo systems), Sabre and
Shares. There is one major Regional GDS, Abacus, serving the Asian marketplace and a
number of regional players serving single countries, including Travelsky (China), Infini
and Axess (both Japan) and Topas (South Korea).

Apollo is one of the major Global Distribution Systems (GDS) (or CRS) used in North America by airlines,
travel agencies, Internet booking sources and other travel companies for sales, accounting, inventory
managment and communications. Apollo is owned by Travelport and is sometimes referred to as
"Galileo," another GDS system with whom it shares some functionality. This guide is designed to be used
with the VIASINC Apollo Introduction, Comprehensive and Conversion Courses or as a reference when
working in the travel industry. All of the formats in the guide are taught in the VIASINC Apollo courses,
though formats grouped together may not be taught in the same lesson or course. The Format Recap at
the end of each online lesson (or workbook lesson) should be your resource for determining which
entries are taught in each lesson. You will not be expected to know formats listed in this guide that are
not taught in your course. Course outlines appear in an Appendix. Using formats to operate Apollo is
called using the "command line interface." There are point-and-click interfaces to the command line, but
using formats to operate Apollo is the fastest and most efficient way to look up information and process
reservations. It is Apollo's "expert" mode and a good working knowledge of the commands is an
important part of your travel education that will help you considerably when using Apollo in the field.

Primary airports[edit]
Airports in the United States that provide scheduled passenger services and have over 10,000
passenger boardings per year are classified as primary airports by the Federal Aviation
Administration.
This list of primary airports contains the following information:
 CITY – The city generally associated with the airport. This is not always the actual location
since some airports are located in smaller towns outside of the city they serve.
 FAA – The location identifier assigned by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These
are linked to that airport's page in the state's airport directory, where available.
 IATA – The airport code assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Those that do not match the FAA code are shown in bold.
 ICAO – The location indicator assigned by the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO).
 AIRPORT – The official airport name.
 ROLE – One of four FAA airport categories. This list only includes airports designated
as Commercial service – primary(P). Each primary airport is further classified by the FAA as one
of the following four "hub" types:
 L: Large hub that accounts for at least 1% of total U.S. passenger enplanements.
 M: Medium hub that accounts for between 0.25% and 1% of total U.S. passenger
enplanements.
 S: Small hub that accounts for between 0.05% and 0.25% of total U.S. passenger
enplanements.
 N: Nonhub that accounts for less than 0.05% of total U.S. passenger enplanements,
but more than 10,000 annual enplanements
 ENPL. – The number of enplanements (commercial passenger boardings) that occurred at
the airport in calendar year2013 as per FAA records.
