SSE19: GEOGRAPHY 3 (URBAN GOEGRAPHY)

ENGAGE
If I could live in any city of the world I’d rather choose rural area where few homes or other
buildings and not having many people as long as me, my family and my relatives are not far
were just in one or same village. Living in a rural area provides another layer of privacy simply
because there are less people around. I know that sounds obvious but, when you don’t have to
worry about nosy neighbours gossiping about you. It can be a safer lifestyle. Yes, there is crime
in rural areas, as well, but the more people that you can take out of the equation the less
chance that you’ll have to worry about it. Well, if you have ever wanted to own something
other than a dog, cat, bird, or snake, living the “country life” affords you having whatever you
want, be it horses, chickens, goats, or even llamas. Most Homeowner’s Associations for city and
suburban neighbourhoods have provisions that disallow owners from having “farm animals”.
This is usually not the case in rural areas. Cleaner air, I don’t believe that anyone has ever
complained about having cleaner air, and most people would probably agree that country air is
cleaner than city air. You can have a large garden. City dwellers who have a green thumb often
grow herbs or may have a tomato plant or two; however, with more land you can grow as much
of your own food as you’d like. You can be as self-sufficient as you want to be. Whether it’s
growing your own vegetables, raising your own beef, producing water from a well, or even
using solar panels, living in a rural area allows you to rely on yourself as much as you would like.
You could even go off the grid altogether.
LEARNING CHECK:
HOW DO SITE OR SITUATION SETTLEMENT OF PEOPLE IN THE CITY?
The location and growth of an settlement depended upon its site and situation. The site was the
actual place where people decided to locate their settlement. The growth of
that settlement then depended upon its situation in relation to accessibility and availability of
natural resources.
KNOWLEDGE BUILDING
Assessment task 1. Comprehension check
1. In your own word, define urban geography.
Urban geography can help us understand urbanization trends and their expression
in urban spatial structure and to relate these to our own lives and concerns. In
fact, urban geography is arguably one of the most important sub disciplines
within geography, and especially within human geography.
2. What is the relevance of studying urban geography?
Human geography is a wide-ranging discipline that draws together many of the
strands important for understanding the world today. It examines human societies and
how they develop, their culture, economy and politics, all within the context of their
environment. The study of urban geography can help us have a better understanding of
the economics of what goes on within cities and recognize the small things that are
involved in local, national, and international scales. It helps us understand everything
that is occurring around us inside city limits and outside as well.
CRITICAL THINKING
Assessment task 2. MATRIX ANALYSIS
ROLE OF URBAN GEOGRAPHY
ECONOMIC Tends to focus on issues such as: How macro-
economic forces play out locally,
the importance of integrated land
use, urban infrastructure and transportation,
housing policy, urban problems such as
congestion, and local government's important
contribution to economic development.
POLITICAL Politics plays an important role in explaining
the path and direction a city chooses.
A city's economic development functions and
for the political decision to mobilize public
capital.
SOCIAL Urban social geography is a sub-field within
human geography, looking at the factors
within an urban environment that affect
human relationships on social, economic and
political levels.
LOCATION/SPACE Since cities provide goods and services to a
population base, the level of accessibility to
this base is a location factor. Central places
theory focuses on this aspect in explaining the
distribution of cities, including their sizes, over
a region.
CREATING
Assessment task 3. Photo journaling
Seoul, South Korea - 1900 and Now
1900 was quite a long time ago, so this
example is not that surprising. Better show
the world how the famous Gangnam district
looked in the 1960's. The second half of the
20th century was a drastic speed-up of
Korean modernisation and economy.
Cebu City’s Malacañang sa Sugbo transformed into a beautiful museum
The National Museum of the
Philippines will lead the
transformation of the
Malacañang sa Sugbo building
in Cebu City into a museum.
The proposal to set up a
national museum in Cebu
coincides with preparations for
the Philippines’ quincentennial
commemoration of Ferdinand
Magellan’s arrival in the
Philippines and marking the
achievement of
circumnavigating the world.
The 2021 celebration also
marks the introduction of
Christianity in the Philippines
and the 500th anniversary of
Lapu-Lapu’s victory in Mactan.
