Windows 10: What is new now?
Windows 10 is the succession of the Windows 8.1 operating system
developed by Microsoft and intended to continue the Windows NT
Family of operating system. The MS Windows 10 Operating System
was launched for public utilization on 29th day of July, 2015.
There are recent updates on this Operating System that allow users;
customize their personal computers, be more creative with their PC
and increase the Windows security.
Find below the new updates that have been made to the Windows
10 OS;

1. Select your favorite color for Windows: You can select

between the light mode option or Dark mode option to
make your apps stand out in Windows. To do this, proceed
with the prompts below;
At the bottom left, tap on the Start ( icon that
looks like window pane) icon and tap Settings

Select Personalization and click Color .

Choose either the Dark mode or light mode under

the “Choose your color” option.
Note: In the above screenshot, you will see the “You need to
activate Windows before you can personalize your PC” prompt, this
means that you will not be able to personalize your personal
computer if you are yet to activate your Windows. Don’t forget that
choosing your desired color for Windows is among the ways you can
personalize your PC. In the later part of this guide, you will learn
about ways you can activate your Windows 10.

2. Keep regular tabs on your website tabs: If you’ve got a

webpage you usually frequent, you can pin that website on
your taskbar for quick reference. From the taskbar, hover
the mouse over the website you have pin to see a quick
preview of all the tabs that you have opened. In Microsoft
Edge (the default browser in Windows), you can pin your
most visited website to the taskbar by following the steps
below on your Microsoft Edge browser;
Navigate to Settings and more… or press the Alt
+ F shortcut on your keyboard when the Microsoft
Edge browser is open.
Click on More tools and select Pin to taskbar
.
3. Jump between pages of websites you have opened
using the “Alt + Tab” shortcut:
With your fingers, you can press the Alt key, and
click on Tab to flip through all the pages you have
opened on Windows and on tabs that you have
opened in Microsoft Edge browser. Once the
pages are displayed, you will be able to move
between opened tabs with the aid of the Tab key.
Remove your hand from the Alt- key once you
have seen the page you want to open.
4. Go Passwordless with Microsoft account on your PC:
Improve your device’s security by removing the password
when you are signing in to Windows on Microsoft accounts
on your computer. To do this, follow the steps below;
a. At the bottom left, click on the Start ( icon that
looks like window pane) icon and tap Settings
b. Click on Accounts , tap on the Sign-in options
, then enable (ON) the “Require Windows Hello
Sign-in for Microsoft accounts

5. Access Notification settings from the Taskbar: To

decide where your notifications will show up and ways to
sort them out, click Notification at the bottom right-side
of the screen and tap Manage Notifications displayed on
the taskbar.
6. Deploy the Snip & Sketch feature to capture, mark up
and share pictures: The Screen sketch feature is now
referred to as Snip & Sketch. Launch the Snip & Sketch to
take a snip of what is on your PC’s screen or to mark up an
existing image and share it. From the Search space
(located at the bottom left anywhere you are on the
screen), enter Snip & Sketch (you will start getting
suggestions of what you are looking for before you finish
typing the word), then choose Snip & Sketch from the
result displayed to launch the app. For quick snip, use any
of your fingers to click on the Windows logo key +
Shift+ S. The screen of your computer will get dark and the
cursor will be displayed as cross. Select a point and left-
click the cursor. Then proceed to highlight that area that
you wish to capture by moving the cursor. The captured
area is displayed right on the screen. The snipped image
will be saved to temporal memory area called clipboard,
and will be ready for pasting into a document or an email. If
you wish to edit the snipped image, click on the notification
that shows just after you have made your snip. The Snip &
Sketch app gives options to save, copy, or share and also
has a pen, eraser and a highlighter, all with variable line
widths. Alternatively, you can also download the Skitch
App from https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5705-
skitch.html. The Skitch app for Windows is best for markup,
screenshot and to annotate images with arrows, text and
shapes. Many of the screenshots you will see in this guide
were taken from my PC using the Skitch App for Windows.
7. Make items and stuffs on your PC’s screen get bigger:
If it is only the text on the screen that you plan to make
bigger, click on Windows logo , click on Settings ,
select Ease of Access , tap Display and just adjust
the slider you will see under “ Make Texts bigger.” If your
plan is to get everything bigger (and not just text), you will
see a drop-down menu under “ Make everything bigger”
where you can choose an option.
8. Increase the visibility of the pointer: If you are finding it
difficult to identify the pointer on the screen, you can
decide to change its color or make it a little bigger or very
big to improve visibility. To do this, click on Windows logo
, click on Settings , select Ease of Access and
choose Cursor & Pointer.
9. Use Emoji anywhere you are on keyboard: You can
express your feelings wherever you are, and however you
wish to, by using the Emoji on your keyboard. To bring the
Emoji panel on keyboard, click the Windows pane +

