ORAL MEDICATION

INTRODUCTION:
The oral route is preferred for administering/medications to children whenever
possible. Because of the ease of administration of oral medications. It must be
dissolved or suspended in liquid preparations. Although, some children are able
to swallow or chew solid medication at an early age, solid preparations are not
recommended for young children because of the danger of aspiration.

DEFINITION:
Oral medication is the process of administering prescribed medications orally.

PURPOSE:
 To provide a medication that has systemic effect on gastrointestinal tract.

ARTICLES REQUIRED:
 Tablets, powders with respective container and proper label.
 Syrups in bottle tight cover.
 Mortar and pestle.
 Measuring cup/glass/katori.
 Treatment chart.
 Small mackintosh with towel.
 Small plastic cups or paper bags.
 Spoon.
 Water.
 Kidney tray/paper bag.

STEPS OF PROCEDURE:
 Explain the procedure to child/parents.
 Determine Physician’s orders and patient.
 Assess the medical history, allergy history, diet history.
 Gather physical examination and laboratory data.
 Assemble all the articles in tray near bedside.

 Check the sixteen’s Rights of medication administration.
 Right Patient regarding to the patient right to be administered a
medication.
 Right Dose -Right and enough dose
 Right Route -Medication should be taken on it’s real time matter of
way
 Right Time -Should be according on right time.
 Right Documentation -Right input of information, data and details.
 Right Drug
 Right Preparation
 Right Handling
 Right Storage
 Right Expiry Date
 Right Discard
 Right Administration
 Right Explanation
 Right Order
 Right Patient Chart
 Right Universal Precaution

 Calculate correct dose. Take time and double check calculations.


 Check the expiry date of medicine.
 Place all medicines in one cup, if child has difficulty in swallowing, crush
tablets in mortal and pestle (Do not crush enteric coated tablets)

SYRUP:
 For preparing liquids, shake bottle gently and hold medication cup to the
eye level and pour medicine to desired level in measuring cup.
 Assist child to comfortable position.
 Spread towel/draw sheet under the chin.
 Place medication into the patient’s mouth against cheeks and provide
water to swallow or give dissolved medicines or liquid medicines to
swallow.
 Give child a flavored ice pops or small candy in between administration
of different drugs.
 For medications with unpleasant taste or smell, have child pinch the nose
and drink the medicine through a straw.

 If dose is less (For Infants- Take the infant in mother’s lap in upright
position. Give the medication syrup directly in mouth or with dropper or
in needle less syringe 0.25ml-0.50ml at a time.)

TABLET:
 Take the tablet, make powder if baby is less than 3 years, give the
medication powder with water/juice/milk.
 Ensure that the medicine is swallowed.

 Clean, dry and replace the articles.

 Record the medication administration with date, time and signature.

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
 Take into considerations the 16 rights.

 Do not give water after administering cough syrups.

 While pouring the liquid medicine, do not pour it from the label side.

 For giving medicine, hold the child in semi reclining position to prevent
aspiration.

 Child may be allowed to suck medication through disposable syringe or


nipple.

 Once medication is emptied in patient’s mouth, blow a small puff of air


on to the face to elicit swallowing reflex.

 Check for the expiry date.

 Maintain the child’s comfort.
