Integrated Lesson

Name: Paulina Alvarez

Date: April 28, 2020
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Title: Around the World: What is the same, but how is it different?
Subject Matter: Social Studies and ELA integration.

Standards:
Thinking within the discipline involves the ability to identify, compare, and evaluate multiple
perspectives about a given event to draw conclusions about that event since there are
multiple points of view about events and issues.
● 2.SP2.1 Compare diverse cultures from around the world using primary sources such as
photographs, artifacts, and music and secondary sources such as fiction and non-fiction.

Global interconnections and spatial patterns are a necessary part of geographic reasoning. ●
2.G4.1 Identify different physical and cultural regions in the world.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

●2.RL.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to
demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

Lesson Objective(s):
● Students will learn to compare different cultures based on geographic location.
● Students will learn that people’s way of living varies from country to country.
● Students will learn to point out differences from place to place, but ways in which they
are similar.
● Students will be able to locate on a map in which continents India and the United States
are located.
● Students will create a Venn diagram as a group to see the differences/similarities the
two characters in the book share regardless of where they come from.
● Students will learn about the components of a letter and its purpose.
● Students will produce a letter of their own for a possible pen pal.

Language Objective(s):
● Students will use full sentences to discuss similarities and differences they notice in the
book Same, Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw.

● Students will write a letter for a possible pen pal and use proper grammar (Capital letters,
comas, periods).

● Possible Vocabulary Words: Ocean(s), Village, Sea, Climb, Brick

Assessment (formal/informal):
Formal: After the reading students will produce a venn diagram based on the story.
Students will be given an exit ticket with the seven continents and they should be able to mark
with a star the continents the story takes place in (North America and Asia).
Students will create a letter after going over the different components of a letter. The letter will
show their writing skills and grammar comprehension.

Informal:
Observations based on comprehension of how countries can be the same in some ways, yet
different (ei: buildings, structures, landmarks etc..).
Discussions will provide opportunity for informal assessment of the students learning on the
content.

Materials Needed:
For teacher:

● Picture Book: Same, Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw

● Computer and internet (for videos about India and the U.S.)
● Projector
● A map of the world or image from google with the seven continents labeled clearly
(Example provided below).
● Copies of map of the world with seven continents without label for exit ticket (see
example attached).
● White board and dry erase markers

Students need:
● Blank copy of map to label the two continents from the picture book.
● A copy of the letter components.
● A copy of the blank letter format to write their own letter
● Pencil
● Scissors
● Glue sticks
● Crayons or colors

Lesson Description:
We will learn about how living can vary from country to country and how although
many things are different, they can be very similar as well. Students will be introduced to the
book Same, Same, but Different. Through the book students will learn about America and India.
Elliot and Kailash, the two characters from the book who are pen pals, exchange letters
describing to each other where they live and how they live. The book will provide students with
a glance at the life of two children with different cultural backgrounds and life experiences. For
example, students will notice the tall buildings in America in comparison to a river flowing
through a village. They will also note the difference in pets and animals that the two characters
interact with, among other things. Students will also learn about how through letters people
are able to communicate from one part of the world to another, At this point students may
mention other forms of communication that they may be familiar with such as e-mail, text
messages etc… which will be discussed briefly and show how they are another example of
something that’s the same, but also different.
Upon finishing the book we will create a Venn Diagram as a group on some of the
similarities and differences they noticed. I will begin by prompting students to think about the
images they saw in the book with questions such as: Where did Elliot and Kailash lived? What
kind of animals did they have? We will record answers on the white board (After finishing, a
picture will be taken for teacher purposes in order to create an anchor chart). Once finished
with the venn diagram and the discussion students will get a chance to watch two different
videos that talk about India and the U.S. in order to expose them to some of the things and
places in both countries.
Once we have had all of the above completed we will start learning about the
components of a letter such as: Heading, greeting, body, etc...

Process and Steps:

1. The lesson will begin by gathering students at the carpet for a read aloud of Same Same
but Different.
2. I will then tap into their prior knowledge by asking about what they think culture is. A
couple of answers will be taken and written on the white board.
3. I will then continue by showing them the cover of the book and read the title followed
by the question: What do you think the book will be about?
4. I will begin to read the story and ensure I point to the title, author, illustrator, etc..(a list
of possible words that children may not be familiar with will have been created prior to
the reading to ensure we discuss them). I will make a pause to point out possible
unknown words and write them on the white board and ensure they understand the
meaning of the words example: village.
5. I will then use a physical map or display a map of the world with the seven continents
labeled to show students where North America and Asia are located.
6. I will play two different videos for students to get a glance of India in real life and of the
U.S.. Both videos are in the form of songs and they cover the states in both countries,
landmarks, and more.
7. The map will be displayed once again for students to see, but this time without being
labeled. I will ask if someone would like to point to where North America or Asia is (A
couple responses will be taken).
8. After having the group discussion and the showing of the two videos we will then
discuss what are some of the things that seemed the same from our town to that of
Elliot and Kailash in order to continue furthering their thinking.
9. After our group activities we will then begin our discussion on letters and the
components of it and its use.
10. Once students become familiarized with the format of a letter they will be presented
with the first worksheet to work on individually in which they will have to cut and glue
the parts that make up a letter accordingly (Students who may require further
assistance may work in groups of two in order to help each other).
11. Once students have finished their worksheet on labeling the parts of a letter they will
receive a second worksheet to create their own letter. Students will then begin to write
the letter describing where they live, just like in the story for a possible future pen pal
(minimum of 5 complete sentences with proper grammar).
12. After writing the letter students may use the back of their letter page to create a
drawing that shows what they have described on their letters.
13. Once students complete their letters they will be given an exit ticket which will consist
of a map with the seven continents. Students will be asked to mark with a star where
North America and Asia are located.
14. Students will turn in their letters and their exit ticket with the two continents labeled.
