Project Summary : India is one of the popular agricultural based countries in the world, having highest demand for
water to supplement industry and agriculture sector apart from being using in domestic purpose.
Infact, India has 18% of world population, having 4% of world’s fresh water, out of which 80% is
used in agriculture. India receives an average of 4,000 billion cubic meters of precipitation every
year. A dearth of storage procedure, lack of adequate infrastructure, inappropriate water
management has created a situation where only 18-20% of the water is actually used. However,
only 48% of it is used in India’s surface and groundwater bodies. India’s annual rainfall is around
1183 mm, out of which 75% is received in a short span of four months during monsoon (July to
September). This result in run offs during monsoon and calls for irrigation investments for rest of the
year. However, total water availability for irrigation and population in India became an important
task for people to think for radical enhancement of productivity of irrigation like “more crop per
drop”. These alarming signals making people make more innovation and alternative technology
need to be developed. Moreover, areas like Rayalaseema (Kadapa 15° 34' N 79° 09' E, Chittoor
13° 13' N 79° 08' E, Kurnool 15° 50' N 78° 05' E, and Ananthapur 14° 41' N77° 39' E districts) in the
state of Andhra Pradesh mostly depending on ground water for agricultural sector and drip irrigation
as better on-form management of water and use of more efficient delivery mechanisms.

A simple smart concept has been developed to solve all above probles i.e., automatic solar

submersible pumps. PV cells are used to generate electricity, which is stored in rechargeable

batteries (optional). These batteries produce for the system operation asubmersible pump controller
is used to pump water from a borewell to storge tank. Then the water is dran by a submerisable
pump at the slopes toe ,where they installed sprinklers to water the crops or plants.

Indian economy depends on the agricultural field. The central theme of the proposed project is to
apply IOT(optional) technology to make irrigation effective without much human effort the farming
and watering systems can be done effectively by using Arduino controller &soil moisture
sensors. The main objective of these project is low cost, farmers friendly. In this IOT smart irrigation,
various sensors would be used to know the status of the soil and moisture. These sensors collect
the required data from soil and sends the data to IOT device. Then these IOT devices will also send
the data to the cloud to get appropriate alerts to the farmers to improve quality and growth with
respect to the nature of the soil, weather and other factors.

Objective : • To setup a solar power grid based smart water pumping system using Arduino.
•To design and development of affordable automated machine operation using humidity sensors.
•Pilot studies for implementation of the solar based irrigation pump system in Tribal and other
Remote areas
•Development of standard operational procedure (SOP) to operate the smart system using IOT
(Optional).
•To develop small and large scale solar based smart pump systems for better irrigation and to avoid
water scarcity in drought areas of agriculture sector.

Keywords : Solar panels, water storage, Submersible Pump, Controllers, Moisture Sensor,LED display.

Expected Output and Outcome of the proposal :

The outcome of the proposed system is uses the sunlight to run the water pump and stores the water in tank . The
pumping system control is depending upon the water level indication sets in water storage tank. Water is supplies to the
field from the water storage tank is depends upon the controllers. For the controller ,the arranged soil sensor in the
agricultur field will gives the analog information to the controller about the moisture of the field. After the information
receives from sensor it will releases or stop the water flow to field depends on moisture.if the moisture is less water will
releases and if moisture is high controller will stops the water. All this information will be displayed on LED display. It is user
friendly

1. Origin of the proposal

Due to the lack of the water Good seed and fertilizers fail to achieve their full potential in
agriculture. Indian agriculture accounts for 90% water use due to fast track ground water
depletion and poor irrigation systems. Today ground system is the largest, covering – 160 million
ha of cultivated land in India with 39 million ha irrigated by ground water, 22 million ha by
irrigated canals and about two third of cultivation in India is still depending on monsoon.
Droughts have severe impacts on economy, society and environment affecting crops, irrigation,
livestock, wildlife, soil, health problems, public safety ultimately leading to severe loss to human
life. Drought in India has resulted in millions of deaths over the course of the 18 th, 19th, and 20th
centuries. The latest findings suggest that while there have been alternate dry and wet spells over
the past three decades, the frequency of occurrence of drought years has significantly increased
in India. According to meteorologists the frequency is set to increase between 2020 and 2049.
Indian agriculture is crucially dependent on the local climate: favorable southwest summer
monsoon is critical in securing water for irrigating crops In some parts of India, the lack of
monsoons result in water shortages, resulting in below-average crop yields. This particularly
occurs in major drought-prone regions such as Southern and Eastern Maharashtra (Western
India), Northern Karnataka (South-Western India), Andhra Pradesh (Southeastern coast of
India), Odisha (Eastern coast of India), Telangana (Southeastern coast of India) and Rajasthan
(Western India).