Windows 10 installation Steps on your
computer
System Requirement for Windows 10 installation on PC
Be reminded that if your computer doesn’t meet the specifications
highlighted below, you won’t be able to install the Windows 10
Operating System or you might not really have a good experience on
Windows if you find your ways around the whole installation process.
The following are the basic requirements for installing Windows10 on
your computer;
- Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or System on a Chip (SoC)
- Random Access Memory (RAM): 1 Gigabyte memory will
suffice for 32bits computers, and 2 Gigabyte memory is okay
for 64bits computers.
- Size of Hard drive: 32 Gigabyte or more.
- Graphics card: DirectX 9 graphics card or later version with
WDDM 1.0 driver.
- Display: 800 X 600
- Stable Internet connection: Downloading features and
updates require stable internet.
Updating the Windows 10
In Windows 10, you can opt to get information about updates, and
how you desire to be get such updates. This is to get your PC
running securely and smoothly. To manage options, click on the
Start menu, navigate to Settings , select Update & Security
and click on Windows Update .
Having issues installing Windows Updates?
There may be more than one reason why your computer is unable to
update to the most recent edition of Windows 10. The tips below
might help you troubleshoot your computer where it is unable to
install updates. However, before you start anything at all, make sure
that your computer is plugged to a stable source of power and
connected to a good internet. Also, before you carry out any of the
tips below, ensure you backup your files properly. You can slot in a
USB drive inside your computer to copy your important files – this is
a simple backup strategy.
- Free up spaces on your drive to run update: It might be
that your computer doesn’t have enough space left. For an
update on a 32bits computer, you need about 16BG of free
space, and 20GB free space for a 64-bit operating system. If
your computer has a small hard drive, you might have to insert
a USB drive to update your computer.
- Restart your computer to apply the updates you have
installed: Sometimes, updating your Windows may require
that you restart your computer to begin the process. Before you
restart your PC, make sure to save all your works and close all
the applications you opened. To restart your PC, click on the
Windows logo , tap Power and choose either Update
and restart or Update and shutdown.
- Run the Windows update once again: Even if some
updates have been downloaded, more updates may still be
available for downloading. To check which update is left to be
downloaded and then download them, go to Settings , tap
Update & Security , click on Windows Update and click
on Check for Updates. Proceed to download and then install
any new update.
- Detach any external hardware from your computer: Some
hardware plugged into your computer is not essential for basic
function of the computer. Remove these external hardware and
try running the update again to see if the problem can be
resolved.
- Update important third party hardware: If you have
previously added hardware to your device, you can check for
third-party driver updates and installation instructions from the
website of the hardware manufacturer. Update any driver, and
you can then try running the updates again to check if the issue
can be resolved.
- Check for errors on the device manager:
Enter device manager inside the search box on your
taskbar, and then click on Device Manager from the
prompted result.
In the pop-up window, check any device that has a
yellow exclamation mark next to it. (You might need to
choose each to see the devices list.) Click on the
name of the device.
Click on Action , and then select any of the
options: Update driver or Uninstall to fix the errors.

How to stop PC from updating (pausing updates

temporarily)
While it is not possible to pause updates completely because
updating your Windows helps to keep your computer safe and
secure, updates will need to be installed and downloaded eventually,
regardless of your update settings. You can pause the updates
temporarily from being downloaded and installed by following the
steps below. Be reminded that once the pause limit has been
exceeded, you will have to install the latest updates before you will
be able to pause updates again.
In the October 2020 Update (version 20H2) of the Windows 10, or in
version 1809 for Pro Edition or Enterprise Edition, Click Start
> Settings >Update & Security >Windows Update . And
then select any of the options below;
- Choose “Pause updates for 7 days .”
- Click on “Advanced options .” Then, within the Pause
updates section, click on the drop down menu and indicate a
date that you want the update to resume.

How to ensure your computer restarts to install

updates at a convenient time
To finish installing your update, your computer will need to restart.
Windows will attempt to restart your PC when you are not using your
computer. If it cannot restart, you will be asked to schedule the
restart at a more convenient time. Or you can even schedule the
restart at any time you want by following the steps below;

1. Click “Start ” > “Settings ” >Update & Security

>”Windows Update ” > Windows Update .
2. Click Schedule the restart and select a more convenient
time.

Active hours can be set to ensure that automatic restarts is

scheduled for updates only and it takes place when you are not
using your computer.

How to remove an already installed update

Follow the steps below if you wish to remove any update that you
have previously installed;

- Click Start button > navigate to Settings >Update &

Security >Windows Update >View Update history
and then click on the Uninstall Updates option
- Choose the update that you wish to uninstall and then tap
Uninstall.
How to see installed updates
You can view which update has been installed and when the updates
was installed from the update history. In addition, you will be able to
remove some updates that you think you don’t need, although it is
not advisable you remove installed updates unless there is a need
for it. To remove installed update, follow the steps below;

Click Start > Settings >Update & Security >Windows

Update > Windows Update View Update history
Note: It is recommended that you keep your computer plugged into
power source when you are not using it. This way, you can be
assured that the computer will complete the update even when
updates are installed outside the battery active hours. Windows
update don’t necessarily use more battery power than other system
processes.
ACTIVATING WINDOWS 10
The purpose of activating Windows 10 is to make sure your copy of
Windows 10 is actually authentic and that your copy of Windows has
not been used on more devices than the terms of the Microsoft
Software License allows.
Checking your activation status
First, you might want to know if your copy of Windows 10 has been
activated and linked to your Microsoft account.
It is important that you link your Microsoft account to the Windows 10
license on your computer. Linking the Microsoft account on your
computer with your digital license will allow you to reactivate your
Windows using the Activation troubleshooter anytime you make a
significant change to hardware on your computer.
To check the activation status on your Windows 10, click on the Start
button, and then tap Settings > navigate to Update &
Security > choose Activation . You will see your activation
status listed next to Activation.
Linking Microsoft account on Windows 10
Proceed with the steps below to properly link with your Microsoft
account on Windows 10;

1. Sign in on your computer as an admin in order to add your

account. To check whether you are actually utilizing an
administrator account, click on Start , > tap Settings ,
click on Accounts and tap “Your info .“ When you
click on the “Your info” link, you will see the Administrator
written beneath your name. You should create an admin
account in case you are not an admin.
2. Confirm whether the administrator account is same with your
Microsoft account by confirming if there is actually an email
address shown above Administrator . If you can see an
email address above the administrator , it is a Microsoft
account. Else, if you cannot see an email address, then it is a
local account with which you have logged in. You can create
a Microsoft account if you don’t have one.
3. Once it is ascertained you are an administrator, using your
Microsoft account, simply navigate to the Activation page,
click on Add an account option , input your Microsoft
account and password, > tap Sign in .

