Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions.

If
Noelle travels 5 mph faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles apart, how
fast in mile per hour is each traveling?
Solution
Let M be Vivian’s speed in mi/hr and (M+5) be Noelle’s speed in mi/hr
Thus, the difference of 136 miles will be due to a sum of their speeds after 8 hrs.
136 = (M+M+5) *8 (work out the brackets)
136 = (2M+5) *8 (multiply by 8)
136 = 16M+40 (subtract 40 from both sides)
16M+40-40 = 136 - 40
16M = 96 (divide through by 16)
M = 6; M+5 = 11
Vivian was travelling at 6 mi/hr and Noelle was travelling at 11 mi/hr.
