Hardware and Software Components

The document describes the hardware components of an RFID-based parking management system. The key components are RFID tags, readers, an access control box containing a controller and relay circuits, barriers, servers, displays and routers. Passive RFID tags are used which get power from readers and have unique IDs. Readers read tag data and pass it to the controller to check for valid tags and direct barriers. Servers store vehicle data and manage parking availability. The system uses various hardware from manufacturers like ID Tech, Sunmi, Impinj, Tico and Raspberry coupled with software dashboards and mobile apps to manage vehicle entry and parking.

Hardware Components

2. RFID Reader
3. Access Control Box
4. Boom Barrier
5. Server
6. Led Board

RFID Tag
There are two types of tags:
1. Active tags: These have their own power source, therefore big in size
2. Passive tags: These tags have no power source, they get activated by rays from the reader
We use passive tags because they are small in size and cost effective.
How does Tags work:
- Tag has two components - Antenna and Microchip. Antenna catches the rfid rays and the tag
gets activated. Microchip stores the Tag IDs
- Every tag has a unique ID (4-6 digits) which is created with the combination of TID (id given by
manufacturers) and EPC (Parkwheels created ID), so that it can’t be duplicated.
- These tags are made of tamper proof technology

How to activate the tags:

- Employees need to activate the tags through the parkwheel app by putting in a code given to
him.
- Admin needs to associate every Tag ID with employee ID. Admin can activate the tag directly
through their dashboard, no code needed here.

RFID Reader
Readers come in two variants: Car Reader(high strength) and Bike Reader(low strength). Reader reads
the data from tag and passes on to the controller.

Access Control Box

The box has three parts
- Controller
- Relay Circuits
- Router
ACB has 5 lights to depict if the following parts are working fine or not:
● RED - Electricity
● YELLOW - Internet
● ORANGE - Reader
● GREEN - Controller
● BLUE - Manual/Automatic

Controller
Controller, in a computing context, is a hardware device or a software program that manages or directs
the flow of data between two entities

How does the controller work:

After the reader passes on the information to controller, it (controller) checks the following things:
- If the tag is a parkwheel tag
- If the tag is active
If both the conditions are met, the controller passes on the data to the server for further calculations*.
Then the server either rejects the tag (the barrier doesn’t open) or sends a signal to the controller to
open the barrier.
Server
In net jargon, a server is a computer that serves many kinds of information to user or client machines.
How does the server works:
Server stores all the tag IDs and each tag ID is associated with following information
● Vehicle number
● Company name
● Vehicle Class
● Employee ID
*Server checks the above mentioned information and calculates the slots (adds one if entry, subtracts
one if exit, from the total number of parking slots given to a particular company) and takes decision and
sends signal to the controller to whether open the barrier or not.

Relay circuit
Relay circuit controls the barrier. Controller passes volt to relay which completes the circuit and barrier
opens.

Magnetic loop
The security feature is consist of two factors:
1. Auto closing - barrier should close after the car has passes the barrier
2. Safety - barrier shouldn’t come down if there’s any car under it

How magnetic loop works:

The magnetic loop is a safety mechanism which works on Electromagnetism. We put a coil 1 inch depth
in the ground and connect it to the barrier. Whenever the loop detects a metal, it doesn’t let the barrier
come down.

POS Device
1. Handheld devices are android based devices which are integrated with boom barriers for
operating (Opening/closing) the boom through mobile app.
2. There is an Emergency button on the app to open the boom barrier on manual mode or in case
of any emergency.
3. It has the provision of visitor entry and exit of vehicles which is done through admin/client
dashboard.
4. It shows real time parking availability of all the companies inside the building
5. It is incorporated with Billing system

Router
It connects the POS device with controller via wifi

Cloud Server

Software Components
Centralized Dashboard for Manager/Control Room
1. Centralized dashboard containing the data from all companies in one place. Display basic
metrics like
• Total vehicles in a day/week/month
• Vehicles currently present inside
• Traffic movement of each company;
2. Records can be view in tabular format for any day, week or month; Analytics section includes
record analyzed in the form of graph on daily, weekly and monthly basis; Complete details of the
Vehicles
• Entry/Exit time
• Type of vehicle owned
• Vehicle number / tag ID/ name of person etc.
3. Dashboard contains the provision for debarring the Parkwheels TAG if people leave the premise
or for any unwanted Vehicle.
4. It generates notification for any Tag not used for more than 30 days.
5. It consists of a Visitor Management System(VMS). This includes Entry of visitor details like Name,
Phone number, car details on dashboard of clients which gets stored at Handheld device of
Guards.

Dedicated dashboard for every client

1. It includes all the features of Manager software with the constraint that client can only view
information for its own Employees
2. It consists of the Visitor Management System.

Mobile App for Commuters

1. It is available on bothAndroid & IOS.
2. It shows real time status of parking availability of user’s company
3. It sends notification every time a vehicle enters or leaves the gate.
4. Discoverability feature - it shows the nearby parking spaces.

Points to remember
1. No counting is done at the exit gate, reader just checks if the tag is active and the company
name
2. Complete system is not dependent on the internet, it can work without the internet and when
the internet starts, the server puts the data on the cloud.
3. Dashboard and the app works on cloud. No real time availability of slots if there is no internet.
4. All the components are independent of each other i.e. if one of the Hardware is down it doesn’t
affect other hardware. For eg. If Boom Barrier is down due to some reason RFID Reader keeps
on working.