After you have successfully added your Microsoft account, on

the Activatio-n page you will be able to see the message
“Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your
Microsoft account .”

Various methods of activating Windows 10

Activating your own version of Windows 10 is not a herculean task. It
requires either a product key (which is a 25-character) or a digital
license depending on how your Windows 10 edition was obtained.
Without obtaining a product key or a digital license, it will not be
possible to activate your version of Windows.
▪ A digital license (also refer to as digital entitlement in some
Windows 10 edition) is an activation system that won’t necessarily
ask users to use any product key for Windows activation.
▪ Using a product key involves a 25-charcter code that can be
used to activate your version of Windows. Your product key will
appear like PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-
XXXXX.
When you have concluded on the activation means that you wish to
use, you should follow the due process by clicking on “ Activating
using a product key” or “Activating using a digital license.” The
tips below will help you decide on which activation method is good
for your laptop;
- Digital license is advisable if you switch to Windows 10 from
a healthy computer running a true edition of Windows. If you
have previously associated your MSA (Microsoft account) with
the digital license, the digital license will be contained in the
MSA.
- Also, Digital License is preferred if you procure a Windows
10 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store app. When you are
purchasing a Windows 10 upgrade from the Microsoft Store
app, you will be sent an email for confirmation. And it is the
confirmation email that will contain your Digital license.
- If you purchase a personal computer that came pre-installed
with Windows 10, it is advisable to use Product Key for
Windows activation. You should look out for your product key
either on the COA (authentication certificate) or on the
packaging that came with your PC.
- If your Windows was procured from a retailer that is
authorized by Microsoft, it is advisable that a Product Key be
required for activation. The product key will be found on the
label inside the box.
- If you get your Windows 10 from the online Microsoft Store,
Product Key should be used for activation. You will see the
product key in the confirmation mail that accompanied the
order history.

Buying license for Windows 10

In case you don’t even have a digital license or product key, then you
should prepare to purchase a copy of Digital license once your
computer finishes installation. See the steps below;

- Click on the Start icon.

- Click on Settings , select Update & Security and tap
Activation
- Click on Go to Store .
The “Go to Store” link will launch the Microsoft Store app where you
can get a genuine copy of Windows 10 digital license.

How to activate Windows 10 using a digital license

Upon getting a new PC, digital licenses are normally associated with
hardware and are usually linked with your Microsoft account; hence,
there is absolutely nothing you will be looking for on your computer.
All that you have to do is connect your computer to the web and then
access your Microsoft account.
- For first time installation and if you are activating on a
new computer or motherboard: With a digital license
associated with a Microsoft account, you can normally run
setup and bypass the product key requirement by tapping I
don’t have a product key . Windows will be activated
immediately you sign in to Microsoft account and you are on
the web.
- Activation after you reinstall Windows 10: If you are in
possession of a digital license for your computer, the same
version of Windows 10 can be reinstalled on the computer
without necessarily entering any product key. Ensure that your
Windows 10 is actually activated before you attempt to reinstall
it. To confirm, click on the Start button, tap Settings ,
select Update & Security and tap Activation . From
here, you can always confirm if your version of Windows has
actually been activated and that your Microsoft account has
been linked to your digital license.
- Reactivating your version of Windows after a significant
hardware change: Making a significant change to hardware
on your computer (such as when you replace the Motherboard
on your computer) might make your Windows lose activation
even if you have already activated it before. One thing you can
do to safeguard activation in preparation against any future
hardware change is to associate your Microsoft account with
your computer’s digital license. When you do this, you can
always reactivate your Windows by deploying the Activation
troubleshooter anytime you make an important hardware
change on your computer. To reactivate your model of
Windows 10 after an important hardware change, follow the
prompts below;
Note: Ensure that your computer is fully connected online when
you want to reactivate, and then proceed with the prompts to
use either a digital license or product key.
For digital license, simply run the Activation
Troubleshooter: Here, you will need to add your
MSA first and then link the account with the digital
license on your PC. Once your Microsoft account has
been linked, Windows can now be reactivated by
running the Activation Troubleshooter. This
troubleshooter will only be made available if your own
model of Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) has not
been activated.

To utilize Activation troubleshooter:

▪ Sign in to the PC as administrator.

▪ Click on the Start icon, tap Settings ,

select Update & Security , tap Activation
and click on Troubleshoot . The troubleshooter
will display that Windows can’t be activated on
your device .
▪ Click on I changed hardware on this device
recently , and then tap Next .
▪ Input the Microsoft account and password that is
joined to your computer, then click Sign in . It is
only the connected Microsoft account that can work
with the Activation trou-bleshooter.
▪ You will be prompted with a list of devices linked
with your Microsoft account, tick the checkbox that
is next to the “This is the device I’m using right
now.”
▪ Click Activate .
▪ If you cannot find the computer you are in
possession of in the result displayed, ensure that
you are actually signed in with the same Microsoft
account that you have associated with the
Windows10 digital license on your computer.

