A comparison-and-contrast essay is a type of writing that explains the similarities and


differences between at least two ideas, items, or experiences.
A cause-and-effect essay is a type of writing that explains how things that happen are
linked. A cause makes something happen. An effect is what happens as a result of a cause.

A. DIRECTIONS: Choose a novel with a character you are familiar with. Use your
knowledge of the novel and character to complete each chart below. In the first chart,
compare and contrast the character’s experiences with your own. In the second chart,
record your observations about the causes and effects of events in the novel. Add
additional rows if you need them.
