HOW TO BECOME A VOICE ACTOR
(5 STEP GUIDE)
Hi! Thanks for downloading this guide.
Working as a voice-over actor can feel like a
dream. You’re paid well to work from home,
reading scripts and working creatively, for clients
all around the world.
But when you’re first getting started, you’re
bound to have (a lot of) questions.
Where do I start?
Is my voice right for voice-over?
Can I earn money with my voice?
This guide outlines a simple 5-step plan for get-
ting started in voice-over, even if you know nothing about working in voice-
over.
Simply put, if I were just starting out in voice-over today, these are the steps
I would follow.
I've included bonus videos to help you learn even more about each step.
I hope this guide helps you reach your goal of becoming a voice-over actor.

STEP 1 - DECIDE IF VOICE-OVER IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Why do you want to be a voice actor?
Maybe you’re thinking...
“Voice-over seems fun”
“I read to my kids every night and want to make a career out of it”
“I’ve been told I have a nice voice”
“I’ve worked in radio for several years and want to move to VO”
These are all great reasons to become interested in voice-over and can lead
to becoming a voice actor.
And voice-over has a lot of great benefits:
- Be your own boss
- Harder you work the more money you’ll earn
- Get to work creatively everyday
- Work from home
- Low startup costs
But you should also know that surprisingly, your voice has little to do with
your success. In order to be successful in voice-over, it takes time. Time to
learn to record quality voice-over, improve your acting ability and market
your business.
If you can't MAKE time for these important activites, becoming a voice actor
isn't for you.

Is voice-over still what I want to do?
If so, you’re ready for Step 2!

STEP 2 - SET-UP YOUR RECORDING SPACE
Having a home studio setup is a must.
Being able to record from home allows you to practice voice-over often (so
you’ll get better), respond to auditions quickly (so you’ll impress clients)
and control the sound of your studio.
Your recording space or studio is where you make your product (voice-over),
which is why it’s one of the most important aspects of your business.
Your space doesn’t need to be soundproof, just quiet.
Some of the most important things you’ll need include:
- A quiet room or closet
- Acoustical room treatment (like foam, pillows, blankets or anything thick)
- Pop filter
- Microphone (doesn’t need to be expensive)
- Audio Interface
- Audio Editing Software

Do you have your space and gear setup or at least
an idea of what you’ll use to record voice-over?

STEP 3 - IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE
When you first start in voice-over you’ll sound terrible, but that’s OK.
The more you practice, the better you’ll become.
This step is where you’ll want to become more educated on voice-over, get
training and ultimately improve your performance.
Hire a voice-over coach or get an evaluation to get up to speed even faster.
Can you still succeed going it alone without a coach? Yes, it just takes more
time.
The goal is to increase your range and improve your acting ability. Narrow in
on the voice-over niche you’re best at.

Before moving on to the next step, ask yourself:
Do I sound as good as other voice actors I’ve heard?
If so, you’re ready for Step 4!

STEP 4 - CREATE YOUR VOICE-OVER DEMO
Once your performance is up to par, you’ll need a voice-over demo.
Your voice-over demo is a way to show potential clients what you're capable
of as a voice actor.
It’s a way for them to get to know your voice and skill level.
You can find a demo producer here. Just make sure you hire one that spe-
cializes in producing demos in the voice-over niche you’re focused on.
Or you can create your own, using this guide here.
Each demo should be no more than 60 seconds long and show examples of
your range.

Before moving on to the next step, ask yourself:
Does my demo represent my voice, range and
quality accurately?
If so, you’re ready for Step 5!

STEP 5 - VOICE-OVER MARKETING
Knowing how to find voice-over jobs is key to succeeding as a voice actor.
You can have the best voice, amazing demo and top notch training, but if you
never learn where to get auditions or find voice-over work, it's worthless.
The 4 main voice-over marketing strategies are:
- Online Marketplaces - like upwork.com, fiverr.com and freelancer.com
- Voice-over Casting Websites - voices.com, voice123.com
- Voice-Over Agents
- And Self-Marketing - which can include email marketing, calling
businesses, SEO, adwords, etc.
