Mission Statement
Our mission is to design an automatic telephone answering machine or system , an
electronic device that answers automatically to an incoming telephone call and plays a
pre-recorded message and is capable of recording a message the caller want to leave.

Abstract
II
An automatic telephone answering machine or system is an electronic device that
answers automatically to an incoming telephone call and plays a pre-recorded message
and is capable of recording a message the caller want to leave.
These systems include message recording system having remote access to message playback,
automatic dialling, equipment to receive an alarm, automatic data entry-answering systems
and other common telephone devices being used along with modem equipment’s. The
microcontroller typically controls a number of peripherals, components of the answering
machine such as an LCD or LED display, an indicator light for recording and playback
options.

A telephone answering machine must be capable of being remotely activated consisting of:
 A switch deciding the mode of operation either automatic or normal mode.
 Provision for receiving the calls automatically when in automatic mode.
 Provision for recording the message to be delivered to the incoming user and also to
record his message
 Storage for the message
 Microcontroller to deliver control signal as per the mode of operation Commonly
used telephone answering devices comprises of a number of features which
allow a user to examine the presence of a call, seize calls, play back recorded
voice messages, record an announcement etc.

Triggering of a telephone answering machine done by counting the incoming ring signals
and when the count surpass a pre-set number set by the user. The machine is
programmed in such a way that if the user does not attain his telephone within a specified
time period which is the function of number of ring signals, the call is automatically
answered and a message is play back to the caller as well as asks him to leave a message.

Introduction

With the development of new technologies different additional features are being added to
the basic telephone. These functions include a wide range of new application which allows
automation also. Starting from shortening of dialling time to answer a call automatically are
some of the recent features developed. In the world of personal telecommunication this
automatic answering machine has become very popular and worldwide. It is becoming the
part of every house hold for communication basically to receive message in the
absence of the user of the machine.

Definition:

An automatic telephone answering machine can be identified as an electronic device

which has the basic feature of answering a call in the absence of the receiving user. It has
some added features like plying back a pre-recorded audio message to the caller. If
the caller wants to leave a voice message he can do so by accepting the option to
record a message. The answering machine or system can be described as data processing
system. It can be connected to multiple telephone lines. There might be also additional
features like connect to another predefined number and forward the recorded message to the
present location of receiving end user.

Background:

Telegraph one, the first realistic telephonic setup for magnetic sound recording and
reproduction, was patented in 1898 by Valdemar Poulsen, a Danish telephone engineer.
It was used to record the telephonic conversations. Magnetizing a wire with different field
strength was the principle.

We can use this magnetized wire to play back the sound.

First Automatic Answering Machine is invented by Mr. Willy Müller in 1935. This machine
was a three-foot-tall machine trendy with Orthodox Jews and they were not allowed to
answer the phone on the rest days.

In 1960, the Ansafone, was invented by Dr. Kazuo Hashimoto. It is the first answering
machine to be sold in USA.The modern telephone answering device we are familiar with was
first introduced by CASIO communications. These are the first commercially viable
answering machines.

1
In 1971, Phone Mate brought up with one of the first commercially feasible
answering machines. The Model-400 weighs around 10 pounds, able to screen calls and can
hold 20 messages on a reel-to-reel tape. There is also provision for private message retrieval
by using an earphone .

Dr. Kazuo Hashimoto of Japan invented the first Digital telephone answering machine in
mid-1983. The first ever voice mail system was invented by Gordon Matthews.

Problem statement
The telephone communication system that are using in our homes and office has its own
drawback.

some of the drawback of not using automatic telephone answering machine are:-

• A person /customer who don’t use a service of automatic telephone answering

machine ,he/she may not get the recorded message.

