78 Music Cheat Sheet

Elements of Music (The Ingredients)

 Melody/Pitch High and low sounds
 Beat The pulse (tap your foot along too)
 Rhythm Long and short sounds (duration of notes/note values)
 Dynamics Loud, medium, soft
 Tempo Fast, medium, slow
 Texture Layers of music
 Timbre Instruments (and their sound quality)

Note Names & Values

Note names can be American (Whole etc.) or European (Semibreve etc.) We only use the American
names in Years 78 Music.

Whole Note (Semibreve) 4 counts

Half Note (Minim) 2 counts
Quarter Note (Crochet) 1 count Quarter note rest is worth 1 count (only rest we look at)
Eighth Note (Quaver) ½ count
(We don’t use a sixteenth note in 78)

Dotted notes we add half of the value of the note it is attached to the original value. E.g. a dotted half
note/minim is worth 3 counts. A half note is worth 2, half of 2 is 1 so 2 + 1= 3.

Keyboard

Refer to ‘The Basics’ Sheet (note a measure is also called a bar). Please note the info re the LH is
different at the bottom of the RH corner to what we will teach).

When we start playing Music both the RH and LH thumb share Middle C. Each finger plays one key:
RH 1C, 2D, 3E, 4F, 5G (going up)
LH 1C, 2B, 3A, 4G, 5F (going backwards from Middle C)
Notes names in the treble and bass clef
Middle C is to the left of the two black keys in the centre of the piano/keyboard. The Music alphabet
starts on a and goes to g, once we get to G we start back at A again. ABCDEFGABCD etc. You can work
out every note just by going up the alphabet in the treble (line, space) and backwards in the bass clef.
Ledger lines (mini lines) are used when we run out of the stave and keep going up or down using the
line, space system.

We can use a couple of rhymes to help us:

Treble Lines: Every Good Boy Does Fine

Treble Spaces: F A C E in the space

Bass Lines: Gum Boots Do Feel Awful

Bas Spaces: All Cows Eat Grass

Ukulele
Chords & Strumming
The grid represents the first five frets of the ukulele as if the uke is standing vertically. The chord name is
written at the top, the dots show where to put your fingers and the number at the bottom shows you which
finger to use.

We learn 4 chords in 78 Music:

C, F, G, Am A (A minor)