Traditionally farmers will present in their fields to do irrigation process. But nowadays farmers
need to manage their agricultural activity along with other occupations. Automation in irrigation
system makes farmer work much easier. Sensor based automated irrigation system provides
promising solution to farmers where presence of farmer in field is not compulsory.

Stored water can either be used for drinking water or for irrigation purposes. For the latter, stored
water is used to cover the demand of crops during the dry season or even during dry spells in the
rainy season and thereby prolong the cropping period
There are several means to store harvested water:

 “Direct storage in the soil profile, which is usually associated with runoff farming.
 Water storage in tanks, cisterns, ponds, reservoirs or groundwater storage.

A storage facility is often required for water distribution supply systems in areas with long dry
periods. Where precipitation fluctuates widely over [the] years, storage of harvested water
outside the soil matrix becomes an essential part of the water harvesting system

2. Review of status of Research and development in the subject

International status :
water is the ultimate requirement of variety of purposes across the world.many governamnets
are struggling to supplement water demand for irrigation,Industry as well as domestic purpose.
Several smart ,cost effective techniques are developed for usage of water in an effective manner
without compromising the requirements of contemprory needs of the public.
AI Abdelkerim and his team the developed an intelligent irrigation system, which can be used
in plantation. The utilization of greenhouse concept is used in the paper for reducing atmosphere
pollution. The system consists of hardware and software and, finally, the integration of the two
parts to provide the results.[1]
Dr. Esther T. Ososanya, University of the District of Columbia, in their paper addresses
water scarcity and food crisis by designing and implementing a smart irrigation system. It
presents the details of a solar-powered automated irrigation system that dispenses the exact
amount of water required depending on the soil moisture, hence minimizing the waste of water.
A network of sensor nodes is used to collect the humidity and temperature of the soil which is
transmitted to a remote station. This data will be analyzed and used to remotely control the
amount of water dispensed by solenoid valves. The designed project is currently operating at the
university-owned agricultural experimental research station. The system can be tailored to the
type of food or crop being grown. The design team incorporated the theory of digital control and
feedback systems, and digital communication in the design and implementation of this
project.[2]
Jia Uddin propose a solar power controlled automated irrigation system. Sensors collect the
information about the water level of paddy fields and update the farmer as well as the
microcontroller. The farmer can switch ON and OFF the motor based on the water level even
from distant places using a cell phone. However, if the water level reaches to the danger level,
then the motor will automatically start to ensure the proper water level in the paddy field[3].

National Status :
India is one of the popular agricultural based countries in the world, having highest demand for
water to supplement industry and agriculture sector apart from being using in domestic purpose.
However, total water availability for irrigation and population in India became an important task
for people to think for radical enhancement of productivity of irrigation like “more crop per
drop” need to be developed. Moreover, areas like Rayalaseema (Kadapa 15° 34' N 79° 09' E,
Chittoor 13° 13' N 79° 08' E, Kurnool 15° 50' N 78° 05' E, and Ananthapur 14° 41' N77° 39' E
districts) in the state of Andhra Pradesh mostly depending on ground water for agricultural sector
and drip irrigation as better on-form management of water and use of more efficient delivery
mechanisms.
Prof. K. A. Patil ,proposed a model for smart agriculture to develop real time monitoring system
for soil properties like temperature, moisture, pH and to implement decision support advisory
models for Pest & Disease forewarning, Crop Disease identification using image analysis and
SMS based alerts. It will also be possible to control various operations of the field remotely from
anywhere, anytime by mobile as well as web application.[4]

