Agree, UST is a catholic institution. It has its own protocol just like other social organizations that cannot
be violated. UST may not support new social because it is against the bible or the word of God, but it will
respect other beings as a person.

The talks on gender and sexuality is almost everywhere in the world today. As Christians who have
faith that God is love, our tolerance on these issues are always loving and welcoming. However, since
this topic is very much related to self-expression and freedom, it always has a great demand to be very
-
clear and specific and not result to hasty generalizations. For instance, the different religious organiza --
tions have already been labeled as close-minded regarding acceptance of people who are members of
LBTQ+. As students of religious education, we are going to clear the clouds of misconception and be
®
assertive on what gender and sexuality really means for the Catholic Church.

Study the Catholic Church teachings on stewardship about gender and sexuality. , '
The Church views sexuality as complementarity of sexes, woman is the complement of man, as man is 0
the complement of woman: man and woman complete each other mutually, not only from a physical
and psychological point of view, but also ontologically. This complementarity states that "Male" and '-._
•. "female" are differentiate two individuals of equal dignity, which does not however reflect a static ..._

difference in equality is enriching and indispensable for the harmony of life in society: "the condition 0

that will assure the rightful presence of woman in the church and in society is a more penetrating and
accurate consideration of the anthropological foundation for masculinity and femininity with the intent
of clarifying woman's personal identity in relation to man, that is, a diversity yet mutual complemen tarity,
not only as it concerns roles to be held and functions to be performed, but also, and more deep-
ly, as it concerns her make-up and meaning as a person.

Therefore when we speak of sexuality, it means: ..._ - :,
1. Complementarity of sexes.
2. Innate bodily desire for the 'other'. • ·
3. Because we are body and soul, this union should surpass of those of animals. In other words 'united

4. Mirror god's love, which has certain characteristics: it is free, total, faithful and fruitful. 111I 1 ' , 1,
The talks on sexuality is indeed plain, in the sense that everyone understand it in its natural order. But j ll lij
when gender does not naturally proceed from its respective sexuality, here comes the issues of gender {
theory. Gender theory denies the difference and reciprocity in nature of a man and a woman and envis-
ages a society without sexual differences, thereby eliminating the anthropological basis of the family.
1 '
This ideology leads to educational programmes and legislative enactments that promote a personal
identity and emotional intimacy radically separated from the biological difference between male and
i r'
female. Consequently, human identity becomes the choice of the individual, one which can also change
over time".

Imagine a society without any sexuality, which is male and female. This inevitably leads to a distorted
. ----
meaning on how nature works and everything that flows from it. For this very reason, gender must ---
proceed from one's sexuality naturally without any distortion socially. The issues on LGBTQ+ regarding
self-expressions and freedom are out of the scope of this module. However, the Church only proposes
the sublimity of the natural order in terms of the relationship of gender and sexuality as to the very
foundation of society, the family.
To understand more, we look on how the Church sees a human person in the talks of gender and sexu
...._
ality. Here is an understanding of Christian Anthropology:
2. One's identity as a human person comes to authentic maturity to the extent that our own mode of
being, whether as male or female, is not simply the result of biological or genetic factors, but of multi ple
elements having to do with temperament, family history, culture, experience, education, human person
becomes himself only with the other. The 'I' becomes itself only from the 'thou' and from the 'you'. A
general understanding so common today is one that of nature versus nurture. It states that sexuality is
given by nature through birth but gender develops because of nurturance, or how is one raised. This
negates the connection of sexuality and gender. Imagine Tarzan, he is by nature a human person but he
was raised as an animal by his gorilla parents. Tarzan ably adapts in animal life and be come one of
them. Although, this example is a work of fiction, it says greatly of human potentiality. Tarzan is limited to
an animal life, thus, unable to reach his full potential and happiness until one day he realizes what is
missing and lacking through the other, in the person of Jane.
3. An anthropological refutation of attempts to negate the male-female duality of human nature, from
which the family is generated. The denial of this duality not only erases the vision of human beings as
the fruit of an act of creation but creates the idea of the human person as a sort of abstraction who
"chooses for himself what his nature is to be. By birth, our sexuality is determined; and from there
springs a natural gender which can be either be male or female. It is hard to even think that one choos
es to be simply a girl, boy, lesbian, gay, etc. Rather one would claim, I am born this way, and didn't
choose to be this way. Therefore, it is clear that naturally it is a fundamental truth that sexuality must
be nurtured in its full potential and not be distorted by odd circumstances. The Church does not reject
people who are members of LGBTQ+, rather she only proposes the importance and dignity of family
whenever distortion of the understanding of sexuality and gender is distorted.
4. (as mentioned above) Seen from this perspective, education on sexuality and affectivity must in volve
each person in a process of learning "with perseverance and consistency, the meaning of his or her
body" in the full original truth of masculinity and femininity. It means "learning to accept our body, to
care for it and to respect its fullest meaning. A person, whether, male, female, gay, lesbian, etc., must
always respect, acknowledge, and care for his or her body. Remember, that this body is a gift from God

