Problem Set For Mechanical Waves & Sound Waves Deadline: April 12, 2021

This document contains 8 problems related to mechanical and sound waves. The problems cover topics like calculating particle displacement and speed for a traveling wave, determining properties of a sinusoidal wave, calculating wavelength given tension and other properties, finding power carried by a wave on a wire, calculating sound intensity reductions, interference of sounds from multiple sources, determining speed of prey from reflected sound frequencies, and beat frequencies from rotating sound sources.

PROBLEM SET FOR MECHANICAL WAVES & SOUND WAVES

Deadline: April 12, 2021

1. An equation that gives the particle displacement for a medium in which there is a
simple harmonic traveling wave is y(x, t) = (2/π) sin π(3x + 2t) where x and y are in
centimeters and t is in seconds. Calculate the speed of a particle at the location x = 4
cm at t = 2 s.
2. A sinusoidal wave is described by y(x, t) = 0.15 sin[10π(t – x/60)]. Using SI units,
determine its (a) amplitude, (b) angular frequency, (c) angular wave number,
(d)wavelength, (e)wave speed, and (f) direction of motion.
3. With what tension must a rope with length 2.50 m and mass 0.120 kg be stretched
for transverse waves of frequency 40.0 Hz to have a wavelength of 0.750 m?
4. A wire with mass 3.00 g and length 80.0 cm is stretched with a tension of 25.0 N. A
wave with frequency 120.0 Hz and amplitude 1.6 mm travels along the wire.
Calculate the average power carried by the wave.
5. You live on a busy street, but as a music lover, you want to reduce the traffic
noise.
(a) If you install special sound-reflecting windows that reduce the sound intensity
level (in dB) by 30 dB, by what fraction have you lowered the sound intensity 1in
(W/m2)? (b) If, instead, you reduce the intensity by half, what change (in dB) do you
make in the sound intensity level?
6. Small speakers A and B are driven in phase at 725 Hz by the same audio oscillator.
Both speakers start out 4.50 m from the listener, but speaker A is slowly moved
away as in the figure.
a) At what distance d will the sound from the speakers first produce destructive
interference at the
listener’s location?
b) If A is moved even farther away than in part (a), at what distance d will the
speakers next produce
destructive interference at the listener’s location?
c) After A starts moving away from its original spot, at what distance d will the
speakers first produce
constructive interference at the listener’s location?
7. Horseshoe bats emit sounds from their nostrils and then listen to the frequency of
the sound
reflected from their prey to determine the prey’s speed. A horseshoe bat flying at
speed vbat emits
sound of frequency fbat; the sound it hears reflected from an insect flying toward it
has a higher frequency
a) Show that the speed of the insect is
where v is the speed of sound.
b) If fbat = 80.7 kHz, frefl = 83.5 kHz, and vbat = 3.9 m/s, calculate the speed of the
insect.
8. A turntable 1.50 m in diameter rotates at 75 rpm. Two speakers, each giving off
sound at wavelength 31.3 cm, are attached to the rim of the table at opposite ends
of a diameter. Alistener stands in front of the turntable.
a) What is the greatest beat frequency the listener will receive from this system?
b) Will the listener be able to distinguish individual beats?
