First Semester, Academic Year 2016-2017

VI. Course Description : This course will explore on the influence of communication in a development context and

the various approaches to media’s role in society’s progress.

VII. Course Outcomes :

At the end of the semester, the students should be able to:

A. Cognitive (Scientia)
1. express the role of media in community development;
2. evaluate the relevance, potential and use of various media as tools of development;
3. recognize the essence of media content in relation to its influence to social development;
4. Trace the historical background of development communication in the Philippines; and,
5. discuss the concept of development communication both in the local and global context.

B. Affective (Virtus)
1. establish the necessity of positive portrayals in media;
2. exhibit patience and diligence in the conceptualization of a community development project;
3. recognize the significance of the various forms of media in community development;
4. translate proposals into concrete outputs that will advance the cause of the people in the chosen area of project; and,
5. show the different process, functions and techniques of developmental journalism with reference to print, electronic
and other modem media.

C. Psychomotor (Communitas)
1. conduct independent research and analysis on specific development community projects;
2. identify the various factors and actors in development communication;
3. sketch a map or design a calendar of activities as a guide for the project execution;
4. perform an equal distribution of task for the realization of the designed plan; and,
5. demonstrate the ability to execute a development community project using different media genre.
