Exercise 10a. El Filibusterismo
A. Answer the following question in your own words or ideas.
1. Why did some Filipino patriots push for reforms in the Philippines?
Some patriots push for reforms in the Philippines because they are still hoping that they will get
the freedom that Filipinos want. Filipinos re fighting for what is right, Filipinos own this land and
not the Spaniards. Filipinos were already civilized before and the Spaniards only said that we
are not. And thanks to Rizal and his comrades they are able to imply those ideas through
wiriting.
2. What is your view of those people who are out in the streets and expresses their
disappointment through rally or protest?
I believe that there is a far better solution to apprehend disappointment from the government,
but I believe that protesting or having a rally is also one of the things to inform the people of
what is really happening in society but still not the best in apprehending those issues. I believe
that writing is the best tool we could ever have and having communication and having an
education is the best way to bring the truth.
3. Is it right for an individual to keep quiet and not to complain even if other individuals taking
advantage of one’s silence? justify your answer
I believe that it is not right to keep quiet and not to complain, because every individual has
rights, a right to live, the right to speak and to express his opinions. If an individual is having a
fear to confront the one who is taking advantage, an individual must go to the authorities to
complain but if the authorities are the problem, it’s time to bring the majority of the people
because an individual cannot solve it without help.
4. How was Rizal able to print his second novel?
It was thanks to Valentin Ventura that Rizal was able to print his second novel. He started to
write his second novel while he was in Calamba and finished it in Biarritz on March 29, 1891.
5. Based on the summary of El Fili, what is your impression of the novel?
Based on the summary of El Fili, I can say that it was more sinister than the Noli me Tangere.
Simon filled with revenge now from the experience he has in Noli me Tangere as Crisostomo
Ibara, He has begun to plot his way to trample the government down and also the friars. It
depicts that revenge is not a key to reformation but rather people should be aware that
greediness to everything will lead us to our downfall. We should always be humble and help
people who are in need.
6. Which do you prefer, Noli or Fili? Support your answer
For me, I prefer the Noli me Tangere because not only it was long but the chapters that are
contained there were lighter than the El Filibusterismo. Also, as a youth, I was able to reflect on
how those teenagers in the past act when they have crushes. And how Rizal depicted in the
Noli me Tangere the importance of having an education. It teaches us youth to be outspoken
and be adventurous and seek the enlightenment that we need to do to support our country.
