Installing Active Directory And Working On It.

Active directory is a special software on which you can create Domains, Domain Users, Groups, Computers and
control them. You can install Active Directory from Windows Server 2003 server. Using the following steps.

1. Make sure that file system of the hard disk on which you install server
operating system is NTFS.(you can not install Active Directory in
FAT File System).
2. Make sure that Active Directory Is Not Installed In Your Server
In the Administrative Tools.
(StartProgramsAdministrative Tools(If no Active Directory
Installed Go To Step 3>
3. Go to “StartRunthen type dcpromo and then lick OK.
Pic-2 will display ,click Next on Pi-2 ,Pic-3 will display ,
Click Next on Pic-3, Select “Domain Controller for a new domain” and click Next in Pic-4.,

4. Read all the descriptions of the three option buttons in Pic-5(For your further information), select “Domain in a
new forest” then click Next ,Select “No ,Just Install and Configure DNS on this computer” then click Next in
Pic-6,Enter “Full DSN name for new domain” (E.g. students.com,mekelle.com,Sheba.com), then click Next in
Pic-7,

5.Read the information in Pic-8 and then click Next, Click Next in Pic-9,click Next in Pic-10,

6. Read the information in Pic-11 , select “Permissions compatible only with Windows 200 or windows server 2003 Operating
Systems” then click Next, Read the information in Pic-12,Enter “Restore Mode Password” and Confirm Password, then click Next,
Read your Installation Summary and Click Next in Pic-13,

7. When Pic-14 displayed wait until it starts installation progress (Do not Click the Cancel Button),When Pic-15
displays insert the CD which contains the Server Operating System. Then click OK, Automatically the installation
progress will start as shown in Fig-16 .

8. Click Finish in Pic-17 to finish the installation , Click Restart Now in Pic-18 to restart the PC.

Working On Active Directory

Creating Active Directory Users.
To Create Active Directory Users Use The Following Steps.
1. Open ProgramsAdministrative ToolsActive Directory Users and Computers,Pic-20 will be displayed. On
Pic-20 Right Click on Users Then New User, Fill the form in Pic-2 then Click Next, Enter Password And Confirm
Password in Pic-22 than click Next, Click Finish in Pic-23, to finish the user Creation wizard.

Set this options according to your

need, but for now Clear all (Uncheck all)

Do not forget the correct spelling of

this User Logon Name ,because this
name is used for your logon.

Joining (Adding) Client computers to your Domain.
To add client computers to your Domain(Server)use the following steps.
1. Identify the Domain Name of your Server(E.g. Sheba.com,mekelle.com,ethio.com), let you have an
administrator account and the go to the Client computer you want to add.
2. on the client computer Right Click on My ComputerPropertyComputer Name
Your client computer’s full name

Your work group name that shows as your computer is

not part of a Domain Controller

A Change button that enables you to change your

computer name, Work group, and to add your computer to
a Domain.

3. Click on the Change button ,click OK in Pic-25 after you fill the form, enter User name =Administrator
and password= your administrator password of the server (Domain) to which you are adding your client
computer ,then click ok in Pic-26,

You can change your

computers name here, if
necessary.

Click the Domain

Option Button then Enter
the Domain name that
you have created.(E.g.
Sheba,mekelle…) Pic-26

4. If your administrator password is correct and the Domain name you entered is correct Pic-27 will display then
click OK(in Pic-27)OK (Restart prompt) OK(in property sheet)Yes(in Restart Prompt)to restart the
computer and to finish ,else ,Pic-28 will display then try again.

5. When your computer restarts the following screen will display.

If you want to logon to the Domain computer If you want to logon to the client computer
enter the Account name you have created in the OR enter the Account name you have created in the
server(Domain),select the Domain from the client,select ,clientname(Login to this
Logon to then click OK computer)opition from the Logon to then click OK

Congratulations! Now you can control (Manage) your users,groups,computers(Clients) by using

simple setting in the Active Directory Users and Computers Window.

Setting User Restrictions

When we say User restriction ,For example we can set the Users to logon to the Domain(server) on Sunday
2:00 to 4:00 and on Monday from 10:00 to 11:00” ,and also we can give and deny permissions for users to the
computer to which they can logon to .

Example.

User name Logon Hours(Time) Can Logon To the Computer

Sara Mon 2:00 AM- 4:00 AM To all computers
Abebe Mon 4:00 PM- 8:00 PM Comp1,Comp2
Kalekirstos Mon to Sun Finance

To set user restriction’s use the following steps.

1. Open “Active Directory Users an Computers”Usersright click on the user you want to
manageProperty a user property window will display as shown in Pic-30.click the Account tab from pic-30
then pic-31 will display.

2. To set logon hours(Time restriction). Click Logon Hours in Pic-31, to assign computers to which the user can
log on Click Logon To in Pic-31.

We have set the user to logon “ If you want the user to logon to all computers
On San 4:00 AM to Sun 6:00 AM.” select the All Computers option button. else add the
simply by dragging the mouse computers one by one by clicking the add button.

So, As the above setting the User tilahun can logon to the Domain only on Sunday from 4:00 AM to 6:00
AM”and can logon only to the computer “finance”.
