Assignment II

This document contains 5 questions from a hydrology assignment. [1] It asks to explain the roles of latent heat of fusion and vaporization in water movement in the hydrological cycle. [2] It discusses issues with double mass curve analysis of rainfall data, including only using annual data and correlation between successive values affecting statistical tests. [3] It asks to compute average annual precipitation for a basin using the hypsometric method and compare to the arithmetic average. [4] It asks to plot an F-curve from infiltration capacity rates and establish a Horton equation. [5] It asks to establish Horton and cumulative infiltration equations from a double ring infiltrometer test measuring water depth over time.

Assignment II

Question 1:
Explain latent heat of fusion and latent heat of vaporization with in the context of its important
and role in the dynamics water movement in the hydrological cycle.

Question 2:
Comment on the following issues about double mass curve analysis on rainfall of a given stations.

A. The double-mass curve analysis is virtually always applied only to annual precipitation data.
Data for shorter periods are naturally highly variable and tend to mask the kinds of
measurement inconsistencies one is trying to identify.
B. In double mass curve analysis, the usual statistical tests of significance for differences in
slope for regressions are not directly applicable for double-mass curves because the
process of accumulation introduces a high degree of correlation between successive
values. Because of this correlation, the conventional tests will often fail to detect
statistically significant slope changes

Question 3
The tables below give area-elevation data for a drainage basin and the average annual
precipitation measured at six gauges in the basin. The basin has an area of 269 km a minimum
elevation of 311 m, and a maximum elevation of 1,600 m.
A. Compute the average annual precipitation for the basin using the hypsometric method
(Read about this method first, how it works).
B. Compare the value computed in (a) with the arithmetic average.

Question 4

For a given basin, the following are the infiltration capacity rates at various time intervals after
the beginning of the storm. Make a plot of the f-curve and establish an equation of the form
developed by Horton. Also determine the total rain and the excess rain (runoff).

Question 5
In a double ring infiltrometer test, a constant depth of 100 mm was restored at every time
interval the level dropped as given below:

Time (min) 0 5 10 15 25 45 60 75 90 110 130

Depth of water (mm) 100 83 87 90 85 78 85 85 85 80 80

(i) Establish the infiltration equation of the form developed by Horton.

(ii) Obtain the equation for cumulative infiltration of the form (a) F = atn (b) F = atn + b.