Use the product key in case no digital license is

available: If Windows10 was not pre-installed on your
computer when you bought it and you deployed
product key to upgrade to Windows10, then that
same product key will be needed after an important
hardware change on your computer. Click on the
Start icon, tap Settings , select Update &
Security , tap Activation and click on Change
Product Key , and input the product key.
Activating Windows 10 using a Product Key
Your product key is just a 25-character code, and it looks like;
PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
During the installation processes, you will be prompted to fill in the
product key. Or, after successful installation, to input the product
key, click on the Start icon, tap Settings , select Update &
Security , tap Activation , click Update product key and tap
on Change product key.
The “Change Product Key” option can be used to activate your
copy of Windows 10 if you are with a product key. Consider the
supplemental details below to help with activation in different
scenarios;
- When you are installing first time and if you are
activating on a new computer or motherboard: You will
need to have a genuine product key to activate your own
version of Windows 10 on a computer that has never been
activated before. At the same time, you will equally need to
have a valid product key if you are installing a model of
Windows10 that was not previously activated on the computer.
For instance, you will require a real product key in order to
have Windows10 Pro installed and activated on a computer
where Windows10 Home had been installed previously. During
the process of installation, you will be asked to input a genuine
product key. Once the installation has been completed,
Windows10 will then be activated automatically online. If you
want to verify activation status in Windows10, click on Start
symbol, tap Settings , select Update & Security then
tap Activation .
- Activate after reinstalling Windows 10: During
reinstallation, you will be requested to input a product key.
When you enter your product key, your version will be
activated. If you completed the setup and you forgot to enter
your product key, you can still do that. Click on the Start
button, tap Settings , select Update & Security , tap
Activation , click Update product key and tap on Change
product key.
REINSTALL WINDOWS10
If you are having issues with Windows10 on your computer or you
just want a new edition of Windows10 without having old apps or
files coming with the new Windows, you can just reinstall Windows10
to fix the system issue and return your computer to a cleaner state.
Note: Before you reinstall Windows, it is possible that the issue your
computer is having is one that is associated with disc space. Try to
free up some disc space and see if this resolves the problem. To free
up some disc space in Windows10, follow the prompts below;
Note: You can check the amount of disc space remaining on your
Windows computer by clicking on File Explorer found in the
taskbar, and then choose This PC found on the left. You will be able
to see the amount of disc space on your device under Devices and
drives .
How to free up space with Storage Sense on your
computer
Storage Sense can be used to remove temporary or unnecessary
files on your computer.
By turning on Storage Sense, you are telling the Windows to free up
space automatically by helping to delete files you don’t need, such
as files in the Recycle Bin and temporary files, especially when you
are low on disk space or at any interval you specify. The steps below
will teach you how to activate and configure Storage Sense, and how
to delete temporary files.
For individuals who might be unable to locate Storage Sense on their
computer, use the “Free up space with Disk Cleanup" discussed
below instead.
Follow the prompts below if you want to delete temporary files
with Storage Sense

1. Click Start , tap Settings , click on System and

select Storage .
2. Select Temporary files from the storage breakdown. Note:
If you are unable to see the Temporary files option,
click Show more categories .
3. Windows will use a few moments to determine what apps and
files are consuming the most disk space on your device.
4. Tap the items you plan to delete, and then click Remove files
. Each of the listed item will include a description.
Notes :
You may need to scroll down to select Recycle Bin and some other
settings. This is because these settings are not, by default, selected
for delete.
Click on the Recycle Bin in order to free up space that has been
taken up by files you have previously deleted. You should
understand that Windows moves your deleted files to the Recycle
Bin should you change your mind later and want them again. You
might be able to free up a sizeable amount of space by
choosing Recycle Bin to permanently remove files you have
previously deleted.
You can open your Recycle Bin from the desktop to view what is
inside the Recycle Bin before you empty the content. In case you are
unable to see Recycle Bin on your desktop, you can just enter the
word “recycle bin” inside the search bar on the taskbar, and then
click on it from the result displayed.
Follow the prompts below to turn on and configure Storage
Sense

1. Click Start , tap Settings , click on System and

select Storage .
2. From the Storage window, toggle on Storage Sense .

3. Click on the Configure storage sense or run it now menu

below the ON button
4. You will be taken to another window where you can choose
how often you plan for the Storage Sense to run.
5. Choose which of your files you want the Storage Sense to
automatically delete on your computer, then choose the
corresponding time intervals.
6. Scroll down and click on Clean now .
7. It will take some moments before Windows clean up your files
completely, and you will then see a prompt showing how
much disk space has been freed.

