FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION QR20DE

Fail-safe Function
I When any of critical sensors or systems is malfunctioning,
fail-safe function estimates operating conditions with other
input signals and selects safer conditions for engine (vehicle)
control, based on the data previously stored in ECM.

SELF-DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION QR20DE

Outline
I In self-diagnosis, when any of critical sensors, actuators, or exhaust systems necessary for engine con-
trols is malfunctioning and self-diagnostic malfunction detection conditions are satisfied, malfunctioning
system is stored in ECM for easier trouble diagnosis. Results of self-diagnosis are either informed of by
malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) in combination meter, or displayed on CONSULT-II. This section describes
indications by MIL.
I There are two diagnostic modes, mode 1 and 2.The system is set to mode 1 in normal condition, while in
mode 2 self-diagnostic mode or function to monitor heated oxygen sensors is available.

Self-diagnosis Operation Procedure

I To start self-diagnosis mode, to monitor heated oxygen sensor, or to erase self-diagnosis results, refer to
the following.
CAUTION:
If accelerator pedal position sensor system has any malfunction, self-diagnosis (when CONSULT-II is
not used) cannot be started. Thus, perform self-diagnosis using CONSULT-II and eliminate malfunc-
tion.
STARTING MODE 2 (SELF-DIAGNOSIS)
1. Turn ignition switch ON with accelerator pedal released.
2. Immediately after turning ignition switch ON (within 3 seconds), fully depress and release accelerator pedal
repeatedly for 5 times within 5 seconds. (Stop the procedure with accelerator pedal released.)
3. Fully depress accelerator pedal within 7 seconds after releasing pedal, and keep it fully depressed for
approximately 10 seconds (until malfunction indicator lamp starts blinking). (Self-diagnosis starts.)
4. Release accelerator pedal, and perform self-diagnosis.
I With ignition switch remaining ON, self-diagnosis starts. (Self-diagnosis in mode 2)
I Start engine during self-diagnostic mode to shift to heated oxygen sensor monitoring function. (Heated
oxygen sensor monitor in mode 2)
I Turn OFF ignition switch to automatically go back to mode 1. (Normal condition)
CAUTION:
I Measure the time precisely using a watch.
I If mode 2 does not start, keep ignition switch OFF for approximately 10 seconds or more, then try
again.
ERASING SELF-DIAGNOSIS RESULTS
1. Fully depress accelerator pedal in mode 2 (self-diagnosis), and keep it fully depressed for 10 seconds or
more. ( Self-diagnosis results are erased.
I Release accelerator pedal, and confirm that the self-diagnosis results are erased.
I Turn OFF ignition switch to automatically go back to mode 1.

SELF-DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION QR20DE

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Indication

MODE 1: BULB CHECK
I Malfunction indicator lamp comes ON when ignition switch is
turned ON (engine not started). It goes OFF after engine start.

MODE 1: MALFUNCTION WARNING

I When fail-safe function is operating with engine running, or
when a malfunction is detected by self-diagnosis, the system
goes into malfunction warning mode. It warns driver by light-
SAT652J ing up MIL in combination meter.
I There are two types of MIL indications: Trip 1 indication and
trip 2 indication. For the latter, MIL will not light up during trip
1.
I For description of warning items and trip, refer to EC-9.

MODE 2: SELF-DIAGNOSIS
I In this mode, malfunctioning circuit is indicated as a blinking
pattern by MIL. (Standing for code No.)
I The code No. “0000” is indicated when no malfunction is
detected.

ECD0695D

MODE 2: HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR MONITOR

I In this mode, condition of air/fuel ratio is indicated as a blink-
ing pattern by MIL.
I After warming-up, bring and keep engine speed at 2,000 rpm
constantly. Under this condition, check if MIL blinks 5 times or
more within 10 seconds. (Note that air/fuel ratio feedback con-
trol is working even during idling.)
I With air/fuel ratio feedback control ON,
When heated oxygen sensor output is high (rich): MIL OFF
When heated oxygen sensor output is low (lean): MIL ON
EFJ0041D I With air/fuel ratio feedback control clamped: MIL indicates the
condition immediately before clamping.
I With air/fuel ratio feedback control stopped: MIL OFF

