1
What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned on how to analyze the characters used
in print, non-print and digital materials through their age and gender, race and nationality,
attitude and behavior. This time, you will be learning about the tenses of the verbs.
Directions: Choose the correct answer from the word pool.

characters nationality gender attitude age

______1. This refers to the sexes either male or female.

______2. It is the length of time that person has lived or a thing existed.
______3. It refers to the status of belonging to a particular nation.
______4. It is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something,
typically, one that is reflected in person’s behavior.
______5. This refers to the people involved in the story.

What’s New

When we talk about using the English language, we should make sure that the
tenses of the verbs are used correctly. We use present tense of the verb when we refer
to present condition or general truth. We also use the past tense if we talk of events that
had already happened. In the same manner, future tense is also used if we talk about
plans and future events.

Activity 1. Directions: Write the correct form of the verb in the following sentences.
1. The class advisers (check) __________ the learners’ attendance every day.
2. Mayor Vicente Eusebio (build) __________ a new four-storey building in our school.
3. Regine (jump) ___________with joy when she received an award last month.
4. I’m sure she (try) __________ harder next year to maintain her honor or even excel.
5. The teachers (report) ___________to school next month.

What is It

For sentence 1, what is the subject? What is the given verb?

In what form of the verb is check, singular or plural? Why? When does the action check
happen? So, the word every day is the time marker that the action happens in the
present.
Since the subject class advisers is in plural form, therefore, the verb that follows is also
in the plural form. The verb in the plural form does not end with –s or -es. It should be in

2
the base form of the verb. The sentence that has a time marker, uses the present tense
of the verb.
For sentence 2, what is the subject? What is the verb used?
In what form of the verb is build, singular or plural? Why? What does the sentence
express?
Since the subject Mayor Vicente Eusebio is in singular form, therefore, the verb that
follows is also in singular form. The verb in the singular form ends with –s or -es. The
sentence expresses general truth, therefore, the verb is in the present tense.
For sentence 3, what is the subject? What is the verb used? When did the action
happen?
Since, the sentence has a time marker that happened in the past time, therefore, the
verb to be used is in past tense regardless of the subject. The past tense of the verb is
formed by adding d or ed to the present form of the verb except to the irregular verbs.

For sentence 4, what is the subject? What is the verb? When will the action happen?
Next year is the time marker or time expression used in the sentence to show futurity.
Future tense is usually shown by using shall or will with the present form of the verb
regardless of the subject form.
For sentence 5, what is the subject? What verb is used? When will the action happen?
Next month is the time marker or time expression used in the sentence to show futurity.
Future tense is usually shown by using shall or will with the present form of the verb
regardless of the subject form.

What’s More

Activity 2. A. Directions: Read the paragraph. Fill in the blank with the correct present
form of the verb in the parenthesis. The first one is done for you.
Pedro has a horse. He (live) 1. lives on a farm in the province of Lanao del Norte.
His horse’s name is Gardan. He (ride) 2. _______every day. Sometimes, they (walk) 3.
_______slowly, and sometimes they (run) 4. _______ fast. He (enjoy) 5. _______ their
time together.
B. Directions: Change the underlined verbs to past tense.

Answer: Many voters listened attentively to the lecture.
1. They provide us pamphlets about the seminar.
2. The resource persons talk about the effects of pollution on the health of children.
3. The workers complete the construction of the gymnasium.
4. The performers act well on stage.
5. The netizens comment on the negative issue.

3. The government said that the economy (improve) ________ with the implementation
of the increase in VAT.
4. The Department of Education (offer) ______ free printed modules.
5. The police (conduct) ________ an investigation about the robbery in the bank.

What I Have Learned

There are three simple tenses of verbs. These are present tense, past tense
and future tense.
Present Tense states an action or condition in the present time. It expresses
general truths, habitual action or a permanent condition. Adverbs of frequency are
common time markers in the present tense. They tell how often an action is
repeated. The words below are used as time markers in simple present tense such
as always, seldom, sometimes usually, rarely, never, often, hardly ever, and
occasionally

Past Tense states an action or condition in the past time. This past tense is usually
formed by adding d, ed or /t/ to the present form of the verb. Common time markers
used are yesterday, ago, and last.

Future tense states an action that is about to happen. This is usually shown by
using shall or will with the present form of the verb. Future time may also be shown
by the use of the form of be with going to or about to. Time expressions used to
show futurity are tomorrow, next year, later, soon, two days after, or in a little while.

