Ch7 Temporary Joints (Part1)

The document discusses bolted joints and summarizes the following key points: 1) Bolted joints are used to temporarily attach mechanical components and allow for disassembly, while welded joints provide permanent attachment. 2) The document covers types of fasteners used in bolted joints like bolts, nuts, and screws. It also defines common terminology used like thread forms. 3) Methods for analyzing simple bolted joints with axial loads are presented, including calculating tensile stress in bolts based on load and bolt area. Problems applying these methods to example joint configurations are also provided.

Contents
 Bolted joint –simple analysis,
 eccentric load perpendicular to the axis of the bolt,
eccentric load parallel to the axis of bolt.

At the end of this chapter, students should be able to,

 Compute the dimensions of the bolts for simple bolted joint.

 Compute the dimensions of the bolts for eccentrically
loaded Bolted joint.

Introduction Bolted Joint
 Most engineering applications need the mechanical
components to be attached/connected to each
other temporarily or permanently.

 Welded joints are used where two parts of

components are to be attached
permanently. whereas bolted joints are used
where two components are to be attached
temporarily.

Types of Fasteners (Bolted joints)

4
Some Common Terminologies
 Fasteners is the common word used for temporary joints. Some
examples of fasteners are bolts, nuts, studs, screws etc.
 The most commonly used type of thread form is ISO metric thread for
fasteners.
 ISO metric threads are designated by the letter M followed by
diameter x pitch.
◦ Fine Series >> M8 x 2 (indicates 8 mm diameter with pitch 2 mm)
◦ Coarse series >> M8 (Only diameter is referred)

BOLTED JOINTS

 How can one decide the size and number of

bolts used in certain applications?

 Is the type of load and its direction important

in selection of bolt size?

 Is there a common design procedure available

for bolted joints?

Bolted joints under various loading conditions

• Bolted joints are designed under both static and dynamic loading
conditions.

• Here in this chapter, we restrict our discussion related to static loading

condition.

Problems (Simple analysis of Bolts)
The cylinder head of a steam engine is subjected to a steam pressure of 0.7 Mpa. It
is held in position by means of 12 bolts. A soft copper gasket is used to make the
joint leak proof. The effective diameter of the cylinder is 300 mm. Find the size of

the bolt so that the stress in the bolt is not to exceed 100 Mpa.

bolts. The inner diameter of the pressure vessel is 200 mm and is subjected to an
internal pressure of 10 Mpa. Selecting carbon steel C40 (yield stress = 328.6 Mpa)
as the material for the bolts, determine the size of bolts, considering initial tension