Note 2: Number of trips varies depending on the item to be diagnosed.
CAUTION:
When malfunction is detected in some of the above self-diagnostic test items, related malfunctions may be detected in self-
diagnosis of systems other than engine. Therefore, malfunctions shall also be confirmed in self-diagnostic tests for sys-
tems other than engine.
Trip 1: If malfunction is detected by self-diagnosis while ignition switch is ON (engine is running) until it is turned OFF (This is defined
as “trip”), MIL is lit and normal diagnostic trouble code is recorded immediately after the detection.
Trip 2: If malfunction is detected by self-diagnosis for the first time in the first trip, tentative diagnostic trouble code is recorded. If
malfunction is detected again by self-diagnosis in the next trip (second trip) tentative diagnostic trouble code is recorded, MIL
is lit and normal diagnostic trouble code is recorded.
Timing display of self-diagnosis results
I For items of trip 1, timing “0” is displayed immediately after detection of malfunction.
I For items of trip 2, when malfunction is detected for the first time (trip 1), timing “1t” is displayed. When
malfunction is detected again in the next trip (trip 2), it is displayed as “0”. Accumulative counting is per-
formed at the end of warming-up operation.
Conditions to turn off MIL
I After normal status is recovered, diagnosed items of MIL marked with * turn OFF when ignition switch is
turned ON (engine starts) next time.
I Regarding other diagnosed items, after normal status is recovered, turn ignition switch OFF once, then
erase the results.

INSPECTION OF IDLE SPEED, IGNITION TIMING,
AND AIR/FUEL RATIO QR20DE

CO/HC Concentration Inspection

Vehicle uses air/fuel ratio feedback system with learning function.
Because a wide range of compensation is available, no CO/HC
concentration adjustment is necessary.
I Warm up engine to normal operating temperature. Check that
idle speed and ignition timing are within specifications. Then,
check CO/HC concentration with a CO/HC meter.
I When measured values are outside specifications, check con-
dition of air/fuel ratio feedback in the following steps:

I Select “HO2S1 MNTR (B1)”, “HO2S1 MNTR (B2)” in

data monitor mode.
I Run engine at approximately 2,000 rpm, and confirm
that “RICH” and “LEAN” are displayed alternately.

EC-20
THROTTLE VALVE CLOSED POSITION LEARNING
AND IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING QR20DE

Outline
If connector of electric throttle control or ECM is disconnected,
perform throttle valve closed position learning after repair. This is
because closed throttle position (throttle position sensor output
value when throttle is fully-closed) needs to be learned. Also, if
electric throttle control or ECM is replaced, vehicle system must
learn minimum required idle air volume requirement. Thus, after
replacing any of these components, it is necessary to perform
throttle valve closed position learning and idle air volume learning.
Note that idle air volume learning is equivalent to idle-based speed
adjustment by conventional IAS (Idle Adjust Screw).

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning

I Turn ignition switch from ON to OFF. (After turning ignition
switch OFF, keep the status for approximately 5 seconds.)
I At this time, confirm that throttle valve operates. (Operation
sound is heard.)
I The above operation completes learning process.
CAUTION:
Closed position learning cannot be executed by CONSULT-II.

Idle Air Volume Learning

I Complete throttle valve closed position learning.
I Warm-up engine and transaxle to normal operating
temperature. (Coolant temperature is approximately 70
to 99°C)
I Set selector lever to P or N position. Make sure that
engine is free of electrical loads, such as air conditioner,
power steering pump, and other electrical components.
I Touch “START” at “IDLE AIR VOL LEARN” of work support
mode.
SEF452Y CAUTION:
I It takes approximately 20 seconds to complete the learn-
ing. Do not turn ignition switch OFF during the process.
I When learning is completed, “DONE” is displayed.
I Confirm that learning is completed by “IDL A/V LEARN” on
data monitor mode.
Learning completed: DONE
Learning not completed: YET
I Confirm that ignition timing and idle speed are within specifi-
cations.
I When ignition timing or idle speed is outside specifications,
perform idle air volume learning again.
SEF454Y I Complete throttle valve closed position learning.
I Warm up engine and transaxle to normal operating tem-
perature (coolant temperature is 70 to 99°C).
I Set selector lever to “P” or “N” position. Make sure that
engine is free of electrical load, such as air conditioner,
power steering pump, and other electrical components.
I To start idle air volume learning, refer to the following.