What I Can Do

Directions: Complete the sentences in the paragraph by writing the correct form of the
verbs. The first one is done for you.

occasion/)

Today is a special day for Talia. She is getting

ready for a dinner celebration. She wants to look very
nice for her night out.
First, she gets her hair cut at a salon. A salon is
a place where people go to get their hair and nails
done. Then, she gets her fingernails painted pink. A
woman who works at the salon paints Talia’s nails.
Talia is not happy with the color. She asks the woman
to change the color to purple. She likes the purple very much. It is almost time to go out.

Talia goes home and looks in her closet. She tries on a pair of light blue pants
with a white shirt. She tries on a purple dress with a black belt. She tries on a brown skirt
with a green top. She wears the purple dress.
Many of her friends and family are at the restaurant when she gets there. She
hugs her mother and father. She gives her grandfather a kiss. Talia’s sister gives her a

Unforgettable Vacation
By: Analiza L. Palacio
Summer vacation was fast approaching at that time, and some students wanted
to go out of town. Leah’s parents had a different plan. They planned for a week-long
trip to Dumaguete.
Leah hated to ride on a boat and asked if
she could just stay at her best friend’s house
where she could play with her friends. But her
parents didn’t want her to stay and hear any
complaints. She kept on explaining to them
about what she wanted to do but their decision
was already fixed. Family time is important to
them.

will only make your vacation dull if you won’t
stop complaining,” said father. But Leah couldn’t
help thinking about how their vacation will turn
out.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Leah was surprised to see how
big the ship was! She saw the clear sea water and witnessed how the ship stayed afloat.
She then remembered one of her teachers once told her, “It is exciting to board a ship!
At last they’re on the ship! She walked around and checked everything inside.
She couldn’t believe how luxurious their accommodation was. Their bedroom was
excessively beautiful! Then she went to the entertainment room to see what was inside.
It was a magical show!
Leah was so amazed how the magician performed. It was incredible! She asked
her parents if she could try to be inside the bubble and her parents said, “Of course!”
Leah was very excited. When it was her turn, she got so nervous! She stood at the
center and waited for the magician to do some tricks. The bubble show went on. Other
kids came too to watch the show. Leah met new friends before their week-long trip has
ended. She promised to keep in touch with them. She will be forever grateful for the
happy memories they had shared.
While on their way home, Leah apologized to her parents about her reactions
before. “This is the best vacation ever!”, she exclaimed. She looked forward for more
vacations with her family soon.

10. It was Maria’s birthday. As a surprise gift, our family went on a whole-day trip to
Iligan City. Maria was so excited. She told us many things along the way which she
thought would make everyone happy. Carla wanted to see Maria Cristina Falls first,
didn’t she?”
“Kuya Edgar prefers going to Timoga Spring Pool, doesn’t he?”
“Now, where shall we go first?” she inquired. Father smiled and said, “Just relax”.
We all want to see the breathtaking beauty of Maria Cristina Falls first, don’t we? We
don’t want to miss the chance of seeing also the refreshing and shivering water of the
Timoga Spring Pool. Surely, we will enjoy going around the city until midnight.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned about relating experiences appropriate
to an occasion.

Directions: Write a five- sentence paragraph about your first day in school. Write it in
your notebook.

16
What’s New

Examine yourself. Can you now read with accuracy and understanding? If yes,
then you are a Fluent Reader! To become a Fluent Reader, you must Practice
Reading the same list of words, phrase, or short passages/stories several times. Pause
between sentences and phrases.
 Start to practice reading with accuracy.
In reading with accuracy, follow the standards carefully:
1. Pronounce your words clearly.
2. Do not add “s’ to words where there should not be any.
3. Do not drop the “s” from words where there should be one.
4. Do not rush through the passage. Read clearly and calmly.
5. If you tip over a word, just read it again. Stay calm.
6. For words you cannot pronounce, settle on one pronunciation and stick to it.
7. Do not point at the words with your finger as you read. Word by word reading kills the
meaning sense from the text.
8. If you need to keep track of what you read, place your finger at the edge of the paper
and move it down the page.