• The receiver will lose his/her energy, money and time just because of not getting the
information just in time.so the purpose of using automatic telephone answering machine
helps to save losing time ,energy and money

Literature Review
Telephone answering machine Designed by: Abdullah M. A. Zyarah this is the 21st
century version of a common household or small office appliance: the Telephone Answering
Machine. It solves most of the problems in the rent to its 20th century predecessor: confusing
user interface, poor voice quality, limited storage capacity and lack of worldwide
connectivity. All these limitations are addressed by TAM which features outstanding voice
quality and an almost limited storage capacity thanks to the use of an external flash memory
card. The user interface is and consists of a plain text file, which can be edited on a Personal
Computer and replaced at will.

This simple configuration process creates up to 4 virtual answering machines that shield
each user from unwanted.

AT90LS8535 digital answering machine Microcontroller Design Spring 1999 Brian
Glassmeyer and Eric Melin this designing something cool using the AT90LS85835 8-bit
microcontroller for an answering machine was interesting because it involved interfacing
many analog parts, and analog circuitry not digital. This answering machine is designed to:
The answering machine can record up to 21.8 second message to thirty two .68 second
messages.  This leaves an incredible amount of flexibility for an answering machine where
message lengths vary unpredictably. Multiple messages are recorded one after another.
Using the play button will begin with the first message and play until the end of the last
message.  The delete button will erase all of the messages at once (just like a cassette tape
answering machine).

Automatic Telephone Answering Machine without microcontroller by jangidusushil ,

oct16, 2007 here is a circuit of a simple telephone answering unit which used with any
telephone.

The circuit consists of three main sections:

1. Ring detector section.
2. A timer controlled electronic switch and telephone line interface.
3. A voice IC having a specific pre-recorded message.

This is not very critical and any other device (such as tape player with message recorded
on an endless tape) which does not overload the circuit or the telephone line used. The
incoming line is protected by metal-oxide varistor is used as electronic switch/telephone line
interface. Ring detector section comprises capacitor, resistor and opt coupler, configured as
mono stable flip-flop, rectifier diodes and filter, capacitor. It’s a simple voice recorder which
can record up to 60 second.

Goals of the project

To design a typical telephone answering machine that is a separate device connected to a
telephone line. This type of answering machines usually include circuitry for the detection
of a ringing signal on the telephone line signifying the existence of an incoming call.
It answers the call by taking the line off-hook, plays an outgoing message, records an
incoming message if any, and hangs up the line in order to respond to subsequent telephone
calls.

3
Objectives of the project
General objective

To design the telephone answering machine by using different kinds of electronic device.
It is used to identify as an electronic device which has the basic feature of answering a call
in the absence of the receiving user. It can be connected to multiple telephone lines. It can
record the voice from telephone line and mobile phone.

Specific objective

 To receive message in the absence of the user.

 Plying back a pre-recorded audio message to the caller.
 It holds more than one port to connect multiple telephone line.
 Storage for the message
 work to also mobile phone

Scope and Limitation of the project

Scope

we can use this telephone answering machine the place telephone line and mobile
phone are available .In any place the network connection is available we can use this
answering machine connecting by wire, and also the physical structure is flat so we
can put this machine easily.

Limitation

Some limitation of telephone answering machine

 It uses only telephone network is available
 It will work only some phones
 This telephone answering machine record the message or receive voice
message through cable so this fixed line is failed it cannot record.

Methodology of the project
An automatic telephone answering machine or system is electronic devices that answers
automatically to an incoming telephone call and plays a pre-recorded message and is capable
of recording a message the caller want to leave and Store the message. Commonly used
telephone answering devices comprises of a number of features which allow a user to
examine the presence of a call, seize calls, play back recorded voice messages, record an
announcement.

It is becoming the part of every house hold for communication basically to receive
message in the absence of the user of the machine. Also these require less physical space
with better noise immunity and audio quality. The flexibility of quick access to the specific
message when a multiple messages are being received is there in digital machines. In digital
answering machines, fixed data compression rate is being followed for speech recording.

This telephone answering machine simulation design include components like:-

 Condenser Mike
