Mole Detective Virtual Lab

This document provides information about identifying unknown compounds through laboratory analysis. It lists the names and formulas of common compounds. It also shows the work to find the molar mass of each compound. The document describes an experiment where the mass and moles of unknown compounds were measured and used along with molar mass calculations to determine the identity of each unknown compound as tin, iron, calcium hydroxide, copper(II) sulfate, zinc, or sodium chloride.

Lab: Mole Detectives

1. Write the name or formula for each of the following compounds:

a) Tin ________Sn____________________
b) Ca(OH)2 ______calcium hydroxide
c) Sodium acetate _____NaC2H3O2Na_______________________
d) Zn _________Zinc___________________
e) Copper (II) sulfate _______CuSO4_____________________
f) Potassium phosphate ______ K3PO4______________________
g) Fe ___________Iron_________________
h) NaNO3 __________sodium nitrate__________________
i) Nitrogen trichloride ________NCI3____________________
j) CaCO3 ______Calcium carbonate
k) Sodium chloride ________NaCI____________________
l) S5O2 _____Pentasulfur
dioxide_______________________

2. Determine the molar mass for each compound in #1. Show all work!!! ☺
a) Molar mass of Tin = 118.7g/mol
g) Molar mass of Fe= 55.8/mol

b) Molar mass of ca(OH)2= 40.08g/mol + 34.02g/mol = 74.10g/mol

h) Molar mass of NaNo= 22.99 + 14.01
+ (16.00)3 = 85.00g/mol

c) Molar mass of sodium acetate= 82.03 g/mol

i)Molar mass of nitrogen trichloride 120.365 g/mol

d) molor mass of Zn= 65.4 g/mol

j)Molar mass of calcium carbonate= 40.08 + 12.01 + 16.00(3) =
100.09mol

e) molar mass of copper(II) sulfate= 63.66 + 32.07 + 16.00(4) = 159.61 g/mol

k) Molar mass of
sodium chloride= 22.99 + 35.45 = 58.44 g/mol
f) molar mass of potassium phosphate 136 g/mol
l) S= 32.07
O= 16.00 x 2
= 64 g/mol