Directions: Practice reading aloud three times these selections and dialogue observing
the standards above. In the fourth time, ask assistance from your family to record the
number of miscues or words that you were not able to read correctly following the
percentage of accuracy below the paragraph. Write your reading description in your

notebook.
1. Computers are one of the most incredible inventions of this century, and they
have completely altered our daily lives. They help us solve problems in faster and more
efficient ways than ever thought possible. For instance, without computers, there would
be no space exploration. Scientists use computers to control instruments, analyze data,
and help them conduct research. In medicine, doctors use computers to help analyze
test results and diagnose illness. As a result, computers help doctors save thousands of
lives. For some people, learning computers can be confusing. In education, computers
are used to teach students foreign languages, mathematics, science and many other
subjects. Students are tutored and drilled when they work on the computer. The
computer can even carry on a dialogue with the students.

2. Communication on the Go

17
What do beepers, pagers, and cellphones have in common? How do these
gadgets carry and receive messages? What makes transmitting messages easier with
these gadgets?
Cellular phones, beepers, and pagers use radio signals to carry messages. The
service area for cellphones and pagers is divided into groups called cells. Each cell has
a radio transmitter. Signals are sent to the cell where the person using the pager or the
cellphone. Then, the transmitter sends message from one cell to another cell. This
process happens very quickly. When you call a friend from a cellphone, the signal goes
through many connections before it reaches your friend.
Artificial satellites send signals to the cell. These artificial satellites are carried by
rockets into space. They circle high above the earth. Solar panels on the satellites
collect sunlight to make electricity. They use electricity to send radio waves back to the
receiving station. The receiving stations are often thousands of miles away from the
transmitting station.
Today, hundreds of satellites whirl around the earth. Each one makes life easier
for all of us. Each one makes communication possible. Each one helps find ways to
reach even those who we think are beyond our reach.

What I Have Learned

Accuracy refers to reading words without mistakes. To improve your

accuracy, listen to yourself, read a passage and evaluate it. It is difficult to improve upon
something if you don't recognize what you are doing wrong. Then, you must Practice
Reading the same list of words, phrase, or short passages/stories several times. Pause
between sentences and phrases. Observe standards in reading.

What I Can Do

Directions: Read the story, “A Lesson in the Farm” and practice reading it twice
specially the highlighted words until all the words will be read correctly. Then ask an
assistance to write the miscues and your reading description in your notebook.

A Lesson in the Farm

One day, the Science class of Mrs. Ferrer had a trip to the farm to observe
different living things in the river, in the meadows and in the rice field. They were
grouped into three and assigned to particular areas to be observed.
The members of each group helped one another in identifying living things in
their assigned area. They were surprised to see ants that stop when they meet their
way while storing food in their colony. They seemed talking with each other and then

continued moving on their way. Also they looked and smiled at one another. They are
like people who greet each other when they meet at the street, “said Luis.
“And the best thing in them is that they helped one another in storing their food
for the rainy days, “informed Mrs. Ferrer.
“Like us, Ma’am. We also helped one another to make our work easier and
lighter,” replied the children.

Reading Grade Level Text
4 With 135 Words Per Minute

Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Fluency
is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
Fluent reading is not necessarily fast reading. Reading should move along at an appropriate
What
rate of speed reflecting I Need
the mood and to Knowof the text. Fluent reading rates differ for
expression
each grade level. As a sixth grader, your fluency standard is to read a grade level text at a
rate of approximately 120-150 words per minute with an accuracy rate of 95-100%.
However, your ultimate purpose is to read well, so always do your best reading, not your
fastest reading even though you are reading under time pressure.
The objectives of this lesson are:
1. Read grade level text with 135 words per minute with proper phrasing, intonation,
and expression;
2. Gain speed and accuracy in reading; and
3. Show openness to criticism.

be bought there. She likes to eat watermelon and mangoes, but she doesn’t like grapes.
Now the girl is in her bedroom. It’s quite big. There are two windows inside her room.
A wardrobe can be seen there too. Her desk is placed next to the window with a chair beside

What is It

Fluency means being able to read a text quickly, accurately, and with expression. A
fluent reader is better able to understand the text. Rereading and reading aloud is a good
strategy for becoming a more fluent reader.
Reading fluency is calculated by taking the total number of words read in one minute
and subtracting the number of errors. Only count one error per word. This gives you the
words correct per minute ( wpm ). The words correct per minute represents students’ fluency
levels.
To practice reading fluently, you have to do the following:
 Set a timer for one minute.
 Read the passage as quickly and accurately as possible.
 Mark the last word read when the timer goes off.
 Record the words per minute read.