If your computer doesn't have Storage sense, the Disk Cleanup tool
can be used to remove system files and temporary files from your
computer.
- Inside the search box on your taskbar, enter disk cleanup ,
then click on it from the displayed results.
- Tap the check box that is next to the category of files that you
wish to delete. (To have a description of each file type, click on
the name.) By default, Temporary Internet Files,
Downloaded Program Files , and Thumbnails are selected.
Ensure that you clear the checkbox in case you don’t plan to
delete these files.
- If you wish to free up more space, click on Clean up system
files , and then choose the category of system files that you
wish to delete. Disk Cleanup will be used sometimes before it
computes the quantity of space that can be freed.
Note: If it has been less than 10 days that you upgraded to the new
Windows 10, you will see the previous copy of Windows listed as
one of the system files that you can delete. You can actually delete
this old Windows if you need more disc space on your computer, but
be reminded that this will delete your Windows.old folder, which
contains all the files that can give you the opportunity to access or go
back to the old Windows. Once you delete the old Windows version,
you will not be able to get it back, which means that you will not have
your old Windows version again.
- Once you have marked the types of files that you wish to
delete, click OK , and then choose Delete files from the
confirmation window to initiate the cleanup.
Important:
There is an option in the Disk Cleanup that will allow you
to compress your OS drive. Choosing this option will compress the
drive where Windows was installed, allowing you to have extra
space where other important updates can be installed. This process
will not delete the drive’s content, and you should be able to open

using your apps with convenience. There are many ways you can
personalize the Taskbar – pin your favorite to the Taskbar, change
the size and color, move the Taskbar around on the screen and
resize or rearrange the Taskbar buttons. The Taskbar can also be
locked to confirm the status of your battery, keep your options and to
momentarily minimize all opened programs so that you can take a
glance at your desktop.

Pin your most used app to the taskbar

You can pin any of your most used app directly to your taskbar for
easy access when you are on the desktop. You can also unpin the
app from the taskbar anytime you want. You can pin and unpin the
app from Start or the Jump List , which is a list of shortcuts to files,
folders and websites that you recently opened.
- Pinning an app from the Start: From the Search bar
on your taskbar, enter the name of the app that you wish
to pin to your taskbar. Select More > Pin to taskbar

already, find the icon button of the app on the taskbar,
press the button and hold it, and swipe up until you see
the App list appears. If you are using a mouse, find the
icon button of the app on the taskbar, right-click on the
button, and then choose Pin to taskbar . Simply
follow the procedure if you want to unpin the app and
choose Unpin from taskbar .

How to change the taskbar settings

You can customize the taskbar from your taskbar itself. To change
several aspects of your taskbar all at one time, you can use the
Taskbar settings . To access the Taskbar settings, press and hold
or right-click on any empty space on the taskbar, scroll down and
then choose Taskbar settings .
Note: You cannot use the Taskbar settings if you have not activated
your copy of Windows, as not all the settings will be available.

To change the color of the Taskbar, click the Start menu,

select Settings , tap Personalization , choose Colors and
click Show accent color on the following surfaces . Click
on Start, taskbar, and action center . Doing these, settings will
change the taskbar’s color to the same color of your overall theme.
How to lock and unlock the taskbar
When you want the Taskbar to remain the settings you set for it, then
you should lock it. You can decide to unlock the taskbar later when
you wish to switch its location on the desktop or you just want to
make some changes. To get started, simply press and hold or right-
click on any empty space on your taskbar, scroll down, click Taskbar
settings , and enable (toggle ON) Lock the taskbar .
If you see a checkmark next to Lock the taskbar, then you know the
taskbar has already been locked. To disable it, click Lock the
taskbar or navigate to Taskbar settings and disable (toggle it
OFF) it.
In case you have several monitors that display the taskbar, you will
see Lock all taskbars .

How to change the location of the Taskbar

Typically, your taskbar is located at the bottom end of the desktop,
but it can be moved to either side or to the top of the desktop. When
your taskbar is unlocked, its location can be changed (locking and
unlocking taskbar has already been discussed). Once you have
verified that your taskbar has been unlocked, simply press and hold
or right-click on any empty space on your taskbar. Click on Taskbar
settings , tap Taskbar location on screen , and then
choose Left, Right, Top, or Bottom .

icon in your taskbar.

Note: You might have to click on the Up arrow of the “show hidden
icons” on your taskbar before you select the battery icon. The battery
icon shows the percentage of your battery during and after charge
time.

How to rearrange taskbar button

If you wish to edit how the taskbar buttons are group together, press
and hold or right-click on any empty space on your taskbar, click on
Taskbar settings, tap Combine taskbar buttons and then select
from the below list:
- Always, hide labels . This setting is the default taskbar
setting. Each app will appear as one, unlabeled button, even
when multiple windows of a particular app are opened.
- When taskbar is full . With this setting, each window will be
shown as an individual, labeled button. When your taskbar
becomes too crowded, the apps with multiple open windows
will collapse into one app button. Click on the button to view a
list of all the opened windows.
- Never . With this setting, each window will be shown as an
individual; buttons are labeled and not combined, no matter
how many of your windows are opened. As you open more
windows and apps, the button will get smaller, and will
eventually scroll.
If you are using multiple displays, a different choice can be made for
the extra display. Click on Taskbar settings , tap Multiple
Displays, select Combine taskbar buttons on other taskbars
. For these displays, choose from hide label, Always, Never and
When taskbar is full.
How to show badges on taskbar buttons
A badge on any taskbar button is just an alert letting you know that
there are some activities going on or some activities that need to
happen within that particular app.
For instance, a bell badge on the Alarms & Clocks app wakes you to
an active alarm that will notify you at the time you set. This feature is
usually activated by default, but if you decide to check whether it is
on (or you just want to turn it off), press and hold or right-click on any
empty space on your taskbar, click Taskbar settings , and navigate
to Show badges on taskbar buttons .

