STATEMENT FROM DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS ON THE DEMOLITION OF THE TURBINE STRUCTURE

AT THE FORMER CRAWFORD POWER GENERATING STATION

“Protecting the public health and safety of residents in all communities remains the City’s top priority. Following a
lengthy evaluation and structural analysis of the remaining buildings on the site of the former Crawford Power
Generating Station, the Department of Buildings (DOB) has determined that, in the interest of public safety, the turbine
structure is unsound and needs to be removed immediately. The contractor, Heneghan Wrecking, has submitted a dust
mitigation plan for the removal work, which has undergone a thorough review by the IEPA and the Chicago Department
of Public Health. City inspectors and a third-party environmental consultant will remain onsite to monitor the demolition
activity, and the surrounding community will be provided with status updates on this portion of the demolition. The City
will continue working with and updating the local community as the process moves forward.”

Some likely questions to be prepared to answer:

Why does this have to happen now? Why can't it wait? If it is so urgent, why must it happen now versus a couple weeks AGO?
Why can't it wait a few more days/a few more weeks to ensure thorough community notice/engagement?
Is the alderman on board? Has he been fully briefed?

Subject: Hilco Demo Statement

All,

Here's a draft statement on the turbine demolition at the Hilco site with a couple highlights. Did we want to mention
the asbestos mitigation plan? It's not currently on the microsite. I also added a line about community engagement but
highlighted Hilco to confirm it would be Hilco that engages the community.

After a lengthy review of the problematic smoke stack implosion demolition that occurred on April 11, 2020 at the
former Crawford Power Generating Station, and a structural analysis of the remaining buildings on the site, the
Department of Buildings has determined that, in the interest of public safety, the turbine structures are unsound and
need to be demolished immediately. The demolition contractor, Heneghan Wrecking, has submitted a dust mitigation
plan and an asbestos mitigation plan, which have been thoroughly reviewed by the City, and building and health
inspectors as well as a third-party environmental consultant will continue their presence onsite to monitor the
demolition activity. The developer, Hilco Redevelopment Partners, LLC, will provide the surrounding community with
status updates on this portion of the demolition, and will engage community stakeholders prior to any future activity,
demolition or otherwise, on the site.

Best,
Mimi
