Children and Chores: Good or Bad?
Some children can be very lazy. However, there is a way to change that. There has been a
debate over the years on if children should be required to do chores or not. Many people believe
that they should not be made to do chores. However, children should be required to do chores
because it teaches them, they cannot have everything handed to them and chores show them
responsibility.
First, children in this generation expect everything to be handed to them. However,
children need to learn that at some point in their lives, there will no longer be anyone there for
them to run to. Plenty of children expect their parents or guardians to clean up the messes they
made. They want their parents to clean their rooms, do their laundry, take care of their dirty
plates after each meal. However, while their parents are doing these things, they’re off running
around, playing with their friends, or playing video games. Children need to start doing chores
before they run off and do what they want. This will teach them that they cannot have other
people doing everything for them (Broadbent.)
In comparison, some people may believe children should not be required to do chores
because it takes away from their childhood (Bocks.) Some people contend that if children are
doing chores it will only take away a few hours of their week, leaving them plenty of time to go

off and do kid things. Although true to a certain extent, children have no responsibilities and can
run off with their friends any time they want, with children doing chores it will show them that
life will not always be so simple. Children can enjoy their childhood, while also being required
to do chores.
Secondly, children growing up in this generation often do not have a sense of
responsibility. Since they grew up having everything they wanted handed right to them, and had
someone doing everything for them, they do not know what it’s like to have responsibilities.
Most children get home from school, and instantly run off and go do whatever they want.
However, making children do chores will keep them on a schedule, show them they need to do
work before running off, and show them how to be responsible (Morin.) Parents need to start
enforcing rules about chores. Kids should be doing a few chores before going outside to play or
playing a video game. If they do not do their chores, then they should not be allowed to run off
and have fun. Chores will help plenty of children in the long run.
On the other hand, many people may believe that children should not have to do chores
because they think it could be dangerous (Active Tots Zone.) It is argued that some chores may
be dangerous in a way. However, no chore is as dangerous as allowing your child to run the
streets and do as they please with no adult supervision. Even if some chores are dangerous, there
are plenty of chores out there that are perfectly safe for a child to perform.
In conclusion, children should be required to do chores because it shows them, they
cannot have everything handed to them, and it shows them responsibility. Children need to learn
that at some point in life they will no longer have everything handed to them by their parents.
Responsibilities should be taught to young children, so that they do not grow up and have no idea

how to be responsible. If children are not taught these things, they could grow up to be very
bratty, and possibly a very rude individual.
