2. Which is a continuous random variable?
A. weather temperature B. size of shoes C. length of hair D. All of these
3. A social worker is involved in a study about family structure. She obtains information
regarding the number of children per family for a certain community from the census data.
What is the random variable of interest and what kind of random variable is it?
A. number of family members-discrete B. length of stay - continuous

5. The president of a major university was concerned about alcohol abuse on her campus and
wanted to find out the proportion of students at her university who visited campus bars on the
weekend before the final exam week. Her advisor took a random sample of 250 students. The
total number of students in the sample who visited campus bars on the weekend before the final
exam week is an example of ____
A. a categorical random variable B. a discrete random variable
C. a continuous random variable D. a parameter
6. The following statements refer to the properties of the normal probability distribution
EXCEPT
A. The distribution curve is bell-shaped
B. The curve is asymmetrical about its center.
C. The mean, median, and mode are equal
D. The curve is asymptotic (it does not touch the base line)
For items 7-9. The number of ships to arrive at a harbor on any given day is a random variable represented
by x . The probability distribution for x is as follows:
x 10 11 12 13 14
P( x ) 0.4 0.2 0.2 0.1 0.1
7. What is the mean?
A. 11. 3 B. 14.0 C. 10.2 D. 12.3
8. What is the variance?
A. 0.45 B. 1.12 C. 1.25 D. 1.81
9. What is the standard deviation?
A. 1.17 B. 1.35 C. 1.64 D. 1.72
For items 10-12. The amount of fill (weight of contents) put into a glass jar of spaghetti sauce is normally
distributed with a mean μ=850 grams and standard deviationσ =8 grams.
10. What probability that one jar selected at random contains between 848 grams and 855
grams?

855 grams?
A. 11.01% B. 20.34% C. 88.77% D. 92.77%
II. A.
13 – 17. Provide a situation/example where it can be considered a random variable. Explain
why it is a random variable then give at least five (5) of elements/outcomes under such
variable then identify whether it is discrete or continuous (5 points).
Example: daily exercise. This can be considered as random variable because it may
represents numerical outcomes such as the number of hours spent by a person in physical
exercise. The possible outcomes are: 1 hour, 2.5 hours, 3 hours, 3.25 hours, 4 hours.
Looking at the outcomes I could say that “daily exercise” referring to the number of hours
spent is an example of a continuous variable.
B.Read, solve and show your solution. (3 points)
For items 18-20. Every night when you get home from school, you take your dog Bantay for a walk. The
length of the walk is normally distributed with a mean of m = 15 minutes and a standard deviation of s = 3
minutes
18. What proportion of walks last less than 15 minutes?
19. What proportion of walks last longer than 20 minutes?
20. What proportion of walks last between 10 and 16 minutes?