CHAPTER FOUR
NETWORK AND INTERNET IN
WINDOWS 10
Using and connecting to a Wi-Fi network on
Windows10
Whether you are in your home, work or inside a mall or eatery, there
is a high probability that you will see a Wi-Fi network that you can
connect to for your internet access.

1. Click on the Network icon from your taskbar. The icon that
you will see here actually depends on the current connection
state of your computer. If you are unable to see one of the
network symbols or even a similar one in the image below,
click on the Up arrow to see if it will be available there.

2. Select the Wi-Fi network that you want, and then

tap Connect .
3. Enter the password for the network, and click Next. If you
don’t know the password, simply ask the network admin of
the place where you want to use the network.
4. Click Yes or No , depending on the network type that you
want to connect and whether you want your computer to be
discoverable by other devices (smartphones) and computers
on the network.

Fixing your Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows10

If you are unable to get email, stream songs online, or browse the
web, it is possible that you are not connected to your computer
network and cannot access the internet. To resolve this issue, here
are some troubleshooting techniques you can try;
But before anything at all, you can try the following first to see if they
can fix the connection issue;
- Ensure that your Wi-Fi is actually turned on. Click the "No
internet connection" icon located at the right edge of your
taskbar, and make sure that the Wi-Fi is turned on. If the Wi-Fi
is not turned on, click on it to turn it on. Also, endeavor to
disable Airplane mode.
- From there, check if you can see a Wi-Fi network that you
recognize and trust in the list of available networks. If it
appears, click on the Wi-Fi network, and try to connect to the
network. If the system says Connected underneath the name
of the network, click on Disconnect , wait a bit, and then tap
Connect again.
- Try to connect to a network on another frequency band. Many
consumer Wi-Fi routers actually broadcast at two different
network frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. You will see
these frequency bands as separate networks in the list of Wi-Fi
networks that are available. If the list of available Wi-Fi
networks has both a 5 GHz network and a 2.4 GHz network, try
connecting to the other network.
- Ensure that the physical Wi-Fi switch on your PC is turned on
(you will see an indicator light telling you that it is ON.)
- Run a Network troubleshooter. The Network troubleshooter
can usually help diagnose and fix some common connection
issues.
To run the Network troubleshooter

1. Click on the Start button, select Settings , tap Network

& Internet and choose Status .
2. Under the Change your network settings , click on Network
troubleshooter .
3. Follow all the steps in the troubleshooter, and check if that
actually fixes the network problem.

Restart your wireless router and modem. This will help to create a
new internet connection to your internet service provider (ISP).
When you restart your wireless router and modem, everyone that is
connected to your network will be disconnected temporarily. The
steps you can use to restart your router and modem can actually
vary, but you can find the general steps below. (Note : If you are in
possession of a Wi-Fi router/cable modem combo device, you will
only have to use the steps for the single device.)
a. Unplug the router’s power cable from the power source.
b. Unplug the modem’s power cable from the power source.
Some modems actually have a backup battery. If you unplug
your modem and the lights stay on, simply remove your
battery from the modem.
c. Wait for about 30 seconds or thereabout. Put the modem
back in if you had previously removed the battery.
d. Plug back your modem into the power source. The lights on
your modem will blink. Wait a little bit for the lights to stop
blinking.
e. Plug the router back into the power source. Wait for a few
minutes for the router and modem to power on fully. You can
usually know when they are ready by looking at the status
lights on the two devices.
f. On your PC, try to connect again.
Network troubleshooting on your computer
Check if your network adapter is compatible with the latest
Windows Update
If your network connection gets lost just after updating or upgrading
your Windows, there is a probability that the current driver for the
network adapter was actually designed for a previous edition of
Windows. To check, try to uninstall the new Windows update
temporarily;
1. Click on the Start button, then choose Settings, tap
Update & Security, click on Windows Update, tap View
update history and click on Uninstall updates .
2. Choose the most recent update, and then click Uninstall .

If your network connection is restored by uninstalling the most recent

update, check to confirm whether an updated driver is available.
1. In the search bar on your taskbar, enter Device Manager ,
and then choose Device Manager from the displayed result.
2. Expand the Network adapters , and find the network adapter
for your computer.
3. Click on the network adapter, choose Update driver ,select
Search automatically for updated driver software , and
then proceed with the instructions on the screen.
4. Once the updated driver has been installed successfully, click
on the Start button, select Power and click Restart if
you are prompted to restart. See if this resolves the issue.

If Windows is unable to find a new driver for your network adapter,

go to the website of the manufacturer of your PC to get the updated
network adapter driver. For this, you must know the manufacturer of
the PC and the model name.
Carry out any of the action below;
▪ If you are unable to download and install a newer network
adapter driver, you can hide the update that is making you lose
network connection.
▪ If you could be able to install updated drivers for your network
adapter successfully, then go ahead and reinstall the latest
updates. For this, click on the Start , click Setting , select
Update & Security , tap Windows Update and click on
Check for updates.
Setting up Wireless network for Windows 10
Using wireless networks in your home allows you access to the
internet from more locations in your house. See below for how to
properly set up wireless network;

