Math 7: Understanding Angles

This lesson plan teaches students about supplementary angles in mathematics. The objectives are for students to find supplements of angles, solve problems involving supplementary angles, and apply prior knowledge to new understanding. The lesson defines supplementary angles as two angles whose measures sum to 180 degrees. Students practice finding supplements by subtracting from 180 degrees and solving word problems. They generalize that two angles are supplementary if their sum is 180 degrees and supplements are found by subtraction. An evaluation assesses student understanding of finding supplements and identifying supplementary angle pairs.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7

Third Grading Period

Content Standard: Demonstrates understanding of key points of geometry of shapes and sizes, and geometric
relationships.

Performance Standard: Is able to create models of plane figures and formulate and solve accurately authentic
problems involving sides.

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
1. find the supplement of each angle.
2. solve problems involving supplementary angles.
3. value accumulated knowledge as means of new understanding.

II. Subject Matter: “Pairs of Angles – Supplementary Angles”; Math VII, Our World of Math/Geometry 3,
pages 281-285 / 65-70. MELC’s, M7GE-11lb-1.
III. Procedure:
A. Preparation
 Opening Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting of Classroom Rules
 Listen attentively
 Raise your hand if you want to answer
 Maintain social distancing
 Always wear your face mask
 Present the Objectives for today’s lesson.

B. Review
 Questions:
1. When can we say that the two angles are complementary angles?
2. What is the complementary angle of 60 digress?
3. How do you find or solve the complementary angles?

C. Lesson Proper
 SHOW A VIDEO
 “Supplementary Angles”
 Discuss the definition of supplementary angles.
 The definition of supplementary angles states that,
“If two angles are supplementary then the sum of their measures is 180 digress.”

Consider the two pairs of angles below.

105˚ 75˚
A B

m∠ A is 105˚
m∠ B is 75˚

∠A and ∠B are supplementary angles because the sum of their measures 105˚ + 75˚ = 180˚
When the two angles are supplementary, we can say that one angle is the supplement of the other.
∠A is the supplement of ∠B or we can also say that,
∠B is the supplement of ∠A.
Two supplementary angles can be either adjacent or non-adjacent.
For example, Look at the diagram shown below.

C m∠ ABC is 53˚
m∠ CBD is 127˚

127˚
53˚

A B D

∠ABC and ∠CBD are supplementary angles because the sum of their measures 53˚ + 127˚ = 180˚.
∠ABC is the supplement of ∠CBD or we can also say that,
∠CBD is the supplement of ∠ABC.

Note that the definition of supplementary angles can also be stated the other way around.

“If the sum of the measures of the two angles is 180˚ then the angles are supplementary angles”.

 How can we find or solve supplementary angles?

- We can solve its supplementary angle by subtracting the given angle from 180˚.

Illustrative Examples:
1.
R

Q P S

∠QPR and ∠RPS are supplementary angles.

Find the measure of ∠QPR, if m ∠RPS = 56˚
Solution:
m ∠QPR + m ∠RPS = 180˚
m ∠QPR + 56˚ = 180˚
m ∠QPR = 180˚ - 56˚
m ∠QPR = 124˚

2. Solve for ∠2.

115˚

1 2

Solution:
m ∠1 + m ∠2 = 180˚
115˚ + m ∠2 = 180˚
m ∠2 = 180˚ - 115˚
m ∠2 = 65˚
3. ∠1 and ∠2 are supplementary angles.
Find the measure of ∠2, if m ∠1 = 145˚.

Solution:
m ∠1 + m ∠2 = 180˚
145˚ + m ∠2 = 180˚
m ∠2 = 180˚ - 145˚
m ∠2 = 35˚

D. Board work/Practice
Determine the supplement of the given angle by filling up the table.

Angle Supplement
1. 30˚ 150˚
2. 75˚ 105˚
3. 40.5˚ 139.5˚
4. 98˚ 82˚
5. 107˚ 73˚
