Analyzing Data Reflection

The teacher analyzed student performance on a math test covering addition, subtraction, and division. As a class, performance was poor with a median score of 67%. Juan and Cody earned A's, with Juan scoring perfectly. Hugh tied for third highest with 80%. Luke scored lowest at 40% and needs one-on-one support to improve his understanding. Nathan and Sarah both need extra help, particularly on subtraction and division respectively.

Analyzing Data Assignment

1. How well is the class doing as a whole group?

❖ As a group the class did not do well on this test. With the grades being ranged so
drastically, and the median of the class being a 67, I as the teacher must not have
gone over the material well enough for the students to understand the concepts
before giving them this assessment. Addition was the classes’ strongest section as
72% of the students calculated the correct answers, but when it comes to
subtraction and division, I need to find a different way for the students to grasp
the material as only 68% and 61% calculated the correct answers, respectfully.
There were a few A’s but based on the results of this test, I have to treat those as
outliers, and go over the material as a class again.

2. Which individuals are doing well and in what topics?

❖ Juan is leading the class so far on this subject. He scored a perfect 100% on this
test, which no other student did. He shows a strong grasp of each topic of
addition, subtraction, and division. If I were to do partner or group projects for
this subject, I will partner him with a student who is having some difficulty to
perhaps aid that student by hearing some tips from a peer.
❖ Cody, the only other students to get an A on this test. He scored perfect marks in
both subtraction and division. He did miss one of the addiction questions, #1. I am
not worried about his addition skills, as only 56% of the class got that answer
correct, which leads me to believe that there was some confusion in the question
itself and not in the concept for him.
❖ Hugh was tied with two other students, for the third highest score of 80%. Hugh
showed a strong grasp of addition scoring 100% on that topic and in subtraction
where he only missed one question. Hugh’s proficiency did waver when it came
to the division questions, only scoring 60% on those questions, but there is not
much alarm with that, as he was right along the class average.

3. Who may need extra support and on what topics?

❖ Luke would be the student in need of the most support. He scored a 40% on the
test, averaging 25% in addition, and 40% in both subtraction and division, both
being well below the class average. I need to spend a bit more time, one on one
with Luke to help him grasp the material and assess if there are any underlying
issues.
❖ Nathan scored a 47% on the test, the only other student to score in the 40s. It is
interesting to note that he scored right about average with the class in division but
struggled with addition and especially subtraction. I need to find the disconnect,
as division is generally a harder concept to grasp.
❖ Sarah is another student who may need extra support, scoring a 53% on the test.
Her scores in division were the lowest in the class, showing that there is not a
strong grasp on that topic, so I will need to focus on that a bit more, for the
review. On the bright side, Sarah is doing really well in addition, scoring above
the class average on the topic, which is a good foundation to build upon as we try
to correct the mistakes shown in subtraction and division, which is the case for
most of the class.