Get the right equipment

Consider having the following basic equipment before you set up
wireless network;
Broadband Internet connection and modem . A broadband
Internet connection is used to mean a high-speed Internet
connection. Cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) are two of the
most common broadband connections. To get a broadband
connection, contact your internet service provider (ISP). Typically,
Internet Service Providers that provide Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
are telephone companies and internet service providers that provide
cable are cable TV companies. ISPs frequently offer broadband
modems. Some Internet Service Providers equally offer combination
modem/wireless routers. They can as well be found at electronic or
computer stores, and online.
Wireless router .A router can be used to send info between the
internet and your network. With a wireless router, your personal
computers can be connected to your network by using radio signals
rather than using wires. There are various types of wireless network
technologies, which include 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11b, 802.11n, and
802.11ac.
Wireless network adapter . This device can connect your computer
to a wireless network. To connect your portable computer (laptop) or
desktop computer to your wireless network, your computer must
have a wireless network adapter. Most portable laptops, tablets and
some desktop computers actually come with a wireless network
adapter installed already.
To verify whether your computer has a wireless network adapter:
1. Click on the Start button, enter device manager inside the
search box, and then click on Device Manager .
2. Expand Network adapters .
3. Look for any network adapter that might have wireless
inside its name.

Setting up the modem and Internet connection

Once all the equipment is ready, you can then set up your modem
for internet connection. If the modem you have was not set up by
your ISP, use the instruction that accompanied your modem to
connect the modem to your PC and the internet. If you are using a
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), connect the modem to a phone jack. If
you are using cable, connect your modem to a cable jack.

Securing your wireless network

Security is very important when you are doing things online; in fact,
security for your wireless network is even more important because
the signal for your network could be broadcast outside of your home.
In addition, if you do not secure your network, people can have
access to your connection and start using it without your consent.
To enhance your network’s security, consider the following tips;
Change the default username and password. This will help to
further enhance your router’s security. Most router manufacturers
usually have a default username and password on the router and a
default network name (also known as the SSID). Any other person
could have access to this information without your knowledge. To
avoid instances like that, the default username and pass-word
should be changed for the router.
Set up a security key (password) for your network . If you don’t
have a security key (password) for your network, your wireless
network might be accessible to anyone, and this can lead to
unauthorized access. It is advised that you use Wi-Fi Protected
Access 2 (WPA2) security if your router supports it. Consult your
router’s documentation for comprehensive information and to know
the type of security it can support.
Some routers actually support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). If your
own router supports WPS and the router is connected to the
network, use the steps below to set up your network security key;
- In Windows 10, click Start , then tap Settings > click on
Network & Internet , tap Status and click on Network and
Sharing Center .
- Choose Set up a new connection or network .
- Click on Set up a new network , and then tap Next .
The wizard will usually walk you through how you can create your
network name and security key. In addition, if your router actually
supports it, the wizard will default to Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA or
WPA2) security. It is advisable to use WPA2, because it gives better
security than the WPA or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security.
With the WPA2 or WPA, you can as well use a passphrase, so you
won’t have to remember a cryptic sequence of numbers and letters.
Use a firewall . A firewall is a software or hardware that can help to
protect your computer from malwares (malicious software)
or unauthorized users. Having a firewall on each PC on your network
will help to control attacks from malicious software on your
network, and will also help to protect your personal computer when
you are surfing the Internet. Windows 10 has a firewall included in it.

Connect a PC to your wireless network

1. Click on the Network or icon. You will find these icons
in the notification area.
2. From your list of networks, select the network that you wish to
connect to, and then click Connect .
3. Enter the security key (usually called the password).
4. If there are some additional instructions, kindly follow them.

How to find the password of your network

While it is possible that you forget the password for your Wi-Fi
network, you will still be able to find the password if there is another
Windows computer that is connected to your Wi-Fi network. Once
you find the password, it can be used on another device or computer
to connect to your Wi-Fi network again.

1. On a Windows computer that is connected to your Wi-Fi

network, carry out any of the action below
▪ On your Windows 10 computer, click on the Start button, then
tap Settings, select Network & Internet, click on Status and
choose Network and Sharing Center.

choose the name of your Wi-Fi network.
3. In the Wi-Fi Status, click on Wireless Properties.
4. In the Wireless Network Properties, choose the Security tab,
and then tap on the Show characters check box

The password for your Wi-Fi network will be shown in the security
box of the network.
On another Windows computer or device, connect to you just as you
used to do, and input the password when requested.
Finding your IP address
For Wi-Fi connection
1. On your taskbar, choose Wi-Fi network, select the Wi-Fi
network that you are connected to and click Properties .
2. Under Properties, check for your IP address and you will
see it listed just next to IPv4 address.
For Ethernet connection

1. On your taskbar, choose the Ethernet network icon > the

Ethernet network connection.

2. Under Ethernet, choose the Ethernet network connection.
3.
Under Properties, check for your IP address and you
will see it listed just next to IPv4 address.

Windows 10 has been much better compared to what was
obtainable in the earliest versions of Windows. To check what the
File Explorer has got to offer you in Windows 10, simply click on the
icon of the File Explorer from the taskbar or the Start menu, or you
can alternatively click on the Windows logo key + E on your
keyboard.