Mr. M. A. Murtaza, in her paper an experimental scale within rural areas where there is an
enormous disposition of irrigation system which is executed using arm controller and wireless
communication. The main of this implementation was to demonstrate that the automatic
irrigation system can be used to optimize /reduce water usage. It can also be a photovoltaic
irrigation system which consists of a solar powered that is the soil moisture sensor and
temperature sensor placed under the soil where plants roots are reached which is a distributed
network. The system has a water level sensor which will indicate the presence of water level in
tank. A software application was advanced by programming the verge values of soil moisture
water level that was automated into a microcontroller[5]
S. Harishankar with their team , propose an automatic irrigation system using solar power
which drives water pumps to pump water from bore well to a tank and the outlet valve of tank is
automatically regulated using controller and moisture sensor to control the flow rate of water
from the tank to the irrigation field which optimizes the use of water. Even though there is a high
capital investment required for this system to be implemented, the overall benefits are
high and in long run this system is economical. [6]

2.1.The main importance of the proposal is to overcome the power and water problems
in Tribal &Rural areas in domestic and agriculture fields and another importance of
the proposal is to reduce the farmer physical strain and enhancing the irrigation
knowledge with respective to soil and weather conditions by if IOT.

2.2.If the project is location specific, basis for selection of location be highlighted:
The proposed system is very much usel full in the locations of Tribal and Rural areas
because of in these areas always have the problem with power and water both in
agriculture and domestic. In domestic the peoples are going faraway to bring one pot
of drinking water ,and the farmer are waits rain for their agriculture.
3. Work Plan:
3.1. Methodology:
 The probe used posed system explicates that the solar panel should be used to absorb
light energy from sun in order to convert it to electrical energy. The electrical energy
could be used for irrigation. The electrical energy generated from light energy is stored in
battery(0PTIONAL) and the next step is to convert into AC with the help
inverter(OPTIONAL). This AC is used to pump water for irrigation system. Water which
is pumped can be collected and stored in storage tanks near the agriculture fields.
 The pumping of the motor depends upon the level of the water in the storage tank. A
controller which indicates the water level is used. The level indicator indicates the level
of the water and it sends the information to the controller. If the water level is high
controller will stops the pumping automatically. Similarly if the water level is low the
pumping system will go off and on position all by itself.
 The arduino UNO is one of the widely used micro controller in the industry it is very
easy to handle, convenient to use. The coding of this micro controller is very simple. The
program of this micro controller is considered to be unstable due to the flash memory
technology. A wide range of applications of this micro controller is security, home
appliances, remote sensors and industrial automation.
 Soil moisture sensor is used to detect the soil moisture content this sensor has 2 outputs
analog and digital output. The digital output is permanent and analog output threshold
can be changed. The working principle of soil moisture sensor is open and short circuit
concept. Here the LED gives an indication when the output is high or low. The flow of
current depends on the condition of the soil. When the soil is dry then the sensor works
like an open circuit. Therefore the output will be maximum(water flow will come to ON
position) . when the soil is soaked the current will flow from one terminal to another. Soil
works like a closed circuit therefore the output will be zero (water flow will come to OFF
position ).
 In the agriculture field, sensors are used for detecting soil moisture. The information
received from the sensors is send to the data base folder though the android (optional)
device.
 In the control section the system is activated using application, it is stopped/ turned OFF
using ON/OFF buttons in the application also the system is automatically activated when
the soil moisture is less. The pump is switched ON based on the moisture content.
 The application has a feature, it can take some time and then water the field at the right
time. Also the switch turn OFF when the water supply will fails. other parameters such as
the moisture sensor demonstrate threshold price and the level of water in the soil. In the
agriculture field sensors are used to detect soil moisture is sent to the data base folder to
the android device.
 In the control section the system is activated using the application, this is stopped using
the ON/OFF buttons in the applications. Also, the system is automatically activated when
the soil moisture is less. The pump is switched ON the moisture content. In the system
there is switch is to turn OFF if the water supply system is fails.