Each of us, be it straight males or females, lesbian, gays, etc., are called to practice our sexuality and
gender in chastity. What is chastity? It implies an opposition to the immoral in the sense of lustful or
licentious. It suggests refraining from all acts or thoughts that are not in accordance with the Church's
teaching about the use of one's reproductive powers. Here is the Catechism of the Church on chastity
and homosexuality:
Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or •• -....
predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms
through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely
unexplained. Basing itself on sacred scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave
depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." they are
contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a
genuine affective and sex ual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This --,
inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for must of them a trial. They must be accepted
with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be
avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to
the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner free
dom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can
and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
Therefore, just like young people who are in intimate relationships such as being boyfriends and girl- ::...-:::.:

I learned so much about the definition of sexuality and gender in terms of the Catholic perspective.
First, I will start with complementary sexes. It states that male and female are perfect match for each other because
males are males and females are females, they have different characteristics and roles in the society therefore they

Human beings are social beings and have strong sexual impulses. As human beings, we live every day with
the reality of fallen human nature due to Original Sin. Therefore, anyone can understand why someone gives in to
the impulse of sexual desire when they are in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex. Let’s face it,
practicing chastity is tough. When the ache for affection and intimacy comes, it can draw us into places we never
imagined: mentally, emotionally, and physically.
As a college student, we are starting to become independent. We have more free time for ourselves, our
parents are not there to follow us around. In this case, we have to choose our friends wisely. Make sure the people
around you are those that help you reach your goal and not those who invite you to a party every after school.

word together, and Help each other grow in your relationship with God. If only one of you gives importance to the :-
spiritual condition of your relationship, then it will not be balanced and the boat would sink on the side of the
unbelieving. Make it a goal as a couple to help each other grow in faith especially when one of you is weak. Do not
just remind each other to pray, read the Bible, or go to church but do them together.
Although I definitely agree that it is hard for a couple to not have sex before marriage, I do not believe
foreplay is the answer. Even though it is not going all the way it is still a form of sex. It is also important to keep in
'
mind that this activity is meant to lead to full sex and so stopping can be tough and hurtful for both people. Instead of
engaging in foreplay, there are numerous other pure things a couple can do together to show their love. For
example, going on a picnic and walk in a scenic park. Perhaps cooking dinner together or go to your favorite
restaurant could help the couple as well.
Keeping busy and avoiding temping situations are two great strategies for staying pure. Saving sexual
activity for marriage is also a wonderful way to show one’s commitment to the salvation and good of the other. It
shows that you will have enough self-control to thrive in marriage. Even though it is extremely difficult for a couple to
stay pure for marriage, the wait is worth it. In the long run, it will lead to a happier, healthier marriage directed
towards the wellbeing of the other.