Oral Reading Fluency Practice

Directions: Read aloud the text below. Use a timer and set it for one minute. Then, jot
down the number of words you read when the timer goes off. Do not count the words that
you read incorrectly. Read the text a second and third time until you can read comfortably.
FOR VALIDATION

Record in the chart the number of words you read to track your progress.

In the old city of Florence, a little girl was born to a loving couple. They named their
little daughter, Florence. As a young child, Florence was helpful and compassionate. She
loved the dumb animals around her. Once, a dog broke its leg, so its master thought of
giving it away. Florence stopped the master and offered to nurse the poor animal back to
health. She helped a doctor put a bandage to the dog’s leg, and soon it could run proud on
all fours again. How the little dog loved to be with Florence since then!

Florence could have chosen to live a comfortable life as she was the child of wealthy
parents. But she did not. She left home and took training as a nurse. She kept herself busy
in the hospitals. She was thirty-four years old when she asked permission to work as a nurse
in the English army. She then left for Crimea where the English helped the people of Turkey
fight the Russians.

What’s More

Directions: Work with a partner. Read the text aloud to your partner and let him/her note
down the words that you have difficulty and hesitations with. Let him/her comment on how
fast and accurate you read as well as the correctness of your expression. Be open to your
partner’s suggestions for improvement. Then, practice on these words. Finally, read the
words aloud together.

I haven’t been to Bali, Indonesia, but I have read about it. I have been to Boracay
Island, that’s why I know these two awesome tourist destinations are similar in many ways.
Both are small islands that have fine beaches, hillside terraces, and cool green hills. Bali and
Boracay boost of international cuisines because people all over the world visit them.
However, Bali’s beaches are golden while those of Boracay are white and the sand is fine as
powder. A village in Bali is famous for its gold and silver work. There is none of this in
Boracay. There is a cultural center in Bali called Ubud. On the other hand, there are only
shops where you can buy goods that are very Filipino in Boracay

Rocks
A rock is made of two or more minerals. Rocks are named by how they are formed.
There are three types of rocks. Igneous rocks are formed when volcanoes erupt and magma
flows to the earth’s surface. New rocks can also be made from weathering and erosion.
Rain, wind, and running water cause rocks to break down a little bit at a time. These rock
pieces fall to the bottom of the lakes or oceans they run into. Over time the layers of sand
and mud at the bottom of lakes and oceans turn into sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks
are rocks that have been changed because of heat and pressure.
Rocks are constantly changing because after they form, they wear down and they
form again. This process is called the rock cycle. Rocks can be weathered by wind, water,
and ice.

Mount Rushmore
Every year, about two million people visit Mount Rushmore, where the faces of four
U.S. presidents were carved in granite by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son, the late
Lincoln Borglum. The creation of Mount Rushmore monument took 14 years – from 1927 to
1941- and nearly a million dollars. These were times when money was difficult to come by
and many people were jobless. To move the more than 400,000 tons of rocks, Borglum hired
laid-off workers from the closed down mines in the Black Hills area. He taught these men to

dynamite, drill, carve, and finish the granite as they were hanging in midair in his specially
devised chairs, which had many safety features. Borglum was proud of the fact that no
workers were killed or severely injured during the years of blasting and carving.
During the carving, many changes in the original design had to be made to keep the
carved heads free of large fissures of granite dust, white lead, and linseed oil to fill them.
Every winter, water from melting snows gets into the fissures and expands as it
freezes, making the fissures bigger. Consequently, every autumn maintenance work is done
to refill the cracks. The repairers swing out in space over a 500-foot drop and fix the
monument with the same mixture that Borglum used to preserve this national monument for
future generations.

Directions: Read the text below. Use a timer and set it for one minute. Stop reading when

reading fluency.
African Elephants
African elephants are the largest land animals on earth. They are slightly larger than
their Asian cousins and can be identified by their larger ears that look somewhat like the
continent of Africa. (Asian elephants have smaller, rounded ears.)
Elephant ears radiate heat to keep these large animals cool, but sometimes the
African heat is too much. Elephants are fond of water and enjoy showering by sucking water

33
into their trunks and spraying it all over themselves. Afterwards, they often spray their skin
with a protective coating of dust.
An elephant’s trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting,
drinking, and also for grabbing things-especially a potential meal. The trunk alone contains
about 100,000 different muscles. African elephants have two finger-like features on the end
of their trunk that they can use to grab small items. (Asian elephants have none.)
