Laser Communication with ASK Modulation

1) The document discusses digital data transmission using lasers, specifically employing optical amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation. 2) ASK is a digital modulation technique that uses discrete amplitude levels of a carrier signal to represent binary data. At the transmitter, a modulator shifts the amplitude of the laser carrier signal based on the binary data. 3) At the receiver, a demodulator with the same carrier signal is used to detect the amplitude levels and recover the original binary data by filtering out the carrier frequency. 4) Directly modulating lasers can support very high data transmission rates for applications but suffers from chirp and other nonlinear effects that limit transmission distances and bit rates.

Amplitude shift keying - ASK is the digital modulation
technique, which uses a sinusoidal wave to represent two
or more discrete amplitude levels. The number of levels
depends on the number of bits transmitted corresponding
to a single signal. For a binary message sequence, two
levels are used, one for bit 1and other for bit 0. Thus the
modulated waveform consists of bursts of a sinusoidal
signal of different amplitude.

of radio signal. In this technique the base band signal
m(t) is multiplied by the carrier signal C(t) .Here a
modulator is used to shift the amplitude of the carrier
signal as per the digital binary sequence.
