Helpful notes
Gauge, yarn and size: Materials:
As with most amigurumi patterns, gauge
is not important (yay!). You can easily ● E US (3.5 mm) hook
substitute a different yarn from the one I ● yarn/tapestry needle
used, even one with a different weight, ● removable stitch markers
just make sure you change your hook ● two 15 mm plastic safety eyes
accordingly: a finer weight yarn requires ● polyester fiberfill stuffing
a smaller hook, and a bulkier weight yarn
requires a larger hook.
The size of your ghost will also change, Yarn:
depending on the yarn and hook you Impeccable by Loops and Threads
choose (finer yarn + smaller hook =
smaller ghost!). (worsted 100% acrylic)
- White #01005: 45 yds (41 m)
Make note that when you change yarn
weight, you will also need different
yardage than what I suggest (bulkier yarn
needs more yardage), and the exact Size when finished:
positioning of different pieces you are approximately 4.5 inches (11.5 cm)
attaching may need to be adjusted.
Experiment with different hook sizes
with the yarn you have chosen. The goal
is to create a fabric that does not have Skill level:
large holes that stuffing can get through,
but also not so tight that it is difficult to
crochet and the fabric is stiff. If you find
your fabric does have large holes, simply
decrease your hook size.
All the materials and information listed here are based on what I used for my sample
seen in this pattern.

Back loop only:
Unless noted otherwise, this pattern is crocheted into the back loops only. If you
have made amigurumi before, you most likely crocheted into both loops. Unsure of
the difference? Have a look at the following pictures:
When stitches are worked
through both loops (indicated
by the two black lines in the
photo), you insert your hook
under the front AND back
loops of the stitch you are
crocheting into.
On the other hand, when
stitches are worked into the
back loop (indicated by the
single black line in the photo),
you insert your hook only
under the back loop of the
stitch you are crocheting into.
Notice also the difference in appearance of the fabric that is created: when you
work into the back loops only, the front loop remains on the surface of the fabric,
creating ridges at each row. These are useful for counting rounds and attaching
pieces!
This pattern was specifically designed to be crocheted in the back loops only, a
method I prefer. You can crochet in both loops for this pattern if you would like,
but the shape of your finished amigurumi may be different than mine.

Continuous rounds:
This pattern is crocheted in the round in a continuous spiral (no joining or turning
between rounds). Use your stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round so
you know when you have completed a round.
Magic ring:
All pieces in this pattern start with a magic ring. A magic ring is a great technique
because it prevents a large hole from forming at the start of your pieces. If you are
unfamiliar with this method, need a refresher, or you find this technique tricky,
check out my tutorial: h
ttp://hookabee.com/tutorials/ .
Abbreviations:
rnd(s) = round(s)
st = stitch
ch = chain
slst = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
inc = increase (single crochet twice in next stitch)
dec = decrease (single crochet next two stitches together)
A note on style: All designers have their own style for writing their patterns and it
can sometimes get confusing! For me, I try to use as few words as possible to keep
things clean and fast to read. In my patterns, when you see a number before a
stitch, it indicates how many times to do that stitch consecutively . For example:
- ‘3 sc’
means: (single crochet once in the next stitch) 3 times
- ‘3 inc’
means: (single crochet twice in the next stitch) 3 times
- ‘3 dec’
means: (single crochet two stitches together) 3 times

NOTE: back loop
Unless indicated otherwise, this pattern is crocheted into the
only (see page 3).
Body:
Make a magic ring, 1 ch
6 sc in magic ring (6)
rnd 1:
rnd 2:
inc in each st around (12)
rnd 3:
(inc, 1 sc) 6 times (18)
rnd 4: 1 sc, (inc, 2 sc) 5 times, inc, 1 sc (24)
rnd 5: (inc, 3 sc) 6 times (30)
rnd 6: 2 sc, (inc, 4 sc) 5 times, inc, 2 sc (36)
rnd 7:
(inc, 5 sc) 6 times (42)
rnd 8-20: sc in each st around (42, 13 rnds)
rnd 21: crochet into the front loops only
of rnd 20: (slst, sc, hdc, 2 ch, sc in 2nd ch
from hook, hdc, sc, slst) 7 times, slst into
back loop of first st of rnd (7 points total)
rnd 22:
crochet into the
back loops only
of rnd 20: sc in each st around (42)
©hookabee Grimm the Ghost 6
Continue in back loops only for rest of body.
rnd 23: (dec, 5 sc) 6 times (36)
rnd 24: 2 sc, (dec, 4 sc) 5 times, dec, 2 sc (30)
Don’t fasten off yet…
Note: For all the following instructions for
attaching pieces, you can of course place
them wherever and however you want.
There is no wrong way! These are simply
guidelines for the ghost I made.
Place eyes at rnd 10, with 7 stitches in
between them.
Add stuffing to the body. You will not be
able to fill it completely at this point, so make
sure you add more later before closing up.
Continue crocheting...
rnd 25: (dec, 3 sc) 6 times (24)
rnd 26: 1 sc, (dec, 2 sc) 5 times, dec, 1 sc (18)
rnd 27: (dec, 1 sc) 6 times (12)
rnd 28: 6 dec (6)
Cut yarn and stitch opening closed. See
the video or photo tutorial on my website
for closing if you are unsure how to do
www.hookabee.com/tutorials/
this:
Arm:
(make 2)
Make a magic ring, 1 ch
rnd 1:
6 sc in magic ring (6)
rnd 2-3: sc in each st around (6, 2 rnds)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to attach to body. Flatten the opening of each arm so
the yarn tail is to one side.
©hookabee Grimm the Ghost 7
Attach arms at rnd 13, with 11 or 12 stitches in between. The flattened arms are 3
stitches across at the base, therefore whipstitch each to 3 front loops on the body
(whipstitch = bring your needle first through a front loop on the body and then
through BOTH layers of the flattened arm for each of the 3 stitches across the
piece). Tie a knot and hide the yarn end within the ghost’s body.
