109 - IOT and E Glove Based Nurse Calling System

This document describes an IOT-based gesture-based nurse calling system that allows patients to call for a nurse using hand movements detected by an accelerometer sensor. The system includes a microcontroller, accelerometer, LCD display, and GPRS module. Gesture movements are translated into commands that are sent via GPRS to notify nurses. Patient information is displayed on a web page and android app connected to an Amazon server. The system aims to help reduce nurse workload by allowing remote patient monitoring and communication of needs through gestures.

IOT based Gesture based nurse calling system

Abstract
The project mainly aims in designing a system which is capable of helping patients to call
nurse/attendants in case of emergencies through hand movement. The system comprised of a
accelerometer sensor coupled with Renesas 30-pin and worked synchronously with patient hand
movement. The concurrent activation of the sensors enables the conveyance of patient need to
the nurse station through a GPRS wireless communication and we can see the details of the
patient through an android app.

Introduction
There is a acute shortage of nursing staff across the globe. The condition is worse is
developed and under developed countries. As per nursing council of India (NCI), only 40% of
registered nursing staffs are actively working. This has result in the decrease in patient to nurse
ratio. The suggested ratios are 1:1, 1:3 and 1:6 in the critical care unit, intermediate care unit and
general ward respectively. Since the duty of the nursing staff occur in 3 shifts, the shortage of
nursing staff looks grimmer. As per the recent report in many public hospital the nurse patient
ratio hovers around 1:60 during evening and night shifts. This puts a stress on the on duty nurses.
the stress and work pressure have been reported to be major deterrent for the nurses to join
nursing staff the afore mentioned factors hamper the patient care to great extent. keeping this in
mind this project has been developed a low cost nurse calling system which can help reducing
the work pressure for nurses.

In this project the system consist of single microcontroller, accelerometer and GPRS .the
prototype module can be wearable device. The patient need help in case of emergencies send
request to nurse through gesture (hand) movements, the gesture movement coveys what kind of
help is required, for each movement corresponding commands are generated and sent to nurse
control unit through GPRS. And for every command buzzer is provide to alert attendant/nurse
near to the patient.

Description

Many embedded systems have substantially different designs according to their functions
and utilities. In this project design, structured modular design concept is adopted and the system
is mainly composed of a single microcontroller, LCD, Accelerometer, and GPRS.
The microcontroller located at the centre of the block diagram forms the control unit of
the entire project. Embedded within the microcontroller is a program that helps the
microcontroller to take action based on the inputs provided by the output of the sensors.
And for every command buzzer is provide to alert attendant/nurse
near to the patient
The patient need help in case of emergencies send request to nurse through gesture
(hand) movements and the details are displayed on web page and also on android app which is
connected to the Amazon server. And then admin can monitor the patient. Once the problem is
solved then acknowledgement is sent to the app.
In an Amazon server the data stored in data base with patient problem then from server to
an android app as patient name ,bed number and the problem is sent so the application will be
with the nurse. Therefore the nurse can monitor the respective patient immediately.

Demo points:

 A prototype module will be developed for the project. It includes individual PCB boards
for all interfaces according to the block diagram. Every PCB will be inter-connected with
jumper wires.

 LCD is utilized to demonstrate the whole project.

 Accelerometer is used generate gesture commands.

 GPRS is used for wireless communication between patient and nurse.

Features

 Generating commands based on gesture movements via accelerometer.

 Sending information through GPRS to nurse for generated gesture movements.
 The details of the patients is displayed on the app
 The GPRS is connected to Amazon server
 The same information is displayed on the web page
 Accelerometer is used for hand gesture

Literature Review:
Survey On Gesture Controlled System:
We have analyzed the studies and commercial products in table1 and table-2. Each entry is
summarized in different columns of the table and ordered by year of research and launch. How
the system is applicable in daily life is briefly mentioned in the application field of the tables. We
have classified the users of any (when disable or elderly is mentioned in general, no age range),
disable, elderly, general (when disable or elderly is not mentioned) and gesture type of hand,
head, finger, body or any parts. Gesture controlled system is a combination of different tools of
technologies like camera, graphics, vision etc. Technology field briefly mentioned about the
tools or technology used in the system. Interfacing field provides the information where gesture
commands take place. It also sometimes describes the feedback of the gesture. We also included
the task (s) required to find the result in the experimental method column which is kind of brief
functionality of commercial products. Researchers addressed different issues in their researcher
which provided a good background for further research. These are mentioned in the issues
addressed. We have also studied the commercial technology products currently available in the
market using the gesture commands. The number of products is indicating that we have enough
resource available to develop gesture based interface. There is an opens source application
available to develop DIY gesture controlled system of any computer application.

Future scope
For project demo concern, we have developed a prototype module. In future, this project
can be taken to the product level. To make this project as user friendly and durable, we need to
make it compact and cost effective. Going further, most of the units can be embedded along with
the controller on a single board with change in technology, thereby reducing the size of the
system.

Conclusion

The project is designed using structured modeling and is able to provide the desired
results. It can be successfully implemented as a Real Time system with certain modifications.
Science is discovering or creating major breakthrough in various fields, and hence technology
keeps changing from time to time. Going further, most of the units can be fabricated on a single
along with microcontroller thus making the system compact thereby making the existing system
more effective. To make the system applicable for real time purposes components with greater
range needs to be implemented.
