Discreate Structures Graph Theory Explained in Detail.

The document is an assignment submission for a Discrete Structures course. It discusses applications of graph theory in solving real-life problems. Specifically, it provides 5 examples of how graphs can be used to represent food chains in biology, plan business programs step-by-step, depict molecular formulas in chemistry, create mind maps for writing, and illustrate data flow between systems. The student responded to the course learning outcome of explaining concepts and terms related to discrete structures such as graph theory.

DISCRETE STRUCTURES
ASSIGNEMENT NO .1
ANSWER:

GRAPH:
‘A pictorial representation of data in the form of sets of vertices and
edges where the vertices appear as the endpoint of their respective
edges is called a graph.’

APPLICATIONS IN SOLVING REAL LIFE PROBLEMS:

1)Food chains and Food webs:

In biology, we use directed graph to represent the set of animals
in the form of predator and prey in a graphical form in order to
determine the set of animals eating and being eaten. Graph
theory is used in such a way that at top vertex we have a predator
and under it by using edges we take it to other vertices where the
preys on which it feeds upon are mentioned. In this way graph
theory is useful in biology for determining the system of eating
and being eaten by the animals and it can be used for
preservation of animals as well.

2) Step by step planning of a program:

In business when a new plan is introduced the initial planning
can be done in the form of graphical representation by using
graph theory. It will represent that the step by step procedure for
implementation of the procedure and at the end we will receive
the required outcome. It provides a systematic way and order of

doing tasks and eventually help in better analyzation and

implementation of the tasks.
3)Molecular Formula:
Molecular representation is a very important phenomenon in
chemistry. For this representation we also use the graph theory based
on edges and vertices to represent a molecular formula. The scientists
are using this particular technique for solving all the issues of the
molecular structures. The representation in this regard is like the
vertices represent the atoms involved and the edges show their
bonding. For example:
O (vertices)
(edges)
H H

4)Mind Mapping
Mind mapping is a technique used in writing skills. It is usually felt
that due to scattered ideas it becomes difficult to assemble them on a
piece of paper directly. Therefore, mind map, which is the graphical
representation of main points, is written forth the main context. Here
the central idea is the main vertex and edges from the main vertex
leads to other vertex where the points of the topic are written. It is very
useful for writers as it simplifies the overall task.
5)Flow of data:
The knowledge of the flow of data from one place to another is very
essential as It tells user about people who can access that data and also
Whether the data is in the safe hands or not therefore the
representation of data through different routers and computers can be
represented by using directed graphs in order to provide a complete
pathway of data transferring and facilitating the users by telling them
who can access the data.