Here are the few things that have changed in Windows 10;
▪ You can now see OneDrive as part of the File Explorer.
▪ When you open File Explorer, you will see Quick access. The
folder you frequent quite often and your recently used files will be
listed under Quick access, so the trouble of digging through a
series of files and folder to find them is not there again. You can
also pin your favorite folders and files to the Quick access for
easy and fast reference.
▪ In addition, you can now use apps to share your photos and files
right from the File Explorer. Choose the files that you wish to
share, scroll to the Share tab, click on the Share button, and
then select an app.
If you have been using Windows 7 before switching to Windows 10,
here are few more differences you will notice;
▪ My Computer is now referred to as This PC, and you won’t see it
by default on your desktop. You will need to add This PC to the
Start menu or to your desktop by opening the File Explorer, click
on This PC from the left pane, and then drag it to your desktop.
Also, If you want This PC to appear in your Start menu, launch
File Explorer, right-click (or press and hold) This PC in the left

Pin, remove and customize in the Quick access
By default, the File Explorer in Windows 10 will open to Quick
Access. A folder or file can be set to appear in Quick access so that
the file can be easy to find and open. Just right click on the file and
choose Pin to Quick access. The file or folder can be unpin later
when you do not need it anymore in the Quick access.

If you wish to see only the folders or files that you have pinned, you
can disable recent files or frequent folders. Scroll to the View tab,
and then choose Options. In the Privacy section, uncheck the
checkboxes and choose Apply. Now the Quick access will only
display your pinned folders. (If you turn on the Quick access again,
the files and folders that you have previously removed from the
Quick access might appear.

Items can also be removed from the Quick access. If any item shows
up, and you don’t want to see that particular item again, just right-
click on the item or file and choose Remove from Quick access.
The files won’t show up in the Quick access again even when you
use them every day.

change the location of the folder by clicking on Change location.
In fact, if you are planning to change the OneDrive folder location,
this is the best time to do that.
▪ On the All your files, ready and on-demand screen, you can
see how your files are actually marked to display them as locally
available, online only, or always available. The Files On-Demand
will help you to access all your files in OneDrive without
necessarily having the need to download all of the files and use
the storage space on your computer. Tap Next .
Access and manage files on your OneDrive
Now everything is ready. You will see your OneDrive files in File
Explorer under OneDrive folder. If you have two or more accounts,
your personal files will be available under OneDrive – Personal and
the school files or work files will be accessible under OneDrive -
CompanyName .

You can now see a new blue or white cloud icon (or even both) in the
notification area on your computer and your files will be synced to
your PC. You will see the blue cloud icon as OneDrive –
[YourTenantName] when you hover your cursor over the icon.
Whenever you want to change the folder that has been synchronized
on your PC, just right-click on the cloud icon in your taskbar
notification section and click Settings, select Account and tap
Choose folders .

How to back up your documents, pictures and folders

in OneDrive
Setting up folder backup for your laptop

1. If you are asked to back up your important folders (Desktop,

Documents, and Pictures), click on the prompt to initiate the
folder backup wizard.
If you cannot see the prompt or you have closed the wizard already,
click on the blue or white cloud icon from the Windows notification
area, and then select Help & Settings > Settings ,
then Backup > Manage backup .
2. From the dialog of the Back up your folders , ensure that
the folders you want to back up are selected.

3. Click on Start backup .

4. You can just terminate the dialog box while you let the files to
synchronize to OneDrive. Or, to watch while your files are
getting sync, click View upload progress . If the dialog has
already been closed, and you would like to open the
OneDrive activity center, choose the blue or white cloud from
the notification area.
Change settings for PC folder backup
If you plan to stop or begin backing up your important folder in
OneDrive, the folder selections in the OneDrive settings can be
updated.
Note: If you stop backing up any folder, the files from that particular
folder that have already been backed up by OneDrive will stay in
OneDrive. The files can be moved to a local folder on your computer
if you don’t want the files in OneDrive again. If you later add a new
file to that particular folder, the file will not be backed up by
OneDrive.

1. Launch the OneDrive Settings (click the blue or white blue

cloud icon from the notification area, and then tap Help &
Settings > Settings .)

2. In Settings, choose Backup , and click on Manage backup .

3. If you want to discontinue backing up a particular folder,
click Stop backup . To verify that you actually want to stop
backup in the Are you sure you want to stop folder backup
dialog, choose Stop backup .
4. To begin backing up your folder, choose any folder that
doesn't read Files backed up , and then choose Start
backup .
CHAPTER SIX
Enhancing security with the Windows security
Windows10 comes with Windows Security feature, which offers the
updated antivirus protection. Your computer will be duly protected
from the time you begin to use Windows10. Windows Security is

Manually run a malware scan

When you are worried about risks to a particular folder or file, just
right-click on the folder or file in File Explorer, and then click on Scan
with Microsoft Defender .
If you feel that your computer has been attacked by a malware or
virus, then you should endeavor to run a quick scan immediately.
This is actually much faster than running a full scan on all the folders
and files on your computer.

Using the Quick Scan feature for Windows security

1. Click Start , select Settings , tap Update & Security
, click on Windows Security , and select Virus &
threat protection .
2. Under Current threats , click on Quick scan (or choose
Scan now under Threat history in the previous editions of
Windows 10).

If you run the scan and you don’t seem to find anything wrong with
your computer, but you are still worried, then you can carry out some
other advanced scan.

Perform advanced scan for Windows security

- Click Start , select Settings , tap Update & Security
, click on Windows Security , and select Virus & threat
protection .
- Under Current threats , click on Scan options (or if you are
using the previous edition of Windows 10, just click on Run a
new advanced scan under Threat history ).
- Choose any of the scan options below;

Full scan (check programs and files that are

currently running on your computer)
Custom scan (this is to scan specific folders and
files)
Microsoft Defender Offline scan (this scan should
be activated if your computer, or could potentially be,
infected by a malware or virus).

Click on Scan now .
