‘Autuma really isa bonanza for erocheters~ there's
inspiration absolutely everywhere in the shape of
warm colours, the falling temperatures necessitating
{uick-hook layers and, ofcourse, the shops starting
set out their Christmas displays. Yes, yes for many
people it's to early for that particular Cword, bt for
us crafters isthe ideal time to sit with hook and yarn
and lovingly produce the perfect gift. Luckily we havea plethora ofbeautiful
designs for You.hi8 month, starting with the fabulous free booklet of
exclusive deabration designs by our own columnist, Matt Farci
Ithat wasn feltive enough for you, this issue is fullof magical colour
inspired by the fklore and fairy tales of Northera Europe. The Wilderness
Capeby Michelle Whit and Ginny amigurumi doll capture the childlike
magic of Hans Chfistian Andersen’ tales, while the Blossom Cowl and
Eclectic Jumper gould be straight out ofa Russian princess’ wardrobe.
Theriot ofcolovr isalso complemented by pom-poms galore, seen on
Tracey Todhunter’s luxurious scarf, Ruby MeGrath’s funky tree skirt and
Vicki Brown's super cute ankle socks. In fact, never mind the gifts ~ you'll
want to keep al ofthese to yourselves!
| do believe it's important to practise mindfulness and selfeareduring the
lead-up to Christmas, so prescribe a wonderful and whimsical make in the
shape ofPollevie¥ incredible Polcbied wrap! The colours and motifs sing folk
style tome, and it perfect for using odd balls ofstash, And of course, we have
part three of Jane Crowfoot’ stunning Climbing Rose CAL. Ifyou haven't
already, share your progress online on Facebook and Instagram — we ove to
see your riffs on Inside Crochet designs. Until next time, happy hooking!

SHAPING, COLOURWORK & TENSION
‘Once you've learned simole shaping stitches, you can create almost any garment - and add
Indifferent colours as you go with our simple technique. Make sure to check your tension first
though, or your finished piece could be completely the wrong size!

ANEW COLOUR
‘Tojoinin anew colour (or anew ball

fasten off the old yarn and then attach
the new colour witha slp stitch into the
top of the last stitch made. However,
fora neater join, you can also work the
colour change as follows:
Work the last stitch in the colour you

TENSION/GAUGE
‘Atension swatch isused to
ensure that you are working
at the tension called forin the
ppattorn tis essential to check this,
‘otherwise your finished garment
islkaly to bethe wrong size!
Crochet a small square of just over
10x ]0cmn/4 x in in the main yarn
and stitch used in the pattern, then
‘count and calculate the average
‘amount of stitches per cm.
‘Chain afew more stitches and
‘work more rows than the tension
inthe pattern suggests youll
need for this size, Once youhave
‘completed the swatch, use a
measuring tape or ruler, place
‘some pins at and 10 anditake
some average measurements
= count how many stitches and
rows to l0cm at different points
cover the swatch,
IF you find youhave more stitches
per cm than indicated in the
pattern. then your tension is too
tight and you need to work more
loosely. The best way todo this,
isto increase the size of hook
youreusing by a quarter orhalf
‘millimetre until the tension is as
closeas you can getit If there are
‘fewer stitches than required, then
yyouare crocheting too loosely,
‘and youneed to decrease the size
‘of hook used inthe same way.
