Seam 5 Activity 3

This document contains questions about ship handling principles including speed over ground, speed over water, effects of current, and an example calculation to determine current speed based on a ship's trip upstream and downstream. Key concepts covered are the relationships between speed over ground, speed over water, and current; how current affects these speeds; and using speed over water for collision avoidance situations.

Questions
Find the answer:

1. What is the speed over ground and speed over water in these three conditions ?
speed over water for all the three conditions

2. All other conditions being same but now we have 2.0 knots current from ahead.
What will be speed over water and over ground?
speed over water

3. All other conditions being same but now we have 2.0 knots current from astern.
What will be speed over water and over ground?
speed over water

4. Speed of the ship.. What it is ?

Speed of the ship has a non-linear relationship with fuel consumption; the ship
which will go slower will have fewer air emissions than a ship going faster. Speed
of the ship has an impact at both design level and operational level.

5. What is the Speed through water and speed over ground?

Speed over water is the distance traveled in one hour with respect to water.
Similarly speed over ground is the distance traveled in one hour with respect to
ground.

6. Can you interpret of speed through water.

Current has nothing to do with speed over water. Irrespective of how much current
you have, the speed over water will remain same.

7. Explain the speed through water for collision avoidance.

If there is risk of collision and if you follow just the radar, It will give you a
false sign that the situation is a crossing situation. This is because the radar
would be showing the course made good of both the ships.

When we use speed over water the same situation would look as a head on situation.
That is because when we use speed over water, it does not consider the effect of
current on the vessel.

8. A Cruise ship traveled 150 n.m with the current, and then turned around and
traveled back, spending 05 hrs and 30 min on its trip. Find the speed of the
current if the speed of the ship in still water is 55 n.m/hour. Upstream and
downstream velocities.

150=(55-c)(5.5-t)

5.5-t=150/(55-c)

-t=(150-302.5+5.5c)/(55-c)

t=(152.5-5.5c)/(55-c)

150=(55+c)t using t found about

150=(55+c)(152.5-5.5c)/(55-c)

8250-150c=8387.5-302.5c+152.5c-5.5c^2

5.5c^2=137.5
c^2=25

c=5

So the current is 5nm/hr.
