Argumentative Essay Assignment - Written Expression I
Argumentative Essay Assignment - Written Expression I
Assignment: Write a 3-5 page essay in which you present an argument on any topic - YOUR
CHOICE!
Follow traditional MLA essay format: Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced, 1
inch margins, pages numbered, you name & class at the top left of the first page, title at the top
center. Make sure your essay is printed and stapled.
● Use at least 4-5 outside sources. Include in-text citations and a separate Works
Cited page. The Works Cited page does NOT count toward your page requirement.
-Your introduction should include a hook to grab the reader’s attention, connecting
information about the topic, background information about the problem, and a strong
thesis statement that states a clear position on the issue and includes a possible
counterargument. Remember: a thesis for an argument essay cannot be a fact and
should not be a personal opinion that cannot be proved.
-The 3 body paragraphs should each begin with a topic sentence that directly supports
your thesis and states the main idea of the entire paragraph. Each body paragraph
should focus on one supporting point each. One of your body paragraphs must be a
counterargument / refutation paragraph. Remember to use and cite outside sources in
your body paragraphs, but I mainly want to read your words and ideas (I.C.E. =
Introduce, Cite, Explain).
-Your conclusion should restate your thesis, summarize your main ideas, and give a call
to action (what should we do now/next?).
● Final drafts are due Wednesday, May 5 by 11:59pm.
● Deductions:
-If you fail to provide outlines, peer reviews, and proof of Writing Center appointment on

-Essays that contain outside source materials that have not been cited will receive an
automatic F.
